Cool Arizona Places: Desert Botanical Garden

Courtesy of Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens
This coming weekend will be the first one-hundred degree days.  But mornings are still beautiful. The temperature at dawn is predicted to be 68 degrees Fahrenheit.  It should be in the low nineties around noon. So you could have a very nice morning.  Saturday May 4th 2014 could tie or even break the record high for the day.  The record is 100 degrees set in 1962.

All over the Valley of the Sun and into the desert the native flowers and plants are in full and beautiful bloom.  This should be a wonderful weekend to see these unique plants celebrating springtime in the desert.

This would be a good weekend to visit the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens.  The Desert Botanical Garden is a 140 acres botanical garden located at 1201 North Galvin Parkway.

Spring continues at the Garden with the Spring Butterfly Exhibit through May 11 and the Music in the Garden spring concert series Friday nights. FairyWorlds! opens at the Garden on May 15 and continues through early June.

Take a stroll through the beautiful Marshall Butterfly Pavilion and find yourself surrounded by hundreds of fluttering butterflies. Watch as butterflies sip nectar and bask in the sun in this lush and colorful habitat. Special outdoor displays showcase plants that attract butterflies.

Don't forget to check out the Chihuly After Dark events Saturday nights and the Chihuly in the Garden exhibition, closing May 18.

Discovery and surprise await you on the Garden trails. Artist Dale Chihuly returned to the Desert Botanical Garden with a stunning exhibition of his extraordinary and vibrant works of art.

Chihuly is credited with revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement and elevating the perception of the glass medium from craft to fine art. He is renowned for his ambitious architectural installations around the world, in historic cities, museums and gardens. Chihuly’s work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Corning Museum of Glass. Major exhibitions include Chihuly Over Venice (1995-96), Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem (1999), Garden Cycle (2001– present),and displays at the de Young Museum in San Francisco (2008), the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (2011) and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond (2012). Chihuly Garden and Glass opened at Seattle Center in 2012. Chihuly Garden and Glass opened at Seattle Center in 2012.

The Chihuly in the Garden Acoustiguide Audio Tour introduces a number of installations and artworks throughout the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens.

Aaron’s Mechanical Services Supports Project S.H.A.R.E.

We know that many of our customers are ready for their summer cooling needs.  Their equipment has been tuned-up by us.  They are ready for the rise in amount of their electrical bills as they use more energy

But some folks in our Valley of the Sun will need help this summer meeting the cost of staying cool.  Both APS and SRP have joined the Salvation Army in helping out with S.H.A.R.E.

That stands for Service to Help Arizonans with Relief on Energy. High energy bills can be a burden to individuals and families already in crisis.

By adding $1 or more to your electric bill each month, you can help fill an important community need through SHARE. Your contribution to SHARE can make a big difference in people's lives, now more than ever before. More SHARE funds are needed this year to keep up with growing community needs.

Emergency assistance is given to people who, due to crisis situations, are unable to pay their basic household energy bills and have exhausted all other potential sources of aid. Assistance is limited to one grant a year per recipient. SHARE is not a welfare or other government-funded program.

Tax-deductible donations are disbursed by The Salvation Army. Neither SRP nor The Salvation Army deducts any administrative costs from donations. SRP provides a year-end statement showing donations made through your SRP bill.
How you can help

If you'd like to contribute to SHARE, just complete our online sign-up form and we will simply add the amount you specify to your bill payment. Or, you can make a one-time contribution as specified on the online sign-up form.

You can also mail a donation to:

SRP SHARE Administration
P.O. Box 52025
Mail Station PAB 136
Phoenix, AZ 85072-2025

Customers in need of SHARE funds can request assistance by calling SRP Customer Resource Counselors at (602) 236-3000. An SRP Customer Resource Counselor can refer you to the appropriate Salvation Army office and advise what information you will need.

Aaron’s Mechanical Services Predicts First 100 Degree Day For 2014

OK, here it is, the first one-hundred degrees day (that is Fahrenheit, of course) for the Phoenix Metro Area in 2014 is going to occur on Saturday May 3rd.

