Simple Money Saving Tips

Always close your draperies on the sunny side of your house to block the sun’s rays and reduce solar heat gain.

Consider using light colors to reflect heat and reduce cooling costs. So when it comes time to consider painting your home or replacing the roof shingles or tiles chose the lightest colors that fit your needs.

Plant deciduous trees (the ones that loose their leaves in the winter) to add great shade in summer and let the sun light through in the winter.

Plant small shrubbery near the foundation of your home to shade the lower half of outer walls. Place your plantings at least three feet away from the foundation and walls to prevent water damage.

Use oscillating stand or ceiling fans to circulate air and make you feel cooler at a higher temperature setting on your thermostat.

If possible do your typical moisture-producing chores in the early morning or at night when it’s cooler. This includes washing clothes or dishes, mopping floors and watering indoor plants.

Always think of Aaron’s Mechanical Services when you need service on your air conditioning or heating needs.

Brite Lites and Money Savings.

It seems by now everyone has heard of the new styles of light bulbs, Compact Fluorescent and LEDs.  While they cost more to buy upfront they save money in two ways.  Immediate savings as they use far less electricity than the old filament style bulbs and they last much longer so their cost per hour of use is much less as well.  Lets look at these two choices and see which might work best for you.

Compact Fluorescent.
A compact fluorescent lamp, is a fluorescent lamp designed to replace an incandescent lamp; some types fit into light fixtures formerly used for incandescent lamps. The lamps use a tube which is curved or folded to fit into the space of an incandescent bulb, and a compact electronic ballast in the base of the lamp.

Compared to general-service incandescent lamps giving the same amount of visible light, CFLs use one-fifth to one-third the electric power, and last eight to fifteen times longer. A CFL has a higher purchase price than an incandescent lamp, but can save over five times its purchase price in electricity costs over the lamp's lifetime.  Like all fluorescent lamps, CFLs contain mercury, which complicates their disposal. In many countries, governments have established recycling schemes for CFLs and glass generally.

CFLs radiate a spectral power distribution that is different from that of incandescent lamps. Improved phosphor formulations have improved the perceived color of the light emitted by CFLs, such that some sources rate the best "soft white" CFLs as subjectively similar in color to standard incandescent lamps.

LEDs
With the development of high-efficiency and high-power LEDs, it has become possible to use LEDs in lighting and illumination. Replacement light bulbs have been made, as well as dedicated fixtures and LED lamps. To encourage the shift to very high efficiency lighting, the US Department of Energy has created the L Prize competition. The Philips Lighting North America LED bulb won the first competition on August 3, 2011 after successfully completing 18 months of intensive field, lab, and product testing.
Philips began shipping the L Prize winning A lamp into the professional market through its lighting distributors early this year, although the company has endured many negative comments about the high price of the product. A broad launch to the residential market, at a slightly lower price is slated for green-oriented Earth Day on April 22. Moreover, there are under-publicized purchase incentives that are already available in the professional segment and more due for residential customers.

Indeed there has been considerable condemnation of the high price of the lamp, given that the original L Prize collateral mentioned a lamp in the $25 range. Online wholesaler bulbs.com posted the lamp for sale at a price of $59.99 back in early March.

There is already evidence of slightly lower prices for consumers online. Home Depot is already taking preorders at $49.97. Moreover, Philips said that it is filling the supply chain and stock is due on shelves at Home Depot and other major retailers by April 22.

Five Energy Saving Tips

Don't Block Refrigerator Vents
The air that comes into your fridge and freezer comes through a vent on the inside.  Make sure you don’t place food or items in front of those vents, as the appliance will use more electricity if you do.

Turn Off Your Dishwasher Drying Cycle
Turn off the dish drying function of your dishwasher cycle and boost your savings account by letting your dishes dry naturally.

Using Local Area Task Lighting
Table lamps will light just the space you are using, making them a much more efficient option than turning on all the numerous and larger overhead lights.

Never Run A Partial Dishwasher Load
If you have a full load then your dishwasher is more water and energy efficient, but if not, wash the few plates or mugs by hand.

Turn Off Unused Lights
Did Mom or Dad always remind you to turn off lights? It seems to be a habit  that is hard to remember.  It is one which can save you a fortune. Turing off the lights when you leave a room and when you go out makes financial sense, and should appeal to your common sense as well.

Remember Saving Energy means Saving Money.  Have an Energy Saving question or need help with your Air Conditioning please call Aaron’s Mechanical Services at 623 -388-4436.

AZ Places To Visit - Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium

Part of enjoying Arizona is all the great places to visit. One of our favorites is in the West Valley Area, the Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium.  They continue to expand and bring new exhibits for all of to visit.

Following the successful plan of the first three aquarium buildings, the latest Wildlife World Aquarium building will also have outdoor animal exhibits, including an indoor-outdoor pool with underwater viewing that will provide a permanent home for three adult small-clawed otters and a recent litter of pups temporarily on display in the Aquarium Predator Building.

