How Cold Will The Phoenix Metro Area Be For The Big Game?

I know that many folks across the country never consider that the Phoenix Metro Area is ever cold. Some folks think that sixty degrees isn’t even low enough to call it cool.

The average temperature for the Valley of the Sun on February first is sixty-six degrees Fahrenheit.  The National Weather Service is predicting this Sunday February first will be seventy-one degrees as the high.

Since the University of Phoenix Stadium has a roof and wonderful climate control (think HVAC) there was never a weather concern. Some of this week’s and this weekend’s events and activities are so lucky to have a roof and a heating system since we have been seeing rain on Thursday January 29th already.

The National Weather Service is calling for rain on Friday and Saturday as well. The highs on Friday and Saturday are predicted to be in the mid-sixties.

It looks like all of the major airline hubs will be snow free so the thousands (and thousands) of inbound visitors we have little problems. Those who haven’t planned well enough may have trouble finding rooms anywhere near the stadium and rental cars are showing all sold with most rental companies.

From what I understand the Patriots just missed being caught on the ground by the snowmegedon from the first of this week.

Have you got all of your planning done for your big Sunday party?  Some items are getting to be in a bit of a short supply at some local markets and grocery stores.  Rumors of a chicken wing shortage cannot be confirmed.

Have you seen the sales on large flat screen Televisions at the local big box and electronics re-sellers? What sixty inches isn’t big enough all of a sudden? Do you know that a flat screen TV uses much less electricity than the old picture tube models? They produce a lot less heat as well and will save on cooling costs during the summer.  Just saying, in case you need a few more reasons to justify a new flat screen set.

Can you imagine what Sky Harbor International Airport will be like for Monday and Tuesday next week as the hordes fly-out?

Are you looking for fast and fair Heating Repair? Parts of the region will see blizzard conditions and more than 2 feet of snow and thousands of flights cancel or disrupted.

At least 28 million people are under the blizzard warnings. An additional 11 million people are under winter storm warnings, mostly in areas adjacent to the blizzard warning zone.

By far, the heaviest snowfall amounts from Juno are expected from eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey to New England. As shown on the forecast map, here is what can be expected in the Northeast:

Aaron’s Mechanical Services - Rainy Days and Mondays

The National Weather Service is predicting a 60% chance of rain this Monday here in the Valley of the Sun. For January that is fairly normal weather for the Phoenix Metro Area. It may be making the folks who are planning on attending many of the events that are scattered all over the valley ahead of this weekend’s Super Bowl mega event.

It could be worse and is for the northeast where the National Weather Service is predicting a Historic Blizzard for the northeast.  Up to twenty inches of snow (some are predicting a worse case scenario of more than 36 inches) from New Jersey northward to the state of Maine. This is a real nor’easter storm.

Travel is upset with 5,200 flights canceled through Tuesday. How many folks that were headed to Sky Harbor International airport scrambling to make other plans to get to the big game this weekend? With thousand dollar tickets and thousand dollar hotel rooms on the line they may have to start driving now to get here so they don’t miss out.

The state of Connecticut has closed many roads and advised that no travel should be attempted. Wow, can’t fly and can’t drive. Now people know why many folks move to warm climates for the winter months.

Speaking of warm, how is your furnace doing, is your heating system keeping your home warm and toasty? If not a quick call to Aaron’s Mechanical Services at 623-388-4436 can get us on the way to tune-up, fix or replace a pesky problem plagued heating system. Furnace, heat pump or HVAC we can handle your problems and provide the right solutions.

Watching this historic storm on television is much better than being caught up in it. We sure hope everyone gets through this storm without any major problems.

If you miss a flight due to weather what happens to your non-refundable, non-cancelable ticket for that canceled flight? Who gets bumped on Wednesday when the airports re-open?  Does the folks who were storm affected get priority over the folks with tickets for Wednesday?  Would you want to be an airport gate agent in the New York area for the next few days as they try to sort out these storm issues?

Promise you won’t call your friends in the northeast telling them about your barbequing this evening, that would be rubbing salt in the wound with this big storm.  Of course if they call you in July and August asking if you need help getting unstuck out of the asphalt parking lot then feel free to text them a photo of the food on the grill and our sunset.

