Will the Phoenix High Really be One Hundred Degrees Above Minnesota?

Normally on Thursday, this time of year (Winter), we would be writing about a new product design or heating unit that would save you money over an older less efficient unit.

The National Weather Service is predicting that the high, in the Phoenix Metro area, the high will be in the very high seventies to the low eighties.  It is very hard to write about heating here in the Valley of the Sun when it is going to be that warm and much of the rest of the nation is still in the deep freeze.

Yes, I know, we normally call our friends and family during January and kid them that we are barbequing when they are shoveling snow.  But, this storm has been deadly and it just isn’t a good time for levity.

So are you planning on doing a Super Bowl party this weekend? Or, have you been invited to one? Perhaps you are planning on spending time out at your local watering hole to watch the game with hundreds of other fans.

Is it fair to ask who do you want to win this year’s game, the Denver Broncos or the Seattle Seahawks? As this is written it seems that the current Las Vegas line gives a slight edge to the Seahawks.

Here in Phoenix Metro area this week also brings the Phoenix Open golf tournament and the Sahuaro State Kennel Club dog show for you non-sports fans.

AZ Central website lists at least twenty-eight things you can do or see this weekend.  I’ll bet if you work at it you will be able to find even more things you can do this weekend.

For a very different, but desert related theme here is an event you may (and is may) want to attend. With our mild winter, the rattlesnakes are out of hibernation. Join Ranger Amy and Ranger Mark of Sonoran Wildlife Services and learn to recognize their warning signs and what you should do if you find one in your yard. There will even be rattlers on display — but not to touch! This will be at the McDowell Mountain Regional Park 1-2pm on January 31st.

February 1st also brings us “Larry the Cable Guy” at Talking Stick Resort at 8:00pm. Blue Collar Comedy Tour’s multi-platinum recording comedian, Larry the Cable Guy, makes a special appearance at the Talking Stick Resort Ballroom on Saturday, February 1st. Come on out and “Git R’ Done” with the star of The History Channel’s, “Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy.” With multiple acting credits and seven comedy albums—three of which have been certified gold—comedy fans are in for a night of hee-larious laughs with Larry the Cable Guy!

When Was The Last Time You Had Your Heating System Serviced?

I spoke with a friend in Pennsylvania this morning. He mentioned that his furnace was running non-stop and it wasn’t getting the inside temperature up to sixty-eight degrees Fahrenheit. Of course it is well below zero back there.

Today, here in the Phoenix metro our high temperature is forecast to be seventy-four degrees. The Midwest, southeast and east all shivering with the highs below zero in many places.  Snow is falling through-out many area where ice and snow just aren’t expected or planned for.

I know your furnace or heating system isn’t running 24-7 here in the Valley of the Sun to keep your home warm and comfortable. But, if I may ask a question, when was the last time your heat-pump, HVAC or furnace was serviced?

Did you have to think about the answer? Then it has been too long since that unit was checked, tuned up or serviced.  That should be done before every heating season.  Those tune-ups not only save you money and keep your family safe they also extend the lifetime of your heating system.

You aren’t saving money by not having your furnace or heating system checked.

Generally, heating systems in the Phoenix metro area require little upkeep and maintenance. HVAC equipment today is mostly trouble-free and requires only periotic attention. However, you should have heating system maintenance performed on an annual basis to keep your system operating well and worry-free. When you have a qualified HVAC company, like Aaron’s Mechanical Services, perform heating system maintenance in the area, we will perform a series of inspections, along with some tune-up tasks. Such heating system maintenance will ensure that you get the most out of your heating system over the life of the unit.

Air conditioning and heating system maintenance is necessary to keep warranties valid. All HVAC system manufacturers require that air conditioning and heating equipment is regularly maintained by a qualified HVAC company.

Our knowledgeable staff is ready with the latest information about programs that you can take advantage of to save you money on new heating and cooling equipment for your home.

Call us today to discuss flexible financing options. Keep your system running in tip-top condition and stay comfortable all year around.

How will you benefit from regular annual service?

It’s generally true that the more often you have annual service performed, the more you’re likely to benefit from the service. But even if you’ve neglected to service your furnace for a few years, you can still get in on its benefits by starting regular service now.

If you are looking for a fast and fair company to work with for your Heating or HVAC repair or replacement needs?  Give Aaron’s Mechanical Services a call and let us help you get warmed up! Call 623-388-4436

Chicago Will Be Colder Than Barrow Alaska

Can I say it one more time?  I am so glad I live in the Phoenix Metro area.  While Barrow Alaska will be a cold twenty degrees Fahrenheit today, Chicago will be even colder at just one degree BELOW zero.

