What Does A No Burn Night Mean?

We all love a good fire on a cold evening.  But, the Valley of the Sun has many nights when the county has a “No Burn” night.  What exactly does that mean? We are going to use the Maricopa County rules as an example.

Woodburning restrictions are governed by the following Maricopa County Rules:

When air pollution levels are on the rise and weather conditions create dry, stagnant conditions, the Maricopa County Air Quality Department will issue a No Burn Day. Restrictions last for a 24-hour period, starting at midnight, and include a ban on woodburning activity including fireplaces, fire pits or open outdoor fires. The purpose of the No Burn Day restriction is to avoid adding pollution to our air when the forecast suggests air quality will approach or exceed the federal health standard.

• Existing ordinance that prohibits woodburning in residential fireplaces on a No Burn Day 

• Extends fireplace restrictions to wood burning chimineas, outdoor fire pits, and similar outdoor 
fires on No Burn Days 

• Fines range from $50 up to $250 depending on the number of woodburning violations an 
individual receives per year 

• Increases fourth and subsequent violations to $250 fine

• Burning anything other than natural gas logs in an outdoor fire pit or fireplace on a No burn Day is prohibited. This includes burning at restaurants, businesses or hotels. 

• Burning vegetation from land cleared for construction on any day, at any time is restricted.

Thoughts On Replacing Your Furnace

If you're a homeowner, at least once in your home's life, you may need to replace the heating and cooling system. And with the rising prices of propane, continual shift in heating fuel (electricity, natural gas or bottled gas) prices and steady climb of electricity, it makes fiscal sense to find a system that is going to work best in your area. Since some heating and cooling systems can last up to 20 years or more, finding out which system is going to cost the least amount in fuel costs over two decades can be difficult at best.

One thing about fuel prices is that they change over time. One of the most stable forms of energy is electricity and it will probably continue that way for some time. If your home is heated with electricity, then switching to a geothermal air source heat pump is probably the best option for you. These heat your home as well as cool it efficiently.

The average air-source heat pump is like an air conditioning unit, with a few extra parts thrown in. A heat pump works by pumping heat out of your home when in cooling mode and pumping warmer air into your home while it's heating. It pumps cooler or warmer air from the outside air directly to the air compressor, increasing energy efficiency dramatically.

Geothermal heat pumps work in the same way except instead of pumping hot or cold air from the outdoors into the compressor; it pumps the ambient air from a series of underground coils. The underground temperature remains steady in all areas, even in the most extreme temperature regions of the world, making a geothermal heat pump the most energy efficient of all heating and cooling systems.

Unfortunately, the high prices of geothermal heating installations often discourage homeowners from installing these energy saving air handlers. The Federal Stimulus Bill can alleviate some of that burden. Until the end of 2016, a 30 percent credit can be gained, making them almost as affordable as conventional heating and cooling systems. Some states like North Carolina offer an additional 35 percent tax credit, increasing the savings even further, making them a viable alternative to conventional heating and cooling systems.

What's more, further advantages like year round heating and cooling, hook ups to water heating systems and low maintenance costs help to make the geothermal heat pump one of the best choices for long term savings when installing a new heating or cooling system in your home.

This time of year it is always a good idea to keep track of the projected (or forecast) overnight temperature.  Even in the Valley of the Sun you can get a fairly hard freeze every once in a while and that can cause havoc on your exposed water pipes.

Even the most intrepid do-it-yourselfer shudders at the thought of a burst water pipe. If not immediately noticed, a ruptured pipe can be both expensive and time-consuming to clean up.

Fortunately, the pipe that's most susceptible to extremely cold weather, the outdoor hose bib or faucets also one of the easiest to protect from freezing. Replace an existing hose faucet with a freeze-proof faucet. If you are an experienced DIY you can do it yourself in just a few hours.

Learn To Save The Most On Your Heating Costs

We all want to spend the least amount possible on our heating costs and at the same time have a warm and comfortable home.  First call us at Aaron’s Mechanical Service for a heating system safety check and tune-up. If your furnace or heating system isn’t running correctly it is not possible to save the most money on heating costs.

Once your system is running at peak efficiency here are some tips to help you save enven more money.

