The Real Danger Of Do-It-Yourself Air Conditioner Repair

You may have noticed all the Home Improvement stores and television programs that tell us the DIY movement is the way to go. Rebuild your kitchen or bathroom in just a weekend is the typical message.

Build a porch or re-landscape the backyard in just an hour or so, if you watch the TV show that seems very doable.

That makes the idea of DIY AC repair very tempting. If you are looking to save yourself money or need to have your air conditioner repaired in a hurry.  However, there are dangers involved in do-it-yourself Air Conditioner repair.

These dangers should be taken seriously and should be pondered before you ever take to repairing your air conditioning unit on your own.

You should really consider experience vs. need when it comes to do-it-yourself AC repair. If you don’t have the experience necessary in order to properly repair your air conditioner, then you should be hiring a professional contractor to do the job for you.

The problem is that many people imagine that they can simply read an air conditioner repair article online or in a book and that that will be enough to assist them in getting the job done.

AC repair contractors actually go through a school in order to master the skills necessary to properly do AC repair. In the same regard, imagine if a person woke up one day and thought to themselves: “I think I will build houses today.” This person would not have the skills or training to do so but they have read an article here and there about it and go out and build a house.

Would you be willing to move into a house with your family and risk living in a poorly built home?

“Don’t worry I know what I’m doing,” those have been the final words of many people right before they have greatly injured themselves as the result of carrying out a task that they are not educated and trained to complete.

Additionally, many people have actually died as a direct result of attempting to repair or install their air conditioners on their own.

The Danger Of Do-It-Yourself Air Conditioning Repair have two danger areas – falls and electrocution. Touching 240 volts with 60amps of service is a fatal jolt. Falling from a single story roof will break your leg or back and if you have a two story home the fall can be fatal.

There is another danger that many people are not aware of when it comes to do-it-yourself air conditioning repair. That danger is: cost. The truth is that do-it-yourself AC repair is not effective in saving time or money. It will actually cost your more time and money to make these repairs on your own.

Play it safe and call Aaron’s Mechanical Services for all of your air conditioning and residential cooling needs.

Air Conditioning Repair Following Summer Storms

If this is your first summer in the Phoenix Metro area this weekend’s storms could have been quite a surprise. With the dust storms, the hail, heavy rains and very high winds may have been a very big wake-up call.

Depending on where you live you had all or just part of the storm events in your neighborhood. Damaging winds pushed over trees and power polls in some areas.  That takes very powerful winds to do that type of damage.

Have you inspected the case or shell surrounding your air conditioner?  That is something you should do or have it looked at by a service tech. Don’t go climbing on your roof.  Every year many people are injured falling from their roof or just trying to climb up (or down) the ladder.

Even if your AC unit is running fine now, it could have debris inside the case or damage caused by impacts to the fins or components behind the area of the case with the “dent”. Getting your AC Repaired before the weather damage can lead to more problems is the most cost effective way to go.

If your home got hit with just the dust storm you will want to replace your ac’s filters even if they are not scheduled for the change out. Even partially clogged filters will make your air conditioner work harder and end up costing you more money.

Did You Know?

25,000 (combined APS – SRP) homes and business were with our power following the storm.

The National Weather Service, said a couple of microbursts probably occurred in the Valley of the Sun overnight, but the one in north Phoenix was the most severe.

An area around 40th Street and Greenway had trees and power lines blown down. Some of the trees uprooted in the area landed on vehicles and structures.

APS tweeted Sunday (07272014) that it would reimburse those left without power for a 40 pound bag of ice or a 20 pound bag of dry ice if a receipt was sent to the APS post office box, at APS PO Box 53999, Sta 3536, Phoenix, 85072.

A temporary ground stop order issued at 6 p.m. for Sky Harbor meant that no new flights would be routed in from other airports until the ground stop was cleared. It affected departure times for flights heading to Phoenix and, because of connections here, delayed some outbound flights as well.

