Aaron’s Mechanical Services Just Two Days Till Christmas

Will your home be the place where everyone gathers for the Christmas holidays? Are you ready? How full will your house be? Just how many folks are you expecting?

Did you know the National Weather Service now predicting the high temperature on Christmas day will be just sixty-three degrees Fahrenheit. Yes, I know that is very warm when compared to many locations across the country.

On Christmas day Billings, Montana is forecast to be a high of just twenty-eight and snowing. For your friends in Minneapolis / Saint Paul they are expecting around thirty-two degrees Fahrenheit and just a bit cloudy.

Many places are predicting storms that will make holiday travel rather iffy. Even folks flying into the Valley of the Sun may affected by weather on their end or one of the connecting cities.

That does make our sixty-three seem downright warm.  So the Phoenix Metro area is once again a nice warm place to be. But, with Friday night forecast to be near freezing I know I need a nice warm and reliable furnace or heating system. How is yours doing? Are you ready for winter?

You know we passed that magic day on Sunday and it is official we are now in the “Winter” season?

I guess that also means we are just about ninety days from Spring and we will have to be talking about getting ready for Summer.

Did You Know?

Depending on where you live to called a “White Christmas” there must be at least one inch of snow on the ground.

As a cold front continues to move toward South Florida that will drop temperatures for Christmas Day, last minute travelers could hit some rough weather in many of the major northern and midwestern cities. Weather in Palm Beach County has been trending several degrees above normal temperatures recently with several days topping 80 degrees. But those high temperatures will come back Thursday when highs struggle to move above the low 70s, accompanied by clouds and wind, National Weather Service Miami meteorologist David Ross said.

There is even a song titled A Christmas Cold and you can find it on YouTube at: http://youtu.be/2FIRsA8vKQM

Aaron’s Mechanical Services Looks At Christmas Week

Are you ready for Christmas?  No, I’m not talking about shopping.  I’m talking about the temperature dropping into the thirties. Several days will see lows that will drop well below forty degrees Fahrenheit.  I don’t think any nights will hit that magic 32 degrees and we can say freezing.

A furnace or heat pump is going to come in handy, Is yours ready?  Are you sure? What will the cost be to keep your home warm and toasty?

When your children get up early to see what Santa has left will they have to bundle up first or will they wake up to a comfortable warm home? A quick call to Aaron’s Mechanical Services at 623-388-4436 will make sure they are cozy as they open their gifts.

Only you can give them that warm gift.

Did You Know?

The custom of sending Christmas cards was started in the UK in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole. He was a civil servant (Government worker) who was very interested in the new 'Public Post Office' and wondered how it could be used more by ordinary people.

Sir Henry had the idea of Christmas Cards with his friend John Horsley, who was an artist. They designed the first card and sold them for 1 shilling each. (That is only 5p or 8 cents today(!), but in those days it was worth much more.) The card had three panels. The outer two panels showed people caring for the poor and in the center panel was a family having a large Christmas dinner! Some people didn't like the card because it showed a child being given a glass of wine! About 1000 (or it might have been less!) were printed and sold. They are now very rare and cost thousands of Pounds or Dollars to buy now!

The first postal service that ordinary people could use was started in 1840 when the first 'Penny Post' public postal deliveries began. Before that, only very rich people could afford to send anything in the post. The new Post Office was able to offer a Penny stamp because new railways were being built. These could carry much more post than the horse and carriage that had been used before. Also, trains could go a lot faster. Cards became even more popular in the UK when they could be posted in an unsealed envelope for one halfpenny - half the price of an ordinary letter.

As printing methods improved, Christmas cards became much more popular and were produced in large numbers from about 1860. In 1870 the cost of sending a post card, and also Christmas cards, dropped to half a penny. This meant even more people were able to send cards.

An engraved card by the artist William Egley, who illustrated some of Charles Dickens's books, is on display in the British Museum. By the early 1900s, the custom had spread over Europe and had become especially popular in Germany.

Do You Know About the AFUE Heating Rating?

The Efficiency Ratings standards are set by the U.S. Department of Energy under the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act of 1987, which became effective January 1, 1992.

All natural gas heating systems have what's called an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating. The rating is expressed in percentages. The higher the AFUE rating – the more efficient the heating system – and the less energy needed to heat your home.