Don’t Overheat
For many people, 68°F is a comfortable temperature.

Automate Your Home’s Efficiency
Turn the thermostat down to 55°F before you go to bed and when you’re away from home or asleep. If you have trouble remembering, you can use a programmable thermostat to automate the process. Typically, you can save about 2% on heating energy for each degree that you lower the thermostat for eight hours.

Turning down the thermostat from 70° to 55° for eight hours can cut heating costs as much as 30%. Contrary to popular belief, it does not take more energy to bring a house back to the desired temperature than to maintain it at that temperature.

Weatherize
Don’t lose the heat you’d paid for due to poor seals around doors and windows, other air leaks, and lack of insulation. Also, consider whether it might pay to upgrade your windows.

Insulate Yourself and Your Family
The most basic source of comfort is dressing warmly in winter. The layered look is not only fashionable, it’s strategic.

Don’t Heat Unoccupied Rooms
Turn down the thermostats, or close the registers and shut the doors to rooms not in use.

Remove Window Mounted Air Conditioning Units
If you have room air conditioners, either take them out in the winter or cover them well. They tend to be poor insulators.

If your heating system is 10 to 20 years old, you should consider replacing it with something more efficient These older furnaces have efficiencies as low as 55% to 65%. The lowest efficiencies of today’s forced-air and boiler furnaces are 78% and 80% respectively.

Unusual Warnings For The Phoenix Metro Area

In the Phoenix Metro area we are very used to see excessive heat warnings during the summer.  We have a good understanding of how to protect ourselves from the heat and what not to do.  We want to avoid heat stress or worse a heat stroke during our one-hundred or one hundred-ten plus days.

As December rolls on we are now getting the unusual (but not unheard of) cold temperature warnings. We need to protect our plants and outdoor pets.  We also need to do other things to protect ourselves and perhaps check on our neighbors so they are protected as well.

In an area that has the well deserved nickname of the Valley of the Sun it seems strange to read or hear the National Weather Service issuing special weather statements that are all about the cold temperatures. While we aren’t setting records each day this is a very long cold snap for the metro area. Normally our temperature extremes are just a day or two duration at a time.

By tonight we will have had three nights in a row with our overnight low below freezing within Metro Phoenix. If we add in the outlying areas the run of below freezing will extent to nearly a week in duration.

Cool Places: Remembering Santa Claus Arizona

Every Wednesday we write about a Cool Place to visit in Arizona.  This week we reach back to a time when just north-west of Kingman Arizona you could visit Santa Claus year-round.  Sad to say it is long gone, but we are taking a look back in time to tell you about Santa Claus Arizona.

Santa Claus (also known as Santa Claus Acres) is currently an uninhabited desert town in Mohave County, Arizona, United States. Originating in 1937, Santa Claus lies approximately 14 miles northwest of Kingman, Arizona, along U.S. Route 93 immediately north of Hermit Drive and just south of both Grasshopper Junction, Arizona, and the Junk Art of Chloride, a group of metal statues in Chloride, Arizona, that include a flamingo made out of a motorcycle gas tank. Characterized in 1988 as "a little roadside place on the west shoulder of U.S. Route 93," Santa Claus receives traffic from motorists driving between Phoenix, Arizona, and Las Vegas, Nevada, or Hoover Dam.

In connection with its beginnings in 1937, Santa Claus received several attractions and buildings, including the Kit Carson Guest House which was renamed the Santa Claus Inn. Nina Talbot, a real estate woman and the owner of Santa Claus, made plans to use the Santa theme in a parched desert location to attract buyers for her surrounding, subdivided land. By 1942, the town of Santa Claus had become a full-fledged tourist spot.

After twelve years operating Santa Claus, Talbot's land resale plans for Santa Claus never materialized, in part because the only inhabitants in the town were the ones working there. Talbot sold her interest in the town in 1949. Others made plans during the 1950s to improve Santa Claus, which received publicity through the writings of American novelist and famed science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein and U.S. pioneer restaurant rater Duncan Hines and through 1961 remailing service advertisements offering to postmark letters from Santa Claus, for a small fee.