Sure we had a bit of help from the National Weather Service in making that prediction.  The Valley of the Sun will be a bit early, average wise, for being at one-hundred degrees.  In fact Saturday stands a good chance for being over one-hundred.  With Friday May 2nd being at ninety-eight degrees we may well see 101 or 102 as our high for Saturday.  With a temperature range of five degrees or more from the highest to lowest high, Saturday will be interesting.

So you have just a few days left to make sure that your air conditioner is ready for the summer hot weather.  Have you had your AC Tune-up yet?  Get it now, while you can.  Just give Aaron’s Mechanical Services a call at 623-388-4436 so we can keep you cool and comfortable.

We hope you enjoyed our very cool weekend that we just had.  Looks like you will have to wait until late October to see the daytime temps dip into the seventies again. As you know that could even be into November before that happens.

From now on you will have to drive up north to cool off on the weekends.  Yes, you can go to the high country around Tucson as well.  But for more space and fun things to do we normally think that going north offers more choices.  You can also consider going more north east up around the Pine Top Lakeside areas as well.

Without air conditioning the southwest desert is not a fun place to be during the summer.  Phoenix sets smack dab in the Sonoran desert.  While most it stretches to the south west away from Phoenix we are still very much a full on desert climate.  Without the irrigation system here in the Valley of the Sun we would not be able to support the lush plants that now grow here now.

So that brings us back to the “burning” question, “Is your Air Conditioner ready for our coming summer heat?”

If you are not ready, and we don’t want to brag, but, Aaron’s Mechanical Services is the one to call at 623-388-4436 so you can keep your home cool and comfortable in the coming months.

Did You Know?

The desert tortoise is able to live where ground temperatures may exceed 140 degrees F because of its ability to dig underground burrows three to six feet deep to escape the heat of summer. It is one of the most elusive inhabitants of the desert, spending up to 98% of its time underground.

Looking for fast and fair HVAC service? Aaron’s Mechanical Services wants you to stay comfortable all year round.  Most important we want you to spend the least amount of money possible while you stay comfortable. If your air conditioning system or HVAC unit needs service or replacement please think of us and call at 623-388-4436 and we will come to you and solve your cooling Unit’s service needs.

Aaron’s Mechanical Services Featured Air Conditioner Brands

We recently decided to feature two brands of air conditioners that we felt had the very best value.  We chose from many brands and felt that initial cost, long life, reliability and cost of operation were the best values and criteria to choose from.

Who did we choose? We are glad you asked.  The clear winners were two of the top brands, Goodman and Amana.

The Valley of the Sun with many consecutive days over one-hundred degrees Fahrenheit stresses an AC Unit in very unique ways.  On brutal days with highs pushing 120 degrees and lows that may not fall below 90 degrees could mean that your HVAC may run twenty-fours straight. This could go on for several days in a row.  In the Phoenix Metro area you need to be very careful when choosing an Air Conditioner.

Don't choose between affordability, durability, and optimum cooling comfort. Install a Goodman or Amana brand air conditioner and get all three.

Both Goodman and Amana brands have central air conditioning systems that are perfect for your home and at refreshingly affordable prices.

Even on the hottest days of the year, you can keep your home cool and comfortable while enjoying lower energy costs with a high-efficiency air conditioning. Get what we believe to be the best warranty protection in the heating and cooling industry. As you review the various Goodman and Amana brand air conditioners, remember that higher SEER numbers reflect the most energy-efficient systems.

They both produce a complete line of residential and light commercial air conditioning and heating equipment at its modern, high-technology factories in Houston, Texas; Dayton, Tennessee; and Fayetteville, Tennessee, Goodman's equipment is sold through a world-wide network of distributors and independent installers, like Aaron’s Mechanical Services, who are dedicated to uphold the companies’ high quality standards.

All Goodman and Amana brand air conditioners come with outstanding warranty coverage. Call us to learn about the warranties that apply to each specific product, or get a copy of the applicable warranty from their websites.

Both Goodman and Amana brand air conditioners bring you Refreshingly Affordable Home Comfort and Aaron’s Mechanical Services is your very best local resource.

At Aaron’s Mechanical Services we want you to stay cool even in the hottest parts of an Arizona summer.  If your AC unit needs service or replacement please think of us and call at 623 -388-4436 and we can come to you and solve your air conditioning repair needs.