Gasoline Prices Falling – What Of Natural Gas Costs?

We have noticed that the price at the pump has fallen from $3.40 plus to under $1.80 in just a few months.  Can I say that is a very welcome change to see the need for a bank loan to fill your tank go away. But for many the use of Natural Gas for heating may just be a different story.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported the morning of January 22nd, 2015 that U.S. natural gas stocks decreased by 216 billion cubic feet for the week ending January 16, compared with an expected decrease of around 236 billion cubic feet anticipated by analysts. The five-year average draw is 176 billion cubic feet, and during the same period last year the draw was 133 billion cubic feet.

Natural gas futures for February delivery traded down just about 2% in advance of the EIA’s report, at around $2.90 per million BTUs, and fell more than five cents immediately following the report. Natural gas futures have tumbled from a high of around $3.35 per million BTUs since last week. The 52-week low for natural gas futures is $2.78.

The weather forecast for the rest of this week and into next week calls for more winter-like temperatures across most of the country, with some colder air at times pushing into the southeastern United States. Temperatures west of the Rockies are expected to be warmer than normal. All this adds up to more moderate demand for natural gas this week, roughly the same as demand was a week ago.

Stockpiles are about 8.2% above their levels of a year ago and about 5.5% below the five-year average. The relatively milder weather so far in the heating season has curtailed stockpile drawdowns, compared with last year’s much colder weather.

The EIA reported that U.S. working stocks of natural gas totaled 2.64 trillion cubic feet, about 153 billion cubic feet below the five-year average of 2.79 trillion cubic feet and 199 billion cubic feet above last year’s total for the same period. Working gas in storage totaled 2.44 trillion cubic feet for the same period a year ago.

EIA projects that U.S. total natural gas consumption will increase to an average of 73.8 Bcf/d in 2015 and 74.8 Bcf/d in 2016, compared with an estimated 73.6 Bcf/d in 2014. Growth is largely driven by the industrial and electric power sectors, while residential and commercial consumption is projected to decline in 2015, then remain flat in 2016. Natural gas consumption in the power sector is expected to average 23.0 Bcf/d in 2015, a 3.2% increase compared with 2014, and it is expected to grow by 1.8% to 23.4 Bcf/d in 2016. Industrial sector consumption increases by 4.5% and 2.1% in 2015 and 2016, respectively, as new industrial projects come online, particularly in the fertilizer and chemicals sectors.

Cool Arizona Places: Visit Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley

This coming weekend would be a great time to get in some skiing before the big football game on February 1st. Just over two hours south of the Phoenix Metro area is Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley. Yes, you can go from our desert winter climate in the seventies and be skiing.

During World War II, a group of skiers made up of Lowell Thomas, a noted journalist and adventurer, a local forest ranger, and many Davis Monthan serviceman which included Thomas’ son, later a Governor of Alaska, and Art Devlin, a future Olympic ski jumper and Television commentator, formed the Sahuaro Ski Club.

The well-known cartoonist, Paul Webb, created a patch and membership certificates for the club showing a skier wrapped around a saguaro cactus. Thomas sent honorary memberships to dozens of friends, famous personalities around the world, making membership a tongue in cheek must. A ski gala was held that first year at the Arizona Inn with many of Thomas’ friends in attendance.

A Forest Service lease was obtained, an old model “A” with its tires removed propelled a rope tow and Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley had its beginning.

They have two places to eat the Grub Stake and the Iron Door Restaurant.

The Grub Stake is our patio cafe open on weekends during the ski season and select weekends throughout the summer. Serving up hamburgers, hot dogs and bowls of steaming hot chili The Grub Stake is the perfect spot to warm up and enjoy the views the ski area has to offer while sitting slope side.

The “Iron Door Restaurant” serves a wide variety of salads, sandwiches, homemade soups and featuring our famous chili and cornbread. Whether you decide on a hearty lunch or just a salad or slice of pie, you will be treated to the most pleasant surroundings in which to enjoy your purchase, indoors in front of our floor to ceiling stone fireplace or outdoors on the patio with the flowers, trees and humming birds.