The popularity of Santa Claus went in decline in the 1970s. In July 1983, owner Tony Wilcox unsuccessfully offered to sell Santa Claus for $95,000, which was reduced to $52,500 by 1988. All remaining operating businesses in the town closed in 1995. In the 2000s, the town became difficult to locate and the few remaining structures and attractions were weather worn. What presently remains is several vandalized buildings, a wishing well, and the "Old 1225", a derailed, pink children's train tagged with graffiti that mar the hand-painted renderings of Santa and his elves on the train.

Sad to say there is little left of this once thriving spot.  It is easy to miss as you drive by on your way to Las Vegas.

In the Twenties, Are You Kidding Me?

The National Weather Service says that in the next few days the temperature will drop into the twenties in the out-lying area of the Valley of the Sun.  For the Phoenix Metro area (well, the out-skirts anyway) to drop anywhere near twenty-five degrees Fahrenheit is almost unheard of these days.

I know yesterday I mentioned that temperatures near freezing I considered cold.  But hearing we could see temps dropping into the twenties near Phoenix that means winter really has arrived. When the temperature is the twenties (F) it is dangerous for people and animals.  Make sure yours have adequate shelter and protection.

If you would like to see a couple of examples of cities just outside of  Phoenix, here they are; Sunday December 8th Maricopa Arizona has a forecast low of 26 degrees Fahrenheit and Wickenburg will have a low of 24 degrees on Sunday the 8th.  If that isn’t cold enough for you could drive north a couple of hours and visit Flagstaff where they will have snow showers and be just a degree or two above zero.  You have to admit that qualifies as cold.

OK, it is not Alaska cold at 50 degrees below zero, but it is cold weather for Arizona.

In 1944, bon Davis homesteaded this area. Dahl and Gaske Development Company later bought the Davis Homestead, subdivided it and named it North Pole. The name was selected to attract the toy industry to manufacture articles made in “North Pole”. This endeavor failed to blossom, but North Pole has continued to grow. North Pole as a theme city, “Where the spirit of Christmas lives year round”. Many streets bear holiday names: Santa Claus Lane, Snowman Lane, Kris Kringle, Mistletoe, Holiday Rd., Saint Nicholas Drive, North Star Drive, Blitzen, and Donnor. Street lights are decorated in candy cane motifs and many buildings are painted with Christmas colors and designs.

Our Second Cold Snap For 2013

Have you seen this week’s forecast?  The National Weather Service says that on Wednesday this week the temperature will drop into the sixties and by Thursday the high will only be in the fifties.

If you think warm is better than cold, the lows in some Phoenix Metro areas will be at or below freezing. That is cold or very cold in my book.  Is your heating system ready?  Do you want to wait to find out?  Is a failure to heat what will cause you to call and get help?

If is no fun getting up to find your house is just a few degrees above freezing.  You are just three or four days from finding out that you now NEED to call for a service call on your furnace, HVAC or heating system.

So, can I ask is your home and heating system ready for the second and even colder winter (Valley of the Sun) weather?

Did You Know?

You can save energy with a few simple tips;

Make sure vents and grills are unobstructed. Arrange your furniture and drapes so that all output vents and intake grilles are free from obstruction. This will reduce the heating load on your system for more economical operation.

Avoid excessive use of exhaust fans. Excessive use of kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans will make your system work harder. This will increase energy consumption and costs. Keep costs in check by making wise use of exhaust fans.

Reduce the house temperature one degree at a time (down to 68-65) and wear a sweater or fleece to stay comfy.

At night or when you're away, set your thermostat for lower temperatures (down to 55 or lower). Keep your window drapes closed at night, and close doors to seldom-used rooms until you need them.

Caulk windows and doors to keep heat inside and cold air out. Ask your utility company for a home energy audit to find out how to improve your home's insulation and energy efficiency.

Purchase "green energy" when that option is available from your utility company. (Green energy is renewable and sustainable energy.)

Arizona Thanksgiving Places: Holidays At Home or Eating Out

We, here at Aaron’s Mechanical Service, would like to wish everyone a "Happy Thanksgiving".

Many of you are either hosting the family and friends get-together or going to one but we also know that for whatever reason many of us eat out for our Thanksgiving Dinner.