Air Conditioning Drains Can Cause Serious Water Damage

When it is this hot and humid in the Phoenix Metro area your air conditioner is literally removing gallons of water from your home every day.  Normally this is something you never have to think about.

Overtime the drain lines can become plugged or the joints can loosen and then water can get in areas where it should not.

This can result in two different problems water leaks that you can see in the ceiling or walls and more important water damage that you can’t see and may lead to serious structural damage to your home.

These AC drain lines can be installed and routed many different ways. If your AC Unit is roof mounted they may just runoff over your shingles or roof tiles.  Overtime that method may cause water to get under your roof structure and then cause visible leaks to your ceiling.  Sometimes the damage can cause the need for roof repairs as well.

Again, the serious problem is when you don’t see the damage occurring. The leak(s) can cause mold growth and wood rot to roof rafters and ceiling joists. Both can lead to problems that will require expensive major repairs.

Some installs route the AC water drains into your household plumbing drains and while this is usually the best practice the drains lines can still get clogged and develop leaks that will cause the same damaging conditions to exist.

Do you know if you have air conditioning drain leaks? Even if you don’t see water damage it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

Depending on your installation you can have what are called overflow pans that collect the condensate water and these can fail as well.  Most should have dedicated drain lines rather than just hold water until it evaporates. But they should be inspect during your yearly or bi-annual AC inspect and service.  You do have your HVAC system checked twice a year by a professional contractor, don’t you?

Before it is too late that is a good habit to get into. Tune up your Air Conditioner and Heating System twice a year. Once before the heating season and once before the cooling season. As you know in the Valley of the Sun that cooling season holds days where the temperature can reach life threatening levels. Play it safe and protect your family and pets.

Play it safe and call Aaron’s Mechanical Services for all of your heating and cooling needs.

Cool Arizona Places: Cool Off in the Painted Desert

This weekend you may want to go to another Arizona desert to cool off.  The Painted Desert that is... Located just off I-40 115 miles east of Flagstaff.

Both the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest are about 26 miles east of Holbrook on Interstate 40 where you will find the Painted Desert Visitor's Center.

The western-end of the Painted Desert can be accessed north on US 89 from Flagstaff AZ. Drive north past Cameron, into Tuba City. One could spend several hours meandering along either of these routes, enjoying the views, stopping for photo opportunities and shopping at trading posts and gift shops along the way.

The Painted Desert encompasses over 93,500 acres and stretches over 160 miles. It begins about 30 miles north of Cameron, Arizona near the southeastern rim of the Grand Canyon to the Petrified Forest about 26 miles east of Holbrook, AZ.

Along the way, it grazes the backyard of the Wupatki National Monument Indian Ruins. The Painted Desert derives its name for the multitude of colors ranging from lavenders to shades of gray with vibrant colors of red, orange and pink. It is a long expanse of badland hills and buttes and although barren and austere, it is a beautiful landscape of a rainbow of colors.

It took millions upon millions of years for nature to create this natural canvas of unimaginable design that some describe it as a multi-colored layered cake. The Painted Desert draws upon the earth’s indecisive nature. From shifts in the earth’s crust brought about by temperamental volcanoes and earthquakes to complete inundation by fresh and sea waters alike, a veritable host of elements have breathed life into this area. Colorful sediments of bentonite clay and sandstone, stacked in elegant layers, feed off the setting Arizona sun in an ever-changing display of colorful splendor.

While life went on here amongst the painted peaks, modern civilization didn’t begin to discover its existence until the 16th century. Spanish explorers who passed through are said to have named it "El Desierto Pintado", when confronted with the colorful horizon. From that point on, with the ancestral inhabitants long vanished, a variety of humans came and went, and in the 1800’s, military personnel, ranchers and tourists would venture on the scene. In 1906, after years of looting the finite supply of petrified wood, selected areas were designated as the original Petrified Forest National Monument.

Painted Desert Visitor Center: 8am-5pm daily Closed December 25th 928-524-3756

Is Your Air Conditioner Ready For 115 To 118 Highs?