Visitors to the Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium will enjoy the park's grand entrance complete with paved, lighted and always free parking. The entrance sits at the corner of Northern and Sarival Avenues, just 1/2 mile east of the intersection of State Route 303 and Northern in Litchfield Park. This two-story landmark has an inviting central breezeway with multiple ticket windows. Plus, the new gift shop located at the west end features terrestrial zoo animal items while the east gift shop specializes in aquatic animal merchandise.

The new indoor Aquarium and extended hours of operation has helped make Wildlife World a year round family-fun and dining destination. The largest structure in the complex, the Predator building, holds real sharks, stingrays you can touch and feed, eels and the rare albino alligator.

Located along the western edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area in Litchfield Park, the Wildlife World Zoo first opened its doors in 1984. With the opening of the Aquarium, Wildlife World has solidified its position as home to Arizona's largest collection of exotic animals with over 6000 animals representing more than 600 species. More than 500,000 people, including some 85,000 students at a significantly reduced admission, visit annually. As a privately owned and operated institution, Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium relies solely on gate attendance and retail sales to generate its operating and capital budgets. It receives zero public tax support, grants, or financial donations.

The Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium is located at 16501 W. Northern Ave., Litchfield Park, AZ 85340. They are open 365 days a year. Zoo exhibits are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aquarium exhibits are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Check their web site for current admission prices: http://www.wildlifeworld.com

Weather Stripping Saves Money

Now is the time to tune up your home and save money for our hot summer cooling season.  Air leaks around your doors can be very costly.  But weather stripping is easy to install and can be very effective in lower your electricity bill.

You can use weather stripping in your home to seal air leaks around movable joints, such as windows or doors.

A quick test is the “Dollar Bill Test”.  Open your door and place a dollar bill between the door and the door jam, close the door.  Tug on the dollar bill, if it slips out easily that opening would benefit from additional weather stripping.

Choose a type of weather stripping that will withstand the friction, weather, temperature changes, and wear and tear associated with its location. For example, when applied to a door bottom or threshold, weather stripping could drag on carpet or erode as a result of foot traffic. Weather stripping in a window sash must accommodate the sliding of panes—up and down, sideways, or out. The weather stripping you choose should seal well when the door or window is closed while allowing it to open freely.

Choose a product for each specific location. Felt and open-cell foams tend to be inexpensive, susceptible to weather, visible, and inefficient at blocking airflow. However, the ease of applying these materials may make them valuable in low-traffic areas. Vinyl, which is slightly more expensive, holds up well and resists moisture. Metals (bronze, copper, stainless steel, and aluminum) last for years and are affordable. Metal weather stripping can also provide a nice touch to older homes where vinyl might seem out of place.

The DIY network has great how-to-videos about weather stripping.  You can see some of these at http://www.diynetwork.com/remodeling/weather-stripping-tips/index.html

A Health Fair For You & The Environment

A Health Fair For You & The Environment called Be Green & Be Healthy, Green & Health Fair is held yearly and is sponsored by the City of Surprise, Arizona and Waste Management.

For 2012 the event is on April 21st and will be held at the Surprise Recreation Campus / Surprise Stadium at 15860 North Bullard Avenue.  The event runs from 8:00 Am until 1:00 PM.

There will be many Green Business, Health and Fitness Vendors.

This year at nearby Dream Catcher Park there will be a Free Shred-a-Thon Event.  Shredding sensitive documents is one way to reduce your risk of becoming an identity theft victim. Attend a free community shred event to keep your personal information out of the hands of crooks.

Most shred events permit individuals to bring up to two file boxes or three grocery bags of documents. American Shredding will shred any paper products, as long as there are no metal clips larger than wire paper clips on the paper. Electronics will be collected on site as well. The Shred-a-Thon will be held just East of Dream Catcher Park, off of Tierra Buena and Civic Center Plaza.

The location map for this years event is at http://www.surpriseaz.gov/images/pages/N2395/greenfairmap3-12.jpg

Save Money on Your Energy Bill

Here in Arizona there are three important aspects in saving money on your electric bill in the spring, summer and early fall.

First, make sure that your air conditioning unit is in top-notch shape. At a minimum you need to have a tune-up and check of your system to make sure it is running at its best.  You want it to run efficiently. That will save you money.

Second, You want to make sure your filters are clean and during the warm months you want to keep the filters clean. That will help your AC unit keep your house cool with the least work.

Third, consider what is the maximum temperature that you are comfortable with. Don’t spend money when you don’t have to. A programmable thermostat can help by allowing the time of day to be a zone of comfort. When no one is home the inside temperature can rise a bit and save on cooling costs. The program of the thermostat can be begin to cool the house more when people are set to come home.

Fans can be set to move air and that increase in airflow can make you feel more comfortable. In general moving the air with the use of ceiling fans or others can make a feeling that is equivalent to having a two or three degree drop in temperature.  Being able to raise your base temperature that two or three degrees can save hundreds of dollars over a year’s cooling.

Give Aaron’s Mechanical Services a call to schedule your spring AC tune-up and start your savings now.