Skiing features 21 runs and 3 lifts.  The longest run is 8,500 feet.

Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley Website: http://www.skithelemmon.com/

Location: 10300 Ski Run Rd. Mt. Lemmon, AZ 85619 (520) 576-1321

The highway is frequently closed for a day or so following substantial snowfalls until plows can clear the road. Restrictions limiting travel to vehicles with chains or four-wheel-drive above certain elevations may also be in effect during these times.

Planning For The Big Football Weekend. Is Furnace Ready?

With Glendale hosting the Big Game on February 1st at the University of Phoenix Stadium many of the local Football Fans are planning to celebrate at home.

How many people do you expect for the Super Bowl Party? You are doing lots of planning for snacks and meals. You may even be planning to buy a new and even bigger Television for the “Party.”

Are you planning decorations and party platters to make sure you have that special festive atmosphere?  Are you stocking up on lots of libations? Will you be wearing your lucky sweatshirt or socks? What team will you be rooting for? Or do you think of the famous quote from the movie Grease?

The weather forecasters are trying to figure out how the weather will be that weekend and it looks like it could go either way. Normally (historically) that time of year is rain free here in the Valley of the Sun.

But, are you planning on needing your furnace or HVAC system to be running at its best? Yes, that is right you just could need to heat your house at least parts of the big day (morning and or night) and is your heating system ready? Having your house be too cool would sure put a damper on your party and celebrations.

We sure don’t mean to add to your To Do list, but if you have been putting off having your safety furnace inspection and tune-up done… do we need to remind you about Murphy’s Law? You know that Murphy’s Law will bite you every time it can… every chance it gets.  There is still time to have Aaron’s Mechanical Services make sure your furnace is also ready for the big day.

Are partying on the patio? Have you rented the big propane heaters yet? The Tiki Torches don’t provide much heat (and make sure you use the correct fuel in them). You could add a fire pit and all these work great outdoors but sure CAN’T be used indoors so can we ask again is your furnace ready for the big game and the big party?

At the last minute you can have the pizza place deliver more food but at the last minute it may be too late to get your furnace running right. Did I mention we are available for 24/7 emergency service? That phone number is 623-388-4436. Can you turn the TV so I can watch it while I am working on your furnace? OK, just kidding!

Furnaces can be quite unpredictable. Unfortunately, you never know when your home unit may go out of service. For that reason, Aaron’s Mechanical Services proudly offers emergency furnace repair and emergency furnace maintenance around the clock every day of the year. Our HVAC technicians are on call and ready to go whenever you need. Furnaces don't run on a schedule, but we do!

Are you looking for fast and fair Heating Repair? Aaron’s Mechanical Services wants you to stay comfortable all year round.  Most important we want you to spend the least amount of money possible while you stay comfortable. If your Heating system or HVAC unit needs service or replacement please think of us and call at 623-388-4436 and we will come to you and solve your Heating System service needs.

The Landmark for Peace Memorial

The Landmark for Peace is a memorial sculpture at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park on the north side of Indianapolis that honors the contributions of the slain leaders Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. The memorial, which features King and Kennedy reaching out to each other, was designed and executed by Indiana artist Greg Perry. The bronze portraits were created by Indianapolis sculptor Daniel Edwards.

On April 4, 1968, Robert Kennedy flew to Indianapolis for a planned inner-city rally promoting his presidential campaign, and was informed upon landing about King's assassination. Kennedy was told that riots had broken out in other cities and was advised not to make the speech, but he proceeded to address the gathered crowd at 17th and Broadway, near the site where the memorial now stands. Instead of a campaign stump speech, he delivered a five-minute improvised statement informing the crowd of King's death and urging racial reconciliation. No riots took place in Indianapolis, a fact many attribute to the effect of Kennedy's speech.