For example, a new, high-efficiency furnace with a 94% efficiency rating provides 94 cents worth of heat from every energy dollar. By comparison, an older, standard efficiency furnace with an efficiency rating of 60%, provides 60 cents worth of energy for every dollar spent.

Annual Savings: Simple Payback

If you install a residential warm air furnace at 90% AFUE vs. 80% AFUE, the estimated annual savings in energy costs is $115 with a simple payback of approximately 3 years.

High-Efficiency Furnaces

Furnaces with efficiencies over 90% are called condensing furnaces and offer the most energy savings.

These furnaces achieve 90% AFUE rating by sending flue gases through a secondary heat exchanger. This device further extracts heat that is usable energy for your home.

Remaining flue gases then exhaust outdoors through special plastic-type vent pipe inserted through the wall of the home. This "direct-vent" piping configuration also draws in outside air for combustion. Since indoor air is not used in the combustion process, cold air leakage (infiltration) is reduced – an added energy savings.

High-Efficiency Boilers

A boiler can last between 20-30 years, so it is important to choose an efficient model in order to reduce long-term costs. The most efficient boilers forced hot water boilers are considered to have an AFUE rating of 85% or higher. We recommend purchasing steam boilers with an 82% or higher AFUE rating.

Venting Your Heating System

Often times the installation of a high efficiency heating system requires changes to your venting system. It is recommended that you consult with your contractor for proper venting methods.

Cool Arizona Places Walnut Canyon National Monument

Head north this weekend to see Walnut Canyon National Monument. Gaze across the curved canyon walls! Among the remarkable geological cliff formations of the canyon itself, the shapes of the former homes of ancient inhabitants of Walnut Canyon are easily evident.

Or hike along the Rim or Island Trails you can imagine what life was like along and within Walnut Canyon while visiting actual pueblos and walking in the steps of those who came before us.

In 1915 a spur road to what is now Walnut Canyon National Monument was designated part of the National Old Trails Highway, also known as the Ocean-to-Ocean Highway, which stretched for 3,095 miles across the US. Walnut Canyon became a short detour from this major transcontinental route.

A Centennial Kick-Off Celebration for Walnut Canyon National Monument was held on Thursday, December 4, 2014, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, at the Museum of Northern Arizona, in the Branigar Chase Hall, 3101 N. Fort Valley Road, Flagstaff, AZ 86001.

Walnut Canyon National Monument was established by President Woodrow Wilson on November 30, 1915, to preserve ancient cliff dwellings. Initially managed by the US Forest Service, the monument was transferred to the National Park Service in 1934. Today a variety of archeological and natural resources are preserved on approximately 3600 acres.

Understanding of earlier populations comes from multiple perspectives, including the traditional history of the people themselves and interpretations by archeologists of structures and artifacts that remain. You can explore both through the links on this page.

Flagstaff, Arizona, is the world's first designated International Dark Sky City. This helps to ensure dark night skies at 3 national monuments located nearby - Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater Volcano, and Wupatki.

Park entrance road, trails, and Visitor Center are open all year, except December 25.
Hours: November - May 22 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM MST

Walnut Canyon National Monument is located approximately 7.5 miles east of Flagstaff. To reach Walnut Canyon from Flagstaff, travel east on Interstate 40 toward Albuquerque. Take Exit 204, and head south. The Walnut Canyon Visitor Center is located at the end of this 3 mile road.

Aaron’s Mechanical Services Asks Is Your Home Warm and Comfortable?

Is there a general agreement about what the temperature of a house should be? I know that advice has been given about having a home too warm or too cold but am not sure what a healthy temperature is.

Do you like a very warm house in winter but don't like the energy bills that come with that level of comfort?

Do you keep your programmable thermostat at 68 degrees Fahrenheit? Do you have kids that are all healthy with no special needs? Are there elderly in your home? Honestly, I'd like it higher but I want to save on energy costs, be a bit more environmentally conscious and 68 degrees works well, as our house is newer and very well insulated.

Can you say the same about your home?

Set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature, which varies from 65 to 72. You should not be turning your thermostat up to get to the recommended lowest temperature of 68. Remember the ads that say turn your thermostat down to 68 in the winter. Well, if you need to turn yours up to get to that, you are living in a house that is just too cold.

