Cool Arizona Places: Japanese Friendship Garden

Looking for a very local Cool Place for this weekend?  You may want to consider the Japanese Friendship Garden.

If you're looking for a very relaxed and beautiful experience, look no further than the Japanese Friendship Garden. The 3½ acre park is a symbol of friendship between Phoenix and her sister city Himeji in Japan, and took 50 architects from Japan more than 60 trips to Phoenix to build since 1987.

Here, you won't find Sakura, the popular Japanese cherry blossom trees, but you will spot purple leaf plums, Japanese maples, and evergreen pears that provide plenty of shady spots to take a Zen
moment. This relaxing park is considered to be a traditional Japanese, strolling garden.

Come tour the peace and beauty of Ro Ho En! With serene landscape views at every turn of the path, your stroll along the wide walkway is a pleasant, rewarding experience.

Self-Guided Tours

To enhance our experience, a self-guide map is available in the gift shop which will explain some of the landscape views and features unique to Japanese garden design. The map is free for visitors. Please recycle the map at the end of your visit if you do not wish to take it home as a souvenir.

A map of all the plants in the garden is also available for purchase at the gift shop.

A Japanese garden is a concentration of natural beauty, instilled within the confines of an enclosed space. It is not a "park" in our western sense, but rather where visitors may quietly reflect and seek harmony with the natural world and within themselves, a tradition that is centuries old. The Garden Etiquette outlines ways you can honor and respect the traditions of the Japanese Garden.

Please stay on the path at all times.
Please do not climb trees, rocks or enter waterfall areas.
To maintain the quiet and serenity of the garden, please refrain from using loud voices and shouting. Running is prohibited.