The idea to create the Landmark for Peace was originally suggested by Indiana Democratic politico Larry Conrad. Before his death Conrad befriended Steve Mannheimer, an Indianapolis Star art critic and Herron School of Art professor. They once spoke at length about the need to commemorate the events of April 4, 1968, and Robert Kennedy's speech to a crowd gathered near the corner of 17th and Broadway streets in Indianapolis. At the time Conrad was an executive with the Simon Property Group, the Indianapolis-based shopping mall developers, and a close friend of Herb Simon and his wife Diane, who had been a worker in RFK's campaign at the time of his speech. Conrad suggested that should a memorial be created, the Simon family would offer its support.

In 1994 Donnie Walsh, president and CEO of the Indiana Pacers, owned by the Simon brothers, decided to start the Pacers Foundation to support worthy community initiatives. Walsh discussed his plans with Mannheimer, who recounted to Walsh the earlier conversation with Conrad. Walsh immediately seized on the idea of a memorial as an ideal project to launch the Foundation and asked Mannheimer to work with Pacers executive Kathryn Jordan on the project. Together Mannheimer and Jordan developed a plan to hold a national design competition to create a memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. The Pacers and the Pacers Foundation led community fundraising efforts for the project; beginning with Diane Simon donating $30,000 to the project.

Jurors for the competition included Bret Waller, director of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and Harry Robinson, professor of architecture at Howard University. From a national field of over 50 entries, the jury selected the proposal by designer Greg Perry, a 33-year-old artist from Franklin, Indiana. Perry's design featured two half-figures, one of King, the other of Kennedy, emerging from solid walls flanking a pathway to reach toward each other. It was an inspired design that captured the historical importance of these two great Americans and powerfully expressed the spirit of reconciliation and the striving for peace people still found in the story of their lives—and deaths. Before the actual construction of the memorial began, a ceremonial groundbreaking was held on May 14, 1994. This event attracted President Bill Clinton, Senator Ted Kennedy, RFK's widow Ethel Kennedy, two sons of Dr. King, Dexter Scott King and Martin Luther King, III, as well as other Indiana and national dignitaries.

Investigating The Latest In Heating Technology

Is it time to consider replacing your furnace? If you're looking for a new furnace while it is still cold in the Phoenix Metro area, there are some recent advancements in furnace technology you should consider.

Purchasing the most efficient and advanced heating system you can afford offers a variety of benefits, including the utmost in home comfort and the greatest energy savings over the lifetime of your furnace. If you have questions about the right furnace system for your home, your Aaron’s Mechanical Services expert has the exactly tailored answers you need to make the choice that is best for your family needs.

Saving Energy will mean Saving Money!

Hybrid heating systems, like hybrid cars, are designed to take advantage of more than one heat source to gain maximum efficiency during the heating season. A hybrid furnace system utilizes a traditional gas or oil furnace coupled with a heat pump to provide efficient heating at any temperature. When temperatures are mild, the electric heat pump delivers energy-efficient heating for your home without activating the furnace, which is more expensive and less efficient to run. As the temperature dips below the range in which the heat pump is most efficient, your traditional furnace system will take over to deliver the heat you need. Additionally, it's possible to use a heat pump for cooling as well, meaning you may be able to completely replace your air conditioning system when you upgrade to a hybrid heating system.

HVAC

You may hear the term "HVAC" when researching your new system. The acronym stands for Heating,
Ventilation and Air Conditioning — the three functions of a home system. They control air temperature, humidity, and the quality of the air in your home.

Furnace

A furnace works to keep a home warm in the winter and plays a critical part in the operation of an air conditioning system. Furnaces produce heat through the combustion of natural gas in the furnace's burner. The heat produced from this process then passes through a heat exchanger. Air from your home's return air ducts is blown over the heat exchanger, thus warming the air. The furnace's blower then blows the warmed air into the duct work, which carries and disperses the warmed air throughout the home. During warmer months, the blower inside a furnace continues to circulate return air throughout the home, only this time, the return air has been cooled by being blown over the indoor coil portion of the home's split-system air conditioning system. The evaporator coil is typically installed downstream of the furnace.

Heat Pump

Using electricity as its energy source, heat pumps are used for either the heating or cooling of your home by transferring heat between two reservoirs. In the warmer months, the heat pump acts like an air conditioner, removing heat from the air inside your home and transferring it outside. During colder months, heat from outdoor air is extracted and transferred to the interior of your home. Believe it or not, even a 32º Fahrenheit day produces enough heat to warm a home via a heat pump.