Sometimes there's just a lot going on, and having your Thanksgiving dinner out is a viable alternative to cooking. The best thing about going out to eat on Thanksgiving Day is that you don't have to spend hours or days preparing, or hours cleaning up. The worst thing about Thanksgiving dinner out is no leftovers!

Many restaurants serve Thanksgiving brunch or dinner or both! They may be located at local resorts or casinos. They may be independently owned or chains. All price ranges are represented, so you can have from an elegant Thanksgiving dining experience or a casual family meal with all the kids. A quick Google search will lead you to one in your neighborhood.

Also consider the many Phoenix area grocery stores where you can pick up a Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings.  Nearly every grocery store has some type of Thanksgiving dinner so you can do it up right with little to no work.

What follows are some of Thanksgiving trivia tidbits, hope they brings back memories and put a little smile on your face.

The first Thanksgiving feast was very different than what we use today. Lobster, rabbit, chicken, fish, squashes, beans, chestnuts, hickory nuts, onions, leeks, dried fruits, maple syrup and honey, radishes, cabbage, carrots, eggs, and goat cheese are thought to have made up the first Thanksgiving feast.

Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States.

Sarah Josepha Hale, an American magazine editor, persuaded Abraham Lincoln to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. She is also the author of the popular nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb"

Abraham Lincoln issued a 'Thanksgiving Proclamation' on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving.

The annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920's.

Will You Have A Houseful on Thanksgiving?

Well, the first of the “BIG” holidays is upon us.  We are all getting ready for Thanksgiving in one way or the other.  We are either planning on going to someone’s home or we are getting our home ready for company.

More than 250 million turkeys will be served on Thanksgiving this year.

2.6 billion pounds is the total weight of sweet potatoes — another popular Thanksgiving side dish — produced by major sweet potato producing states in 2012. North Carolina (1.2 billion pounds) produced more sweet potatoes than any other state, followed by California, Mississippi and Louisiana.

How Fast Can A Turkey Trot? Would You Believe 25 MPH.

There are four places in the United States named after the holiday's traditional main course. Turkey Creek, LA, was the most populous in 2012, with 440 residents, followed by Turkey, TX (415), Turkey, NC (295) and Turkey Creek, AZ (294). There are also two townships in Pennsylvania with "Turkey" in the name: Upper Turkeyfoot and Lower Turkeyfoot. (Please note that the Turkey Creek, Arizona, population total pertains to the 2010 Census).

Well Winter Weather Has Invaded The Valley of the Sun

Starting Thursday night (November 21st) the rain showers moved into the Phoenix Metro area.  The rain continued through Friday, Saturday and into Sunday morning. Along with the rain the temperatures dropped into the forties during the nighttime hours.

The National Weather Service states that these temps are ten to fifteen degrees below normal for this time of the year. 

Many weekend events were either canceled or postponed due to the weather. The Valley of the Sun wasn’t ready for the cold temperatures and all the rain we got over the weekend.

If you have been following the news you know that the northern part of Arizona got lots of the white fluffy stuff.  Mush of the west was affected by this large storm and now it is moving east and the Thanksgiving holiday travel will be derailed by this large storm system.

 Was this past weekend the first time you tried your furnace or heating system?  Did everything work as expected?  Did you get any strange smells?

Now is the time to get your heating system tune-up.  Don’t waste money on a furnace that isn’t running at peak efficiency.  Worse yet is a system that isn’t operating safely.

Yes, over the next few days the daytime highs will move back to the very low seventies. Our over- night lows will still be in the forties. I don’t know about you but that is too cold to be without heat.

Underwood North Dakota was -13 degrees breaking the old record of -9 set in 1985
Bottineau North Dakota was -14 degrees breaking the old record of -13 set in 1898
On the other end of the scale El Campo Texas tied for their record high on the day at 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The very next day they were in the sixties for the high.

On November 23rd 2013 the U.S. broke thirty-five records for precipitation.
Punkin Center AZ got 1.52 inches of precipitation breaking the old record of 1.40 set in 1984
Kitt Peak AZ got 1.70 inches of precipitation breaking the old record of 0.40 set in 1996
Houston-Westbury Texas got 2.25 inches of precipitation breaking the old record of 1.21 set in 1957

Yes, Some Tax Credits and Programs Are Still Available

Did you know that there are still tax credits for certain heating and cooling related installations and upgrades.  I am not saying that they are easy to get, since many require that you qualify for them. But the tax credits can defray part of the cost of these energy related home improvements.