Here is what energy.gov has to say about setting your thermostat. You can easily save energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to 68°F while you're awake and setting it lower while you're asleep or away from home. By turning your thermostat back 10° to 15° for 8 hours, you can save 5% to 15% a year on your heating bill -- a savings of as much as 1% for each degree if the setback period is eight hours long. The percentage of savings from setback is greater for buildings in milder climates than for those in more severe climates.

A common misconception associated with thermostats is that a furnace works harder than normal to warm the space back to a comfortable temperature after the thermostat has been set back, resulting in little or no savings. In fact, as soon as your house drops below its normal temperature, it will lose energy to the surrounding environment more slowly. The lower the interior temperature, the slower the heat loss. So the longer your house remains at the lower temperature, the more energy you save, because your house has lost less energy than it would have at the higher temperature.

So can I ask the question again… Are your rooms warm enough? Is your home comfortable? If not take a moment and call Aaron’s Mechanical Services at 623-388-4436.

Aaron’s Mechanical Services Asks What is Valley of the Sun “Cold”?

If you have seen the National Weather Service’s forecast for this week is a pretty good example of “Cold” for the Phoenix Metro Area. The highs are expected to be in the low to mid sixties and the lows running from the high thirties to the mid-forties. For long time Phoenix residents that qualifies for cold.

You can tell a tourist in this kind of weather.  They are the ones that are still in shorts and shirt sleeves.  The native Phoenician is the one wearing a parka and mukluks.  Yes, it is that much of a contrast.

That comes from the twenty or so degrees difference that we also call hot. When our tourist is at home an eighty degree day is called hot and here in Phoenix we think that 80 degrees is downright cool.  We don’t talk hot until we see the mercury push well north of the century mark. If fact I think the news media isn’t allowed to say the “H” word until the payment begins to melt here in the Valley of the Sun.

So if you have been running your furnace don’t feel that you have wimped out.

Speaking of running your furnace, how is that going?  Is your heating system doing a good job of keeping you warm?  Perhaps more important how is it doing in its consumption of energy to keep you warm? Will you need a bank loan to pay your energy bills?

Did You Know?

That the forecast has just one day that gets into the very low seventies in the next ten days?

Depending on where you live in the Valley of the Sun expect to see at least three nights with lows in the thirties.

We may even see two more days of rain expected in the next ten days.

We are sure getting ready to move into winter in the southwest. No, we can’t claim we have bitter winter weather but it sure feels cold to us desert dwellers.

The Maricopa County Flood District has installed and maintains 312 precipitation gages throughout Maricopa and surrounding counties which measure the amount and timing of rainfall in real time. This data is transmitted to the District and stored on the base computers.

The Phoenix Metro Area is ahead of the average rainfall (8.03 inches) for the 2014 year.

Aaron’s Mechanical Services Says Take Care With Winter Heating

Did you know that keeping warm over winter months can help prevent colds, flu or more serious health problems like pneumonia. Find out some simple things you can do to keep warm and stay healthy and make the best use of your heating at home.

Keep warm at home during the day, heat your main living room to around 68-72º Fahrenheit and the rest of the house to at least 68º F heat all the rooms you use in the day. If you can’t heat all your rooms, make sure you keep your living room warm throughout the day and heat your bedroom before going to bed.

Set the timer on your heating to come on before you get up and switch off when you go to bed in very cold weather set the heating to come on earlier, rather than turn the thermostat up, so you won’t be cold while you wait for your home to heat up.

To stay warm during the night you should keep the temperature above 65° F in your bedroom overnight. If you use a fire or heater in your bedroom during winter, open the window or door a little at night for ventilation. Avoid using an electric blanket with a hot water bottle as you could electrocute yourself.

If you have an electric blanket, check what type it is – some are designed only to warm the bed before you get in and should not to be used throughout the night. Make sure your electric blanket is safe to use by getting it tested every three years.

Eat a well-balanced diet will help keep you warm and healthy in the winter. Make sure you and your family eat at least one hot meal a day. Soup can be nutritious and warming, and inexpensive to make or buy.

Staying active is good for your health, walking for example can be good for you. If the weather prevents you getting outside, stay active indoors - catch up on all the household tasks you've been putting off.

Talk - especially if you've been stuck in the house for a few days - telephone friends and family. If you have elderly relatives or neighbors who might need help, please check up on them.