Aaron’s Mechanical Services wants you to stay comfortable all year round.  Most important we want you to spend the least amount of money possible while you stay comfortable. Cool Arizona Places: Tucson’s Mini Time Machine Museum

Experience a wonderful charm-filled world at the Mini Time Machine Museum, a fantastical museum in midtown Tucson. Discover intricate details in the more than 275 miniature houses and room boxes--all part of the museum founder's extraordinary 30-year collection. For adults and kids alike, this museum offers a unique experience, the only museum of its kind in the Southwest.

Their Mission Statement: Our mission is to preserve and advance the art of miniatures.

The Mini Time Machine was created from the imagination and dedication of Founders, Patricia and Walter Arnell. Pat’s fondness for miniatures began in the 1930’s, when as a young girl she received her first miniatures- a set of Strombecker wooden dollhouse furniture. It wasn’t until the Arnells moved to Tucson in 1979 that Pat began collecting in earnest. The Arnell’s became very active in the miniature community becoming recognized members and supporters of important organizations such as NAME (National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts) and IGMA (International Guild of Miniature Artisans). The collection grew and the Arnells, dreamed of a way to share it with more people. They envisioned an interactive space where the entertaining and educational aspects of the collection could be enjoyed by everyone- a place that would be enchanting, magical and provide a rich sensory experience.

The concept of “the mini time machine” was born out of the notion that a visitor would be seemingly transported to different eras by the stories and history of the pieces in the collection. The design and building of the museum was a huge collaborative effort. Swaim Associates Architects in Tucson, Arizona was chosen as the architect for the project. The exhibit design was carried out by Claro Creative Studios, a team of designers, gadgeteers and entertainment enthusiasts based out of Glendale, California. Construction of the project spanned nearly two years.

The History Gallery is a window into the past, offering visitors a glimpse into daily life in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, as well as insight into the use and production of miniatures and how that has changed with time.

The Enchanted Realm Gallery is filled with fantasy themed miniatures and collectibles. Folklore and fiction are brought to life with miniatures inhabited by dragons, faires, mice, frogs and other imaginary creatures.

The Exploring the World Gallery showcases miniatures depicting life around the world. Visitors will be amazed by the accuracy of scale and fine attention to detail achieved by the artists represented in this gallery.

Arizona Where Snowfall And A Dip In The Pool Happens On The Same Day

Flagstaff is getting snow and the tourist in the Valley of the Sun are hitting the pools and spas of the local resorts as the afternoon reaches the high sixties and low seventies in full sunshine. The great thing about Arizona is the wide variety of climates and weather.  This is due to the fact that is elevation of the state goes from nearly sea level (seventy feet) to above twelve-thousand five hundred feet.

Sometimes it is hard to figure out what to wear let alone how to plan on heat in your homes. Even in the Phoenix Metro area we have many days where you need to add heat to make your home comfortable and maintaining your heating system is an essential part of overall maintenance plans.

Do you heat your home with a furnace, heat pump or some type of HVAC system? Do you have and use a fireplace or space heaters? Is your fireplace one that burns wood or is it gas fired?

Is your heating system safe and running as efficiently as possible?  When was the last time it was inspected and serviced?

How do you decide who to hire to maintain your heating system? Do you use the yellow pages? Yes, they still exist. Do you watch Television and respond to an ad?  Perhaps you hear a radio ad. Do you do a Google search to find a contractor to service your heating system?  Do you ask a friend, co-worker or family member about a contractor they have used and now trust?

Can we suggest that you try Aaron’s Mechanical Services serving the Valley of the Sun since 1994. A quick, simple phone call to 623-388-4436 and we will be on our way to getting your home warm and toasty at the best possible price.

Any time you are interested in preventing or recovering lost efficiency, extending the life of your HVAC equipment, reducing the likelihood of a major breakdown, and increasing your comfort while (most importantly) lowering your operating cost, then give us a call today to schedule your preventive maintenance heating tune up.

It’s important to perform regular tune-ups on your heating equipment. In most cases, equipment warranties require a documented maintenance program performed by professional HVAC contractors.