If you were out at the lake this past weekend you may not have seen or read the National Weather Service forecast for this coming week.  They say that by Wednesday the Valley of the Sun will live up to its name and we will see highs that will approach or exceed record levels.

Can I ask, if you are sure your air conditioner is ready for temperatures that will approach or reach one-hundred-eighteen degrees Fahrenheit? Just how sure are you?  Are you gambling that your AC unit is going to be able to keep you cool and comfortable at these temps?

It seems we could see two to four days in the range of 112 plus.  Even in the Phoenix Metro Area temperatures in the range of one-hundred-fifteen degrees Fahrenheit is HOT.

All the family and friends you called and gave them a hard time about the cold wave (Polar Vortex) of last winter will be quite happy to tell you they are enjoying mid-eighties in the afternoon.

Please remember to take all the precautions needed to work and play in those kind of high temperatures.  Learn to safe in the Arizona summer heat.  It may be a dry heat, but these temperatures can be deadly.  I know the Chamber of Commerce doesn’t like to even use the word HOT when talking about our weather but, it will be HOT this week and we want you to be ready for it and stay cool and comfortable.

Make your one and only call to Aaron’s Mechanical Services at 623-388-4436 and we can be on our way to help with your AC Service Needs.

24 Hours / 7 Days a week we offer Valley Wide Service, that is Valley of the Sun or the Phoenix Metro Area.

Did You Know?

While the month of June holds the record high temperatures July is actually the hottest month of the year.

July is, on average, also the wettest month of the year. June is the driest month.

July 28th 1995 saw a record 121 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you live in the Valley of the Sun Aaron’s Mechanical Services wants to help you stay cool and comfortable all year round. Are you looking for fast and fair AC Repair? AC Repair for the Phoenix Metro Area

If you have gone online and you have done a Google Search for “AC Repair” you get the following message… About 371,000,000 results (0.55 seconds) Now just what are you supposed to do with that many responses?

The top three are paid ads and on the right side are twelve more paid ads.  Is either of those the best way to find a company to do your AC Repair?

What that leaves are the Google Results that are called “Organic” listings, that is from the fourth listing on down.  If you look very, very close you will see a thin line that separates the ads on top from the listing of companies that have found their way into the search results.

And not just online are the AC Repair results confusing.  While the use of the Yellow Pages have declined over the years a few people still use them.  Hundreds of companies are listed in the pages as well.  It is truly a matter of who do you trust and how soon will they get there?  The last thing you want is to be waiting in 100 degrees plus weather only to find that you time for AC Repair has come and gone and the promised tech is no-where to be seen.

You can ask your neighbors, friends, family, co-workers and even complete strangers for their advice and recommendations for AC Repair.  You can use one of the many review and advice sites that feature an AC Repair category and see what is written there.  You know this would be great if you could truly trust what is written there.  People who have a gripe are more likely to leave a complaint that a satisfied person is likely to leave praise.  It is harsh to say but many reviews aren’t real either. Just people who are pumping in false claims.

So is online the best way to get a good result for AC Repair.  Well perhaps we have to admit it is the only way.  But remember to do your homework and ask lots of questions.

Are they listed with the AZ Registrar of Contractors?

How long have they been in business?

It doesn’t work to ask for references … will they give you a bad one?

Do they take time to help on the phone or is it take a number and will call you back?.  (In reality that can happen sometimes even with good companies)

Can we just recommend that you call Aaron’s Mechanical Services at 623-388-4436 to start with and save you some time!

Cool Arizona Places: Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

One of the grandest and most photographed group of landmarks in the United States, Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park is a sprawling, sandy preserve that spans the border between Arizona and Utah, bathing the region in rich red hues. Dominated by crimson mesas and surreal sandstone towers – some as tall as 1,000 feet – the area is also known for dramatic, mesmerizing lighting, with the sun illuminating the towers and casting long shadows on the valley floor.