Yesterday evening and overnight your furnace or heating system may have run a couple of hours total to keep your house warm and cozy there are places in the Midwest where the furnaces is running constantly and not really able to keep the house warm at all.

Have you heard or read about propane shortage that is affecting some parts of the U.S.?

America’s chronic cold is creating a significant propane shortage across the Midwest — leading Wisconsin to become the latest state to declare an energy emergency in advance of more arctic air blasting eastward this week.

Freezing temperatures, snowfall and delayed flights are just some of what an arctic air mass has brought the country. Some 14 million Americans who rely on propane have been shelling out more and more to heat their homes while the strong demand has outpaced the already-low inventories, energy officials say.

Twenty-four states, including Ohio, Illinois and Alabama, have already declared energy emergencies — which helps to loosen transportation rules so that out-of-state truckers can drive longer hours to make needed propane deliveries.

In Wisconsin, wholesale propane cost an average of $2.26 per gallon on Jan. 20, up 35 percent since mid-December. Wisconsin residential prices averaged $2.30 per gallon on Jan. 20, up 13 percent from a month earlier. That means a person with a 500-gallon propane tank is suddenly paying $135 more to fill it than he or she did in December.  If you do the math that also means that the price to fully fill their 500 gallon propane tank is over $1,200 dollars.

Just to give you an idea how far south the deep freeze is moving, this morning the National Weather Service listed places as far south as Kentucky that will be below freezing (with wind chill) for the high temperature on Monday the 27th.

So for all of our friends here in the Valley of the Sun we want to let you know we are ready to help you with all of your heating needs.  We can help with your furnace, heat pump or any HVAC unit. We are as close as your phone. Just give us a quick call at 623-388-4436. Thinking heating think Aaron’s Mechanical Services.

A New Gas Furnace Is Your Best Bet

Gas is currently the most common heating fuel and most new central-heating systems use gas. How efficiently a furnace converts natural gas into heating energy is reflected in its annual fuel-utilization-efficiency (AFUE) rating, which is measured as a percentage. The higher the number, the more heat the furnace can wring from each therm of gas. Since efficient furnaces generate fewer emissions, environmental considerations might also influence your decision.

Furnaces have become more energy-efficient over the years. A gas furnace made in the early 1970s typically has an AFUE of about 65 percent. The lowest efficiency allowed by law for new gas furnaces is 78 percent, and some new models achieve 97 percent a near total efficiency.

The price of a furnace generally rises in step with its fuel efficiency. A furnace with a 90 percent AFUE might cost $1,000 more than a similar size unit with an 80 percent AFUE. But you can often recoup that additional cost through lower fuel bills over the life of the furnace, especially in regions such as the Northeast and Midwest, where winters can be harsh. How quickly you recover the investment depends on more than just AFUE. The electricity to run furnaces with different AFUEs can vary significantly. The climate where you live, how well your home is insulated, and your local gas and electricity rates also affect payback times.

As you decide, insist that the contractor select models in a range of efficiencies and calculate the annual estimated operating cost of each model you're considering, rather than simply estimating it. The contractor can complete those calculations by plugging information on each unit's AFUE and electrical consumption, local utility rates, and characteristics of your home into one of several computer programs designed to easily calculate estimates. Make sure that the quotes also include the cost of any changes to venting required by any appliances in the home.

You can make your home more energy-efficient in several ways. Turn down the thermostat in winter; just two degrees cooler will save you money and reduce emissions by about 6 percent. You might not even feel the difference, especially at night or when you're out of the house (a programmable thermostat can help here). Draw the curtains at night to block the chill from a cold window. Keep the windows covered on sunny days during the summer, and uncover them on sunny days during the winter to benefit from some free solar heating. Reduce heat loss from ducts by sealing leaks and, where feasible, insulating ducts.

If you have to replace your furnace, you'll be glad to hear that today's more-efficient gas furnaces can save you around $17 for every $100 you spend on fuel compared with older models. They are also, on average, less likely to need repairs.

Aaron’s Mechanical Services wants you to stay comfortable all year round.  If your furnace, heating system or HVAC unit needs service or replacement please think of us and call at 623-388-4436 and we will come to you and solve your Heating Unit service needs.