Cold weather payments
You may be entitled to financial help during cold spells. Find out more about cold weather payments.

Make sure your heating is safe. It is important to make sure your heating is safe and that your house or workplace is properly ventilated, to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Remember December 7th 1941

Yes, today is December the 8th but at Aaron’s Mechanical Services we have taken today to remember that yesterday Sunday the 7th was the day of the “A Date Which Will Live in Infamy.”

At 7:48 am local time the Japanese Imperial forces attacked Pearl Harbor Hawaii.

The attack was intended as a preventive action in order to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet from interfering with military actions the Empire of Japan was planning in Southeast Asia against overseas territories of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States. There were simultaneous Japanese attacks on the U.S.-held Philippines and on the British Empire in Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

The attack came as a profound shock to the American people and led directly to the American entry into World War II in both the Pacific and European theaters. The following day, December 8, the United States declared war on Japan. Domestic support for non-interventionism, which had been strong, disappeared. Clandestine support of Britain (e.g., the Neutrality Patrol) was replaced by active alliance. Subsequent operations by the U.S. prompted Germany and Italy to declare war on the U.S. on December 11, which was reciprocated by the U.S. the same day.

Various military installations were attacked by 353 Japanese fighter planes, bombers, and torpedo planes in two waves, launched from six aircraft carriers. All eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged, with four being sunk. All but one. the U.S.S. Arizona were later raised, and six of the eight battleships were returned to service and went on to fight in the war. The Japanese also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship, and one minelayer.

One-hundred-eighty-eight U.S. aircraft were destroyed; 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded. Important base installations such as the power station, shipyard, maintenance, and fuel and torpedo storage facilities, as well as the submarine piers and headquarters building (also home of the intelligence section) were not attacked. Japanese losses were light: 29 aircraft and five midget submarines lost, and 65 servicemen killed or wounded. One Japanese sailor, Kazuo Sakamaki, was captured.

USS Arizona was a Pennsylvania-class battleship built in the mid-1910s. Named in honor of the 48th state's recent admission into the union, the ship was the second and last of the Pennsylvania-class of "super-dreadnought" battleships. Although commissioned in 1916, the ship remained stateside during World War I. Shortly after the end of the war, Arizona was one of a number of American ships that briefly escorted President Woodrow Wilson to the Paris Peace Conference.

During the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, Arizona was bombed. She exploded and sank, killing 1,177 officers and crewmen. Unlike many of the other ships sunk or damaged that day, Arizona could not be fully salvaged, though the Navy removed parts of the ship for reuse. The wreck still lies at the bottom of Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial, dedicated on 30 May 1962 to all those who died during the attack, straddles the ship's hull.

Does The Damp Air Feel Colder?

The feeling of cold depends on many factors --- for instance, the wind, humidity, whether the person is standing in the sun or shade, whether he/she is exercising, the clothing worn, and whether his/her skin is damp.

Let's first look at how heat is taken away from the body. To simplify the argument, let's assume that the body is dry, exposed, motionless, in still air and in the shade. The question now becomes: whether dry air or damp air takes away heat from the body faster, i.e. whose thermal conductivity ('conductivity' from hereon) is higher.

Many people think that the conductivity is higher for moist air than for dry air. However, this is not true. The conductivity of water vapor is actually much less than that of dry air. So, if damp air (i.e. water vapor) has any effect on the conductivity of air, it would make it less conductive, not more.

So in damp air you should feel warmer. But the truth is when air is more humid it is more likely to be unstable or to be part of a storm front and the air movement is the real reason you feel colder. Moving air, i.e. wind, which carries heat away from the body. People sometimes call it the 'wind chill' effect. It feels much colder in a windy day than when it is calm.

If we move from damp air to a wet person (actually in the rain or a body of water) then what happens?  The conductivity of water is about 25 times that of air, i.e. water conducts heat 25 times faster than air. You may feel chilly standing in still air at 40 degrees Fahrenheit, but it would be much harder to jump into a pool at 40 degrees water temperature. In fact you would suffer hypothermia in just a few minutes time.

So while high humidity slows the cooling effect of evaporation (which would tend to warm us), it also increases the moisture level in our clothing. The damp clothes cool our bodies by conducting heat away from us, which makes us feel colder. And in winter, colder air wins this battle!

Now you know why that high humidity makes the hot air feel even hotter and that is why you are more likely to be adversely affected in a high humidity - high heat city.