Located inside the Navajo Nation – one of the largest Native American tribes in the United States – Monument Valley is around four hours northeast of Flagstaff, near the Four Corners area.

History & Nature

Now part of the Colorado Plateau, Monument Valley was once a simple flat basin. Over millions of years, layers of sediment piled onto the basin, which was eventually uplifted by pressure from below. Then, wind and water slowly eroded the plateau, leaving Cutler Red siltstone and its sand behind, forming the wonders of Monument Valley that we enjoy today.

As a representation of the Arizona Old West, Monument Valley has been a favorite shooting location for Hollywood filmmakers since the early days of the frontier genre – starting with Stagecoach, in which John Wayne rides horseback across the region. Today, Monument Valley is still a popular backdrop for films and postcards – as well as the ancestral home of the Navajo people, who still reside here today as part of the Navajo Nation, the largest Native American reservation in the United States.

Things to Do

Start your visit at the Visitor Center, located north of Kayenta, off of US 163. From here, take in the panoramic view of the world-famous Mitten Buttes and Merrick Butte. You’ll also find information on self-guided tours, a restaurant with native Navajo cuisine and a gift shop. Guided jeep tours led by Navajo tour operators are also available at the center – giving you the best view available of some of the most notable landmarks in Monument Valley.

On your way out, stop along the roadside – around one mile from the visitor center – for a glimpse into Navajo culture from the many Native vendors selling arts, crafts, Navajo food and souvenirs.

Location: Valley Navajo Tribal Park Kayenta, AZ 86033 435-727-5870

AC Repairs After Sunday’s Monsoon Storm

Sunday July the 13th saw a very large monsoon storm move through the Phoenix metro area starting in the south east valley and exiting hours later in the northwest valley.  Several areas reported damage from microburst activity.  Residents of the east and south east valley saw power outages, damages to fences, roofs, storage sheds, many trees uprooted, flooded streets and impacts from wind-blown debris.

The rain totals varied from just sprinkles to an inch in some areas.

While the lower air temperature gave our AC units a bit of a break the airborne dust and debris led to some units needing emergency repairs.  If your air conditioner has stopped or seems to be struggling today it would not hurt to have it looked at.  You would be surprised to see what ends up inside after a severe monsoon storm.

Please remember that Aaron’s Mechanical Services is here to help you with any AC Repair needs, anytime.

Did You Know?

Monsoon storms create some of the biggest weather stories in Arizona every year. According to the National Weather Service, on a typical day during the Arizona Monsoon, powerful thunderstorms develop in the afternoons. As these thunderstorms dissipate, a microburst can produce severe wind gusts – gusts that blow at 57 miles per hour or more.

The Weather Service says from 1996 through 1999, there were a large number of monsoon weather events in Maricopa County. In the past five years, there has been more than $225 million dollars in damage to the Phoenix metro area from severe thunderstorm wind and hail.

On average, our area gets 56 monsoon days each year. The greatest number of monsoon days locally was 99 – a record set in 1984. In 1962, Phoenix saw the fewest number of monsoon days – just 27. It’s considered t be a monsoon day when the average dew point is at 55 degrees or higher.

August 14, 1996
This may be the costliest storm in Arizona history. A severe thunderstorm and its accompanying downburst hit the northwest portion of the Phoenix metro area – ripping off tile roofs and causing $160 million in damage. An Arizona record wind gust of 115 miles per hour is recorded at the Deer Valley Airport. A few locations had to go without power for several days.

Cool AZ Places: Is Great BBQ Worth A Two and Half Hour Drive?

Now there are BBQ fans and there are Barbeque FANS (or is that Barbecue?). Would you drive two and half hours north to Williams Arizona for great barbeque (and, of course, much cooler weather)?

If you would drive 2½ hours for great BBQ then you are truly a Barbeque FAN!

Oh, you want to know where, who or what, is the name of this BBQ place that is worth a two and half hour drive… Fair enough.