Cool Arizona Places: Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley

You might be surprised to know that you can ski in Tucson, Arizona! Mt. Lemmon is in the Catalina Mountains and is the southernmost ski resort in the United States. They have one ski lift and eighteen ski trails.

Few people think of snow and skiing when they think of Tucson. Cactus, desert, and diamondback rattlesnakes more readily come to mind.

The Santa Catalina Ranger District, however, is home to the southernmost ski area in the United States, which is perched near the 9,157 foot summit of Mt. Lemmon. Ski runs are usually open from mid-December to early April, depending on winter weather and snowfall.

Located just an hour's drive from the sun-drenched resorts of Tucson, area visitors can golf and swim in Tucson, then downhill ski at Ski Valley, all in the same day. Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley offers ski equipment rentals, instruction, the Iron Door Restaurant, a snack bar, and gift shop.

Overnight accommodations are available in the nearby village of Summerhaven. The chair lift is in operation all year round, taking visitors to a high overlook from which they can enjoy views of the Santa Catalinas, the city of Tucson, the San Pedro Valley, the Reef of Rocks, and the distant mountains near Globe and Phoenix.

These scenic views, combined with the many trails and overlooks in the area, and the Iron Door Restaurant make this a popular place to visit in any season. The highway is paved and suitable for passenger vehicles.

Following snowstorms, the road may be closed temporarily; snow tires, chains or 4WD may be required. For obtaining the most current road conditions, please call the Pima County Sheriff's 24 hour Road Condition Hotline 520-547-7510 (year round).

From the Phoenix Metro area take 1-10 East to exit 256 and follow the signs to Mt. Lemmon – about 2½ hours drive.

Are You Glad You Live In The Phoenix Metro Area?

Here we are going into the third week of 2014 and there are places in Minnesota and the Midwest where the low this morning was in the minus 15 range.  That makes our 45 degrees Fahrenheit seem like summer to them, I’m sure.

Worse for the Midwest and East is that they have at least three more days of this frigid weather temps and snowfall.

Yes, I know your furnace or heating system was running this morning when you got up.  But if it were as cold as Minnesota it would have run full blast all night trying to keep you warm and cozy.

It gets so cold back there that they have to run an electric heater to warm their car engine so they will start in the morning.

When was the last time you had to figure in time to scrape your car windows free of frost and ice so you could see enough to drive to work?

As you drive to work in the Valley of the Sun you don’t have to worry about Black Ice or trying to stop on snow-covered ice.

When was the last time you saw a car with the lower sections of the body rusted out from the salt that helped melt the ice on the roadways?

Have you called family and friends back east so you could tell them you were barbequing this evening while they are hoping that the sun melts the snow off the walk?

Do you hope for a cooler evening so you can use your fireplace for ambiance rather than the heat it produces?

Would you rather hike the surrounding mountains for exercise rather than bundling up and have to shovel the walks and driveway?

Let's face it.  We all love this time of year as the 70 degree days makes us the envy of the nation for a few months.  Can you think of even additional reasons to love Winter in Phoenix beyond the obvious great weather?

Aaron’s Mechanical Services has been serving the Valley of the Sun and the Phoenix Metro area since 1994.  Let us help your family with your heating needs.

Will We See Record January 2014 Highs?

I just saw that the National Weather Service has some forecasts highs for the end of January in the eighties.  Now that is a pretty warm start for 2014.  Are those highs above, at or near records?

The record high temperature for January in Phoenix AZ is eighty-eight degrees in 1971.  It looks like that record will be safe. But we are sure well above the average highs of sixty-sevenish.

Since we are looking at records, the record low temperature in the Phoenix Metro area for January is a very cold sixteen degrees.  That was recorded in 1913.  It is unlikely that we will ever see that level of lows since the urban heat island keeps our nights much warmer than in the past years.

Our nighttime lows are still going to run in the mid-forties and you need some morning heat to keep your home warm and comfortable. If you need help or repairs with your heating equipment we hope that you will think of calling Aaron’s Mechanical Services first.  That phone call is 623-388-4436. Think of Aaron’s as being as close and handy as your pocket or purse.  We are your fast and friendly heating (and cooling) company.

Did you Know?

January and February are the peak months for the flu.

Pam cooking spray on your snow shovel makes snow removal easier… Oh, wait we don’t have that white stuff here in the Valley of the Sun.

Here in Arizona we run an anti-freeze mixture (about 50 / 50) in our cars cooling systems to help prevent boil over in the summer… go figure.

Few places (if any) in the U.S.A. offer better year around weather to ride a motorcycle. OK, the lower California cost area is just as good.