So damp cold air or damp hot air has the same effect – you feel warmer.

No Burn Days and Nights Are Closer Than You Think

Our cool fall nights are just right for a warm toasty fire to take the chill off.  You do know it is cheaper to run your furnace than stoke your fireplace? But, the there is nothing better to feel than the warmth from your fireplace.  You sure can’t toast marshmallows around the furnace.

We haven’t even talked about the subtle glow that lights the room from a fireplace.

OK, now play that nose of a record being scratched… While I yell “Oh. Sh.. it’s a no burn day!”

Here in the Valley of the Sun we have a weather phenomenon called temperature inversion and when that happens all the stale air trapped next to the streets and homes of the Phoenix Metro area and the Maricopa County Air Quality Department declares a no burn day.

That means no fireplace usage. To take the chill off now means using a conventional furnace or HVAC system.

No Burn Day restrictions are put into effect when air pollution is expected to reach or exceed the federal standard.

While No Burn Day restrictions are typically issued in conjunction with a High Pollution Advisory, the Air Quality Department director has the authority to call a No Burn Day and enforce wood-burning restrictions. Residents are asked to refrain from wood-burning in fireplaces, woodstoves and outdoor fire pits during a No Burn Day, otherwise they will be subject to fines. Does the wood police actually come around?

All wood-burning restriction notices will be posted to the Maricopa County Air Quality Department home page. You can also call them at 602-506-6400 to listen to the latest pre-recorded wood-burning restriction information.

The Air Quality Department has 24 air monitoring stations throughout Maricopa County. You may look at monitoring station site results any time of the day or night. We do caution you however to take a look at the big picture. Pollutants such as ozone and dust can move from city to city depending on the weather conditions. So, just because you may be having a great “air” day in your city, you will want to see what's happening in surrounding areas. We measure air quality standards over the entire county.

Hard To Talk Heating While Phoenix Is Breaking High Record Temperatures

Even to me it seems strange to talk about heating system when the Valley of the Sun has recently tied one and broke another weather record and on the same day even. Can you imagine two highs temperature records on the same day, seems kind of strange.

The National Weather Service stated that in the Phoenix Metro Area (Think Sky Harbor International Airport) on Thanksgiving Day November 27th, 2014 we tied the record high temperature for Thanksgiving Day (set on Thursday November 23th, 1950) at eighty-seven degrees Fahrenheit. But for the actual November date of the 27th we broke the old record of 86 set on November 27th in 1950.

Since Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays that the day of the week is set (Thursday) but the celebration date moves by calendar year you can have two records for either the high or low temperature ever year. So Thanks giving 2014 turns out to be a banner year for local highs.

It seems only in Phoenix can we have days that start cold enough for heating and end with daytime highs that qualify for air conditioning relief here and certainly in every other state as well. In many areas of the valley saw lows on November 27th in the upper thirties and we finished the day about fifty degrees higher, Wow!

Have you had your heating system tune-up this year? Is your home ready for the cold nights and days that lay ahead?

It seems we could have a weather system move in from the California coast in the next few days and we will end up cold and damp. You will appreciate your heat then for sure. Is your furnace or HVAC system ready?  Are you sure?

When you are used to a dry heat damp cold days chill you right to the bone! At least that is how they affect me.

Did You Know?

The average low temperature for the Phoenix Metro area in December is the mid to low forties.

So are you ready for forty-two to forty-five degrees in the coming nights? Is your furnace ready to warm up your house? Taking a shower early in the mornings is chilly (OK, cold) when the temperature is low and your furnace won’t run.

Mix in some days that will rainy and cooler and a furnace, HVAC system or fireplace will feel real nice and welcome.

At Aaron’s Mechanical Service we want you to stay comfortable all year round.  If your HVAC unit needs service or replacement please think of us and call at 623-388-4436 and we will come to you and solve your heating system service needs.

Cool Arizona Places: Fresh Arizona Turkeys

Many people feel that eating local and fresh is much better for you than food that is frozen many months ago and shipped across the country. Perhaps the best example of this is fresh Thanksgiving Turkeys.

Did you know that not only can you buy fresh not frozen turkeys, you can buy turkeys raised right here in Arizona. Please note that this information is a bit late and all the turkeys are probably already gone. But, there is always next year.