It is Cruiser’s Route 66 Café on the corner of East Route 66 and 3rd Street in downtown Williams Arizona. If you look up the word “eclectic” in the dictionary it really should feature a picture of Cruiser’s 66 Café.  But, the true test is the food and from personal experience we can say great BBQ! Yes, they have many other items on the menu but our sampling was chicken and brisket.

The food arrived at our table so fast that we actually didn’t expect it to be good at all.  Were we in for a surprise.  The food was… delicious, juicy and very tender.  The barbecue flavor was just right and didn’t rely on a sauce poured over the meat, but rather was cooked into it as great BBQ should be. Our BBQ half chicken was one of the best we have ever eaten.  Three of us shared the two meals and it was more than enough.

If your crowd is made up of big eaters you might want to stay with a plate full apiece.

This text, direct from the website that captures the experience from their (very accurate) point of view.

“Dine tonight in our authentic 1930’s filling station on route 66! Housed in an old Route 66 gas station and decorated with vintage gas pumps and old-fashioned Coke ads, our cafe is a fun place for kids and parents. We are prized for our on location smoked barbecue, we also offer something for everyone such as burgers, spicy wings, pulled-pork sandwiches, steaks, salads and mesquite-grilled ribs cooked on our outdoor patio.”

The menu also lists vegan fair, but being a “meatatarian” we can’t accurately comment on the quality of that fare.

Is Great BBQ Worth A Two and Half Hour Drive? At Cruiser’s Route 66 Café we feel it is! We hope you agree.

Location: 233 W Rte 66 Williams, AZ 86046 928-635-2445

How Dust Storms Affect Your Air Conditioner

Phoenix is known for its dust storms. When thunderstorms roll in, the wind can stir up dust, mold, and pollen that are not only detrimental to your allergies, but harmful to your air conditioner unit. Unfortunately, dust is not the only threat that Arizona provides for your HVAC system. Pollen counts can be high in Phoenix due to the plants that release pollen in the warm, sunny days that Arizona provides. Due to the threats of dust and high pollen counts, Phoenix HVAC units must be properly maintained. The pollen effect on HVAC systems shouldn't be ignored. This is bad news for those in Arizona with allergies and asthma. High pollen counts can reduce indoor air quality if you do not have a well maintained AC unit. Poorly maintained ducts and inefficient filters can open your home to an environment susceptible to bacteria and viruses. These are the most common ways that mold and other pollutants creep into your HVAC system and increase the harmful pollen effect on HVAC.

Poorly maintained ducts
Inefficient filters
Large dust and dirt build up
Dirty coils and drip pans
Improper air balance

It is vital to perform preventative AC and furnace maintenance in Phoenix to avoid costly repairs and unnecessary replacements. Actions as simple as changing your air filter can keep your home from mold and other pollen effect on HVAC systems that can have costly cures. Don’t wait for the odor of stuffy air to trigger your concerns to look into the maintenance of your air conditioning unit. Though some bacteria produce odors, many do not. You may have an issue in your cooling or heating system without even knowing. Pollen can affect your HVAC for months without your knowledge, so be proactive in the care and maintenance of your system.

To explore what services Aaron’s Mechanical Services can provide, visit our website to discover how we can help you start up, tune up, or administer your air conditioning maintenance needs. Call our offices 623-388-4436, we will come to you and solve your cooling Unit’s service needs. Though pollen and dust may be in the air outside that doesn't mean your indoor air quality should be compromised. Prevent the pollen effect on HVAC systems and make sure that your homes are safe and pollen-free.

Remembering the Fourth of July

Today is a major holiday celebrated by nearly all citizens of the United States.  We all know that we celebrate the day related to the beginnings of the Revolutionary War with England.

What follows is a more complete story of how we came to use the 4th of July as that date.

During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:

“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Adams's prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress.

Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed.

In a remarkable coincidence, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but another Founding Father who became a President, James Monroe, died on July 4, 1831, thus becoming the third President in a row who died on this memorable day. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872, and, so far, is the only President to have been born on Independence Day.