January in Metro Phoenix and Rain Means Winter

A nice gentle rain rolled into the Valley of the Sun this weekend and has stayed around for early Monday too. Winter in Phoenix is mostly marked by a bit of rain and a drop of temperature into the mid-sixties.

So here we are with normal winter weather in Metro Phoenix. Is your home comfortable, warm and cozy?  If not, we at Aaron’s Mechanical Services can fix that.  We can get a technician to your home as quickly as possible.

Have you had your heating system checked this year? Well when was the last time your furnace was tested and tuned up?

Many homes in the Valley of the Sun use a natural gas fired furnace. When running properly they are both safe and efficient.  That is when they are running right.  If not, you could be wasting money every time your furnace runs.

Another aspect to consider is that a natural gas fired furnace produces carbon monoxide which is a deadly by product of the combustion. When your furnace is maintained and tuned up that gas normally goes up your chimney and out of your house.

Did You Know?

Quick CO Facts...

Hundreds of Americans die every year from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Carbon monoxide in the home can come from many sources. (anything that burns a fuel)

If you experience CO poisoning symptoms, get fresh air immediately and go to an emergency room.

Maintenance and prevention is the key to protecting you and your family.

Make sure your CO alarm meets the requirements of Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or International Approval Service (IAS).

Carbon monoxide is produced whenever a fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood or charcoal is burned. The amount of CO produced depends mainly on the quality or efficiency of combustion. A properly functioning burner, whether natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), has efficient combustion and produces little CO. However, an out-of-adjustment burner can produce life-threatening amounts of CO without any visible warning signs.

What Does Cold Mean in Metro Phoenix?

You know it is cold back east when the folks living in the southeastern states are thinking they need to move to the Arizona desert. Yup, fifteen degrees Fahrenheit in Atlanta is downright cold.

Reminds us of a week ago here in the Phoenix Metro area when were in the mid-twenties at night.

We have warmed up a bit here in the Valley of the Sun but we still have two to two and half months when it can be cold enough that we still need heat. How do you heat your home? Do you use a heat pump?  Do you use a natural gas fired furnace? Are you in a more rural area and need to use Propane as your heating fuel? No matter what you use Aaron’s Mechanical Services to make sure your heating system can keep you warm and not break the bank doing it.

If you are looking at new construction or serious remodeling it is also a great time to consider installing a modern furnace or heating system.

The latest craze in the heating and air conditioning industry seems to be the new gas/electric hybrid heating and cooling systems. While the split system hybrid units are more fuel efficient than a hybrid gas pack, the split system won't fit in every situation. Split systems consist of a heat pump / air conditioner, that is married to a high efficient gas furnace. For those of you who have an attic, a crawl space, or an inside closet, this split unit combination is perfect, but in some homes, it simply won’t fit.

Finally a solution has arrived -- a hybrid gas/electric packaged unit that sits outside your home and serves as both an air conditioner and high efficient heating system.

The concept of using fossil fuels along with electricity to increase the efficiency of a heating system isn’t new, however, electronic technology and the high cost of fuel is now making hybrid gas-pacs affordable for the average homeowner.

Hybrid gas-pacs take advantage of both heat pump & gas technologies and automatically switches to the one most efficient for the outdoor temperature. When it is chilly (above 40ºF), the system operates off of electricity, providing the heat pump’s steady, mellow heat. But when it turns cold, the hybrid gas-pac automatically switches to its internal gas furnace and its warmer, toasty air. The result is the ultimate in comfort.

These new hybrid gas-pacs are environmentally friendly, using the new R-410 refrigerant that is not harmful to Earth’s ozone layer. Its scroll compressor is also quiet, using only two working parts instead of the sixteen parts used in older compressors. Even better, hybrid systems cost less to operate.

Do You Know About Carbon Monoxide (CO) Poisoning in Your Home?

It is safe to say that the Valley of the Sun isn’t used to very cold weather.  When it is cold like it was a few days ago we may try some extra ways to add heat to our homes.  If it involves any type of burning we expose our families to the dangers of Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Did you know that a regular gas fired furnace can also expose your family to death from CO poisoning?