The Trust for Public Land this week released their City Park Facts. The report discloses a variety of public park-related data from America's 100 largest cities. As USA Today has already noted, the fastest-growing park type in the country is now dog parks:

Portland OR, Norfolk VA and Las Vegas were the top three for puppy parks. The Phoenix area didn’t make the top ten.  The strange thing is we didn’t make the top ten when it came to swimming pools either. Tucson to the south of us did make the top ten for pools.

Scottsdale made the top ten public baseball diamonds coming in at number six.

Why A New Furnace Can Save You Money

Improvements in furnaces have increased dramatically over the past thirty years. Manufacturers have made great strides in their new products.

Efficiency
Older furnaces installed in Maricopa county from the 1970's and 1980's had an AFUE of about 60%. This figure indicates how efficiently your furnace uses the fuel that it consumes, the higher the number, the better. Today's government mandated minimum is 78.5% and some furnaces have efficiency ratings as high as 96% AFUE.

Safety
Today's furnaces are built to operate more safely. There are numerous safety devices that prevent the equipment from coming on unless all components are functioning normally. There must be adequate air flow across the heat exchanger, the pilot must be lit, and all service access panels must be securely in place before power and gas will be supplied to the unit.

Comfort
One innovative new feature available on furnaces is two-stage heat, which enables the furnace to change its output depending on demand from the thermostat. No longer are systems limited to one output level.

When heat is replaced in the house as evenly as it is lost (the temperature remains constant without big temperature swings) you are provided with optimum comfort. Additionally, when the furnace operates on "low", the fan motor will also run at a slower speed, ensuring warm delivery temperatures and quieter operation.

Another improvement is the variable speed fan motor. These motors perform under a wide variety of output requirements, depending on what the furnace is being tasked to do, high-fire, low-fire, cooling or to simply circulate air through the living space. They also use about 25% less electricity than traditional PSC fan motors.

A perfect example of these advances are found in the Carrier Infinity™ 96 Gas Furnace with its 96.6% AFUE rating and the QuiTech™ noise reduction Two-stage heating and Variable speed fan.  This unit will save hundreds in energy related costs.  A perfect retro fit or used in your new construction.

How Mild Will January 2014 Be In Phoenix Arizona?

It looks like the balance of January will have our lows in the low forties and it will reach sixty degrees by noonish.  For most of the country they can only wish they had our mild temperatures. Here we are thinking that is winter time and we are really cold.

I don’t know about you but I like to wake up to a warm cozy home. And forty degrees feels mighty cold when I climb out of bed. So my furnace better be doing its job. Even if my heating system only runs a few hours in the morning and evening and a bit overnight I don’t want to leave more money with SRP, APS or Southwest Gas than I have to. That means I also want the furnace to do its job while sending as little of my money as possible.

Here at Aaron’s Mechanical Services we can do a tune-up, repair or replacement of your furnace, heating system or HVAC unit and do just that – keep you warm and cozy without spending any more money than possible.

We have been serving the Valley of the Sun and the Phoenix Metro area since 1994.  Let us help your family with your heating needs.

Did You Know?

We have all heard that no two snowflakes are alike. Did you know a scientist took 400,000 samples to prove it?

All snowflakes have 6 sides.

Icicles form most often on the south side of buildings.

The record for the most snow angels at one time was set in Ontario Canada in 2004 when a couple of schools joined to create 15,851 snow angels.

If it gets cold enough, single digits or below, ice crystals can form and snow can fall from clear skies.

Antarctica set the record for the world’s coldest temperature at minus 129 degrees Fahrenheit.

The tallest snowman was 113 feet 7 inches tall. Named Angus and made in Bethel Maine in 1999.

Nine years later in 2008 this same town created the world's tallest snowwoman. The snowwoman stood 122 feet 1 inch tall.

What to Expect From January 2014 Weather

This years Old Farmer’s Almanac makes the forecast that this year January’s temperature will be two degrees Fahrenheit above average. While that sounds pretty good, I mean two above is much better than two degrees below average, does that mean it is time to put away the sweaters or turn off the heat? I don’t think so!

This morning, here in the Phoenix Metro area, the overnight low reached the thirties.  Depending on where you live here in the valley it was between thirty-four and thirty-eight degrees.  That is still cold enough to require an efficient heating system or furnace to keep your home warm, cozy and comfortable.

So if the Old Farmer’s Almanac is accurate that means it could have been as low as thirty-two degrees this morning rather than the thirty-four degrees.  Either temperature is cold enough for me.  How about you?