In Dewey, on the only farm in Arizona licensed for commercial turkey sales, about 14,000 fresh birds are raised and processed for Thanksgiving, and another 6,000 for Christmas.

There’s also another source, but it takes more effort: You can hunt your own turkey in the wild, one per person each year. Each type has its merits.

Young’s Farm 17 miles east of Prescott, said the farm is the only place in the state to get fresh turkeys like these. The farm sells the birds at grocery stores statewide, at the farm store and over the Internet.

Starting in late June, Young’s gets day-old poults or chicks bred at a California hatchery and raises the turkeys in a large barn, “with lots of room to move around and exercise. Unlike many commercial turkey operations, the birds are not kept caged or tightly packed into pens, a procedure used to hasten fattening.

“What we have come to learn over the years of raising turkeys is that the less stress you put on the bird, the better it will taste,” Teskey said. “And therefore, having room to roam around, to eat and drink when it wants, not giving injections, it all reduces stress.”

Young’s turkeys eat a milo-corn-soy grain mix but receive no growth hormones or stimulants, she said.

Federal agencies allow antibiotics to be given to poultry to prevent disease and increase food efficiency, but residues must not be found at the time of slaughter.

The supply is less predictable in the wild. Ron Engel-Wilson, a bird specialist with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, said there are some 14,000 to 20,000 Merriam’s turkeys roaming in the state, primarily in northern Arizona’s ponderosa pine forests. The actual number depends on the time of year and other factors, he said.

Merriam’s turkeys are native to Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado but also are found in California, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Oregon, Nebraska and the Dakotas.

This year, 4,635 permits were sold to hunt Merriam’s turkeys during Arizona’s weeklong fall season in October. The number harvested hasn’t been tallied, but 806 birds were bagged last fall.

“This year’s fall harvest should be higher,” Engel-Wilson said. So what’s the advantage there?

Well, there’s the chance to enjoy the outdoors, for one. People watching what they eat can also enjoy the fact that wild turkeys are leaner than captive-bred Butterball or Jennie-O’s found in grocery freezers.

“Once the turkey is skinned, there is very little difference between the wild turkeys,” Engel-Wilson said. “Birds of comparable age are probably similar in toughness.”

You can contact Young’s Farm through their website: www.youngsfarminc.com/young/turkeys.htm

What Does Your Heating System and Thanksgiving Have In Common?

Here in the Phoenix Metro Area November brings on the start of the Holidays and we celebrate Thanksgiving. It also starts our heating season here in the Valley of the Sun.

Of course you need to plan your Thanksgiving feast to include what to serve and who you will serve it to. We all look to invite family and friends to enjoy the holiday meal.  It seems at Thanksgiving we all know some folks that would like to be invited because otherwise they will be eating at a local fast food place.

We want all of our visitors to be comfortable.  That means you need your HVAC to be ready for Arizona weather.  That means Heating and Cooling perhaps even in the same day. Yes, this November 27th you could need heating in the morning and cooling in the afternoon as our Phoenix Metro area temperatures may reach eight-five degrees Fahrenheit during the peak of the afternoon solar gain.

Not many places in the United States can say that they have a day where both heating and cooling are needed in the twenty-four hour period. Here in the Valley of the Sun we can actually use both heating and cooling in the same day. It doesn’t happen very often, but it does happen. An efficient Heat Pump is one of the few units that can do that without some sort of changes to the ventilation and ducting system.

A heat pump, rather than creating heat, simply moves heat. It may move thermal energy from cooler outdoor air into the warmer inside, or from the cooler refrigerator interior into the ambient air. It pushes heat in a direction counter to its normal flow (cold to hot, rather then hot to cold). Thus we use the word pump.

A typical thermostat does require you to manually change them from cool to heat even with a heat pump.

There are now water heaters that use heat pump technology to heat or partially heat your domestic hot water. So it looks like you can count on heat pump technology to be used in more domestic services as time goes on.  Heat pumps are even being used in conjunction with the water from swimming pools.

Combining passive solar panels to help heat both domestic hot water and your backyard swimming pool can save on your energy costs as well. Yes, that sort of makes sunshine as part of your home’s heat pump.

If your heating system or HVAC unit needs service or replacement please think of us and call at 623-388-4436 and we will come to you and solve your cooling / heating unit’s service needs.