That furnace you expect to safely warm your home can become a death trap without proper maintenance.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and toxic gas. Because it is impossible to see, taste or smell the toxic fumes, CO can kill you before you are aware it is in your home.

Carbon monoxide is a product of incomplete combustion of organic matter due to insufficient oxygen supply to enable complete oxidation to carbon dioxide (CO2). It is often produced in domestic or industrial settings by motor vehicles that run on gasoline, diesel, propane, methane, or other carbon-based fuels and tools, heaters, and cooking equipment that are powered by carbon-based fuels. Exposures at 100 ppm or greater can be dangerous to human health.

Symptoms of mild acute poisoning will include light-headedness, confusion, headaches, vertigo, and flu-like effects; larger exposures can lead to significant toxicity of the central nervous system and heart, and even death. Following acute poisoning, long-term sequelae often occur. Carbon monoxide can also have severe effects on the fetus of a pregnant woman. Chronic exposure to low levels of carbon monoxide can lead to depression, confusion, and memory loss. Carbon monoxide mainly causes adverse effects in humans by combining with hemoglobin to form carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) in the blood. This prevents hemoglobin from releasing oxygen in tissues, effectively reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, leading to hypoxia. Additionally, myoglobin and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase are thought to be adversely affected. Carboxyhemoglobin can revert to hemoglobin, but the recovery takes time because the HbCO complex is fairly stable.

The danger of CO poison is one of the primary reason that your furnace needs a yearly inspection and tune-up. Using any type of fuel to cook or heat with inside your home exposes your family to these dangers.

Unvented kerosene and gas space heaters; leaking chimneys and furnaces; back-drafting from furnaces, gas water heaters, wood stoves, and fireplaces; gas stoves; generators and other gasoline powered equipment; automobile exhaust from attached garages; and tobacco smoke. Incomplete oxidation during combustion in gas ranges and unvented gas or kerosene heaters may cause high concentrations of CO in indoor air. Worn or poorly adjusted and maintained combustion devices (e.g., boilers, furnaces) can be significant sources, or if the flue is improperly sized, blocked, disconnected, or is leaking. Auto, truck, or bus exhaust from attached garages, nearby roads, or parking areas can also be a source.

Did You Survive The Phoenix Metro Area Cold Spell?

That was a very rare cold spell that the Valley of the Sun just went through.  Five nights in a row where the Phoenix Metro area had nighttime lows that were below freezing.  Some nights there were valley locations that were well into the mid-twenties.

It has been many years since we have seen lows that reached twenty-four degrees Fahrenheit. Many folks lost plants as the mercury stayed below freezing for as many as six or seven hours.

How well did your home heating system do keeping you and your family warm? Many folks went out to buy space heaters only to find them sold out everywhere. While space heaters may help take the chill off one room they aren’t very efficient, cost wise, when compared to a furnace or HVAC system.

Many folks also find the space heaters are dangerous. While most have a switch that shuts them off if they are typed over they can lead to overloaded outlets and that can be a cause for a house fire.

To prevent physical injury (or death) and damage to property, you should be aware of the dangers and take precautions when using these heaters.

Like all electric appliances, electric space heaters can cause accidental electric shock. Avoid using these in bathrooms, kitchens and anywhere else in the home where high moisture and/or liquid spills are common.

Electric heaters use a lot of electricity. Their use can easily overload circuits, especially if other appliances are on the same circuit. This may cause a power failure or even a fire. Do not run several appliances at the same time you are running these heaters.

Also, avoid extension cords. Most electric heaters are not intended for use with an extension cord. You should read and follow all the manufacturer’s instructions about using the electric heater.

House fires are one of the biggest dangers of any kind of space heater, including electric heaters.

Electric heaters may short-circuit, creating a fire from the spark. Additionally, paper, blankets or other materials positioned too close to the heater may combust, starting a house fire. You should never place a space heater near flammable materials or leave electric space heaters in a room unattended.

January or February could lead to even more days with very cold nighttime and even daytime with low temps. Call Aaron’s Mechanical Services to make sure your furnace is ready to keep your home warm and comfortable.