Arizona Places: Cerreta Candy Company

Because Cerreta is a small candy company, they can assure their customers the highest possible quality at everyday affordable prices. It is Cerreta’s goal to be an everyday candy company, not just a company that sells candy on holidays. Their presence in grocery stores accomplishes this goal, but holiday business still makes up a large part of the in-house retail operations at the plant in Glendale. Easter, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Dad’s Day are busy times of the year for the Cerreta family.

The Cerreta Candy Company is an old family owned business. Founded 40 years ago, by Jim Cerreta, Sr. who learned candy making in his father-in-law’s factory in Ohio. Jim passed the trade to his entire family.

Today four of Jim’s sons are actively involved in every aspect of the candy business. Jim, Jr. is in charge of the caramel operation, where he makes caramel, Camelbacks, and caramel popcorn.

Joe Cerreta oversees production of the cream centers, where he combines modern methods with old fashion candy making techniques.

Even the wives get into the act. Joe’s wife Marisa gives daily tours to the public, and her enthusiasm is contagious!

Marisa & Joe’s sons work in the factory in the summer. These two boys represent Cerreta’s fourth generation of candy makers.

Get The Correct New Furnace

Are you thinking about buying a new furnace or heating system? Is the first thing that comes to mind, and is generally the most pressing concern, is what your new furnace will cost?.

You can essentially lower the purchase cost and the operating costs of the new system installed in your home by taking the time to carefully consider the potential HVAC contractors properly and then compare the cost of the different types of heating systems.

Sizing
Let's say you decide to purchase a ninety-eight percent efficiency or so furnace. You'll expect it to perform to peak efficiency, and rightly so. Your system will only perform to expectation if it's correctly sized. Your contractor must follow industry-leading practices for sizing the furnace, called the Manual J method, which involves calculating its capacity to put out heat compared to its energy input based on your home's size, window efficiency and other factors. When the system is sized correctly, you may be able to purchase a smaller (correctly sized) furnace that will cost you less to purchase.

Installation
The quality of installation will affect the operating costs associated with your new furnace. Although this won't affect the initial purchase price. It's important to select a reputable contractor properly trained in the actions necessary to correctly install your heating system. Energy Star estimates that homeowners can lower energy costs by as much as thirty percent when the HVAC installer follows its Quality Installation Guidelines. When installers fail to follow standard practice, ignoring factors like airflow rates and sealing ducts, your energy costs go up.

The contractor you choose to work with will make all the difference in the world. Forecast Shows Fall Is Truly Here

Have you looked at the National Weather Service forecast this morning? It sure looks they are predicting some great Arizona Fall days.  With lows showing in the forties coming soon and daytime highs with nothing higher than the mid-seventies, in fact in the next ten days we will see some of our highs in the sixties.

Yes, even some showers are just a few days away. Well Fall is here.  You have taken time to have your heating system tuned up or at least you have called us and have your tune-up scheduled, Right?

OK, for sure we know that some of you are still putting it off.  Can I ask what you are waiting for?  We are just thirty-seven days for Christmas.  You do want to be sure your home is warm and toasty for that early morning family holiday.

If you are planning a big family day for Thanksgiving (just ten days away) you know you will be up early and you will want to get up to a warm home.  It is no fun cooking and wearing a sweater or jacket with all the preparation you need to do.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner we thought we would have some cooking tips to consider this year.

Thawing a frozen turkey requires patience. The safest method is to thaw turkey in the refrigerator at 41 degrees F. Be sure to plan ahead — it takes approximately 4 to 5 days for a 20 pound turkey to fully defrost.

Plan on 20 minutes per pound in a 350 degrees Fahrenheit oven for a fully defrosted turkey.

A turkey will cook more evenly if it is not densely stuffed. Consider adding flavor by loosely filling the cavity with aromatic vegetables — carrots, celery, onion, turnips, rutabagas or garlic work nicely — or by carefully tucking fresh herbs underneath the breast skin. For the stuffing lovers in the family, cook the dressing in a casserole dish on the side.
