Will This Summer Break Records in Phoenix AZ

While the East and South are freezing here in the Phoenix Metro Area we continue to be above average by ten degrees Fahrenheit or so. While that means we are seeing midafternoon highs in the low to mid-eighties, what does that mean for this coming summer?

The National Weather Service claims that a very warm spring doesn’t mean anything in relation to our coming summer temperatures.  For one, I would sure hate to see a summer that had many days that were ten degrees above normal.  We will have to wait and see if this summer is the one that breaks our record high of one hundred-twenty-two degrees that happened on June 26th in the summer of 1991.

I know that seems as hot as it could get, but, we have to remember that it is twelve degrees below the record high in the continental United States. The all-time high nationwide is 134 degrees, set on July 10, 1913 in Death Valley, California.

I would hate to think about temperatures in the Valley of the Sun pushing above the record this summer, but, it could happen.  Is your AC going to be ready for that type of summer? A spring time tune-up could go a long way toward protecting your family from the heat this coming 2014 summer. When was the last time you had you had your air conditioner professionally serviced?

Did You Know?

Weather temperatures have been officially kept in Phoenix, Arizona since 1895.

Only three times in its history since 1895 has Phoenix experienced temperatures at or above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition to the record 122 degree day, it was also 121 degrees on July 28, 1995, and 120 degrees on Jun 25, 1990.

The all-time record hottest temperature ever recorded in the state of Arizona is 128 degrees Fahrenheit, which occurred on June 29th, 1994, in the city of Lake Havasu. Lake Havasu is located in west-central Arizona, about a 200 mile drive west of Phoenix. Lake Havasu is located along the border with California and is known as the transplanted home of the London Bridge.

If the U.S. used the Celsius system of temperature measurement, our record high in Phoenix would be just fifty (50) degrees, wow that sounds cooler to me!

On February 16th, 2014 Phoenix broke the record high for the day with a temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit.  That would make a very warm summer day in Minnesota.

So rather than worrying about saving our springtime plants we are sipping Iced Tea on the patio.