Just in case you want to plan ahead the Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting that overall February will be an average of two degrees Fahrenheit below average. Seems like we just can’t win when it comes to being warmer.

Here is the Old Farmer’s Almanac Annual Weather Summary for the period November 2013 to October 2014.

Winter will be colder and drier than normal, although snowfall will be above normal in most of the region. The coldest periods will be in early and mid-December and in early to mid-February. The snowiest periods will be in early and mid-December, and in early and mid-February.

April and May will be drier and much warmer than normal.

Summer will be hotter and rainier than normal, with the hottest periods in early June, early to mid-July, and early to mid-August.

Old Farmer’s Almanac History

The Old Farmer's Almanac is North America's most popular reference guide and oldest continuously published periodical.  Its history is as rich and diverse as the Almanac itself.

Under the guiding hand of its first editor, Robert B. Thomas, the premiere issue of The Old Farmer's Almanac was published in 1792 during George Washington's first term as president. Although many other almanacs were being published at that time, Thomas's upstart almanac became an immediate success. In fact, by the second year, circulation had tripled from 3,000 to 9,000. Back then, the Almanac cost only six pence (about nine cents).

Home Heating and the 2014 CES Show

The 2014 Consumer Electronics Show has given us new information about many of the items for home heating and automation.  A new system from Lowes is making news.

Mooresville-based Lowe’s Inc. wants to help you talk with your house – literally.

The company hopes the latest wave of its Iris home automation products will lure consumers, as Lowe’s angles for a share of the growing market for systems that hook everyday appliances to the Internet.

Lowe’s executives were in Las Vegas this week for the annual Consumer Electronics Show, demonstrating the newest Iris products. A voice control unit called iVee lets you control functions such as your thermostat with a spoken command: “Turn the heat up to 70.”

Other Lowe’s products on display at the show: a water valve that can shut off automatically if it detects a leak, and smart energy meters to view and manage your power usage.

As wireless Internet connections for everything from refrigerators to light switches become cheaper and more widespread, analysts estimate the market for home automation systems will grow at a brisk 47 percent consolidated annual rate through 2018.

Lowe’s faces a crowded field with a seemingly ever-growing list of competitors. Companies such as CPI Security and Time Warner Cable already have millions of subscribers to whom they’re trying to sell home automation services. Other retailers offer home automation devices. And a variety of free apps and high-end home automation professionals want their share of the market.

The presence of a decades-old home improvement retailer at the cutting-edge show for new consumer devices shows the degree to which technology pushes into more areas of everyday life. Although home automation has been around for decades, most previous systems either cost tens of thousands of dollars or required users savvy enough to install and operate high-tech equipment.

Iris was first rolled out in July 2012. Lowes offers about 40 Iris-connected products in partnership with companies such as Honeywell, Schlage and Whirlpool.

Despite the Jetson’s television show-like sound of many of the Iris functions – Lock your door with your voice! – experts say there are solid reasons to connect your home. Chief among them, aside from security, is saving energy and therefore money.

How Cold Will Phoenix Get?

Here in the Valley of the Sun the National Weather Service says we can expect our night time low on Tuesday January the 7th to be 38 degrees Fahrenheit or so.

Here in the Phoenix Metro area we think of that as cold weather.  We can expect summer highs to be well over 110 degrees.  So a temperature that is more than seventy degrees lower to feel very cold.  During our winter you need an efficient and well running heating system to keep you warm and that is where Aaron’s Mechanical Services can help.

Give us a call so we can come an look over and tune up your furnace, heat pump or HVAC unit ao your home can stay warm and comfortable.  Furnace repair is our middle name, well at least it is in the winter time.

If you have friends or family in the Midwest or eastern part of the US you have been seeing the bitter cold that the “Polar Vortex” shift has brought to them.

Here are some cold weather facts that they may be facing;

North Dakota - 50 degrees below zero (with wind chill added) Exposed flesh can freeze in as little as five minutes…

Chicago – Schools and many Public Offices are going to be closed.as temperatures drop well below zero…

Atlanta – Temperatures plunged to 6 degrees above zero in Atlanta and 6 degrees below zero at a remote weather station in the north Georgia Mountains as the coldest air in years settled over the state. It was still well below freezing across Southeast Georgia where lows were mostly around 20 degrees at dawn.

New York's Central Park - has never been this cold -- on this date.

How cold is it? An escaped jail inmate turned himself in so he could warm up!

You could warm up in Siberia! - Technically, that's true. That's because Siberia is huge. As temperatures dropped to unbelievable lows in much of U.S., it did get colder than the Russian city of Tobolsk in Siberia. But when you think of Siberia, you probably imagine the more brutal, bitter, biting cold of a place like Dzalinda, where temperatures have been hanging out at about minus 55 degrees Monday and Tuesday. Amazingly, with wind chill, parts of the northern U.S. felt that low Tuesday.

50 Below – Now You Know Why I Live In Arizona

Have you read that this current winter storm “Polar Vortex” is bringing temperatures to the upper Midwest that will dip to fifty degrees below zero (that is Fahrenheit).  Yes, that may well be with a wind chill factor figured in.  But any time you hear or read the term “below zero” you know it is cold, very cold.

Have seen the photos of cars frozen to the ground, highways clogged with stranded motorists, people wearing many layers of clothing or snow blowers and ice trucks try to stay ahead of the weather.  BRRRR –

Now you know why I live in the Phoenix Metro area – you don’t have to shovel sunshine.

With daytime highs in the upper sixties it is a great time to live here.  However our night-time lows are still in the very low forties to the mid-thirties means you need a good heating system to stay comfortable.

More than just a good heating system you need one that is running correctly, efficiently to keep your power bills under control.  None of us want to donate money to APS, SRP or Southwest Gas.  “Waste Not Wont Not” is the old saying.

Having your heating system checked and a good tune could save you hundreds of dollars during our winter heating season. Aaron’s Mechanical Services is the place to call to make sure your heating system, furnace or HVAC unit isn’t wasting your hard earned money. We are just a quick phone call away at 623-388-4436.

Our night-time lows won’t be anywhere near the 10 to 20 degrees much of the nation will see tonight you still need to add cozy warmth to your home so that getting up on Tuesday won’t mean freezing feet and seeing your breath indoors.  With many nights being No Burn Nights throwing a log on the fire (even if you have a fireplace) isn’t going to be an option.

Here a few morning lows forecast for other parts of the nation on Tuesday January 7th.

Fargo North Dakota – minus 22 degrees

Chicago IL – minus 12 degrees

Cleveland OH – snow and minus 7 degrees

Atlanta GA – minus 1 degree

New York NY – 9 degrees

A Look at Passive Solar in 2014

For 2014 people are thinking about changes and new ideas like can make their life better.  Using natural resources are thought to both be better for the planet and to save money in the long run.

Arizona is a land of extremes and variation. Arizonans have adapted to, and adopted the natural conditions and resources of Arizona sites and climate to create habitations that are energy efficient and resource appropriate. Throughout Arizona there are a variety of actions that have been and are continuing to be taken by Arizonans who are incorporating the elements of nature - the sun, wind, earth, and water, simply and directly to meet their needs. These actions are the basis of Living With the Sun - Arizona Style.

Garrett Residence - Scottsdale, Arizona

This passive and active systems residence has functioned through 20 years of Arizona dessert summers and winters. Combining passive solar techniques of solar orientation, elongated building form along the west/east axis, earth integration (a below grade living space), thermal mass, thermal screening, indigenous landscape for summer heat mitigation, and cross ventilation, with active solar systems for hot water heating, photovoltaic electric generation to power elements of the house and yard lights, solar pool heating the house also contains energy efficient appliances and fixtures.

Edwards Residence Scottsdale, Arizona

This dessert straw bale residence is part of the City of Scottsdale’s Green Building Program. Living With the Sun strategies include orientation, highly insulated building shell (straw bale construction, highly insulated roof, energy efficient windows, shelf shading structure ( window shading wing walls), thermal mass plenum floors for heating and cooling, a cool tower (gravity driven evaporative cooling system), and cross ventilation cooling. Heating is achieved by direct gain south windows, floor thermal mass and an energy efficient fireplace.

Straw Bale Residence - Tempe, Arizona

This compact and energy efficient structure is the first straw bale construction in Tempe. The highly insulating walls of mud plastered straw bale load bearing walls, coupled with the thermal mass of the stone fireplace and exposed concrete floors provide a condition where a minimum of mechanical energy is required for heating or cooling. The barrier of the walls prevent heat flow from or to the outside, and the thermal mass retains both warmth and “coolth” to maintain comfort with only a 3 degree temperature swing during the day. High insulative values of the walls and the roof (r-50+) mitigate the flow of heat and assure a stable environment which results in less mechanical cooling and heating operations.