Cool Arizona Places: Chocolate, Chili and Cochineal

The Heard Museum has a great show that is running through November of 2014.

Explore chocolate, chili and cochineal dye, which will be celebrated through both art and special programs during this exhibit (including a giant cacao tree in the gallery!). These three products of the Western Hemisphere have added beauty and zest to the lives of people around the world. The merits of chocolate and chili should be at once recognizable.

Cochineal is a red dye made from insects that feed on cactus from the genus Opuntia, and has been prized throughout the world since the 15th century. Cochineal was used to dye bayeta cloth, and the yarns of the cloth became prized fibers for Navajo weavers. The rich crimson dye also colored the paint used in Hispanic retablo and bulto art. These three contributions to the world are in the vein of recent popular books 1491 and 1493 by Charles Mann.

Chocolate, Chili & Cochineal: Changing Taste Around The World

Chocolate joins many other delectably displayed depictions of foods in the Heard’s presentation about several edibles many people might be surprised to know are from the Americas.

The exhibit explores foods — chili, tomatoes, potatoes, peanuts, avocados, maple syrup, corn, beans, squash — and a tiny insect, the cochineal, indigenous to the Americas that when exported greatly affected other parts of the world.

Sixteenth-century Spanish conquistadors guarded the source of the brilliant red dye derived from cochineal, the tiny insect that feeds on prickly pear cactus. Cochineal was used in historic Navajo textiles and santos from Northern New Mexico, including the image La Divina Pastora by Charles M. Carrillo.

Explore the museum’s rich history as one of the Phoenix area’s first cultural attractions, and see how the museum has grown to be one of the world’s finest destinations for learning about American Indian arts and cultures.

Springtime In Phoenix Think Planning and Planting.

Part of your springtime “planning” should be about staying cool and comfortable.  And we might add doing that at a price point that won’t empty your wallet.

Here in the Valley of the Sun we face (on average) from 100 to 140 days where the mercury will be above one-hundred degrees Fahrenheit.  I might also add that is in the shade.  With modern air conditioning you can stay cool and comfortable.  But at what price?  This is where the planning comes in.

While APS and SRP don’t raise rates every year they do raise them every so often.  Our best bet to keep our AC costs as low as possible is to have our HVAC units professionally serviced at least once a year.

This is a good time to mention that Aaron’s Mechanical Services is running our springtime tune-ups at a special price. Please give us a call at 623-388-4436 to find out what we can do for you. Our Fast and Fair service and prices also help you in saving your overall AC dollar.

Back East they worry about being able to afford the high price of heating oil.  While we don’t worry about the cost of heating here in the Phoenix Metro area the trade-off is we can see our summer electric bills well north of $500 dollars a month.  Even a small well insulated home can see a monthly electric bill well over two-hundred-fifty dollars a month.

Correctly planting shade trees can save you on your electric bill.  http://www.savewithsrp.com/RD/shadetrees.aspx

When Will Be The First 100 Degrees For Phoenix In 2014

If we look at the National Weather Service forecast for April 21st, 2014 we find that they are predicting ninety-eight degrees Fahrenheit for the Valley of the Sun. The interesting news is that over the next ten days the daily temperatures will rise and fall from today’s high and perhaps as low as eighty degrees but not approaching the century mark during those days.

Most of us have been running our air conditioners to cool off our homes when we return from work.  No one wants to suffer with the high nineties and our homes getting too hot to be comfortable.

Were you one of the folks that found their air conditioner wasn’t working when it was first fired up this spring?  A tune-up special service from Aaron’s Mechanical Services would have prevented that nasty “no cool air” surprise.

Based on the weather forecast it looks like the first 100 degree day for the Phoenix Metro Area just may well be next month rather than April.  After all the average first one-hundred degree day is May 13th.  Will it hold off that long this year?  I’m betting we will see a 100 (plus) degree day before that this year.

While many locations have seen snow in the last few days I think it is safe to say spring has returned to much of the country.

Did You Know?

Across the Phoenix Metro Area it is not uncommon for a difference of ten degrees or more from the highest temperature to the lowest at any given time. Greater Phoenix covers a large area. Your location may be at a higher elevation or have more surrounding vegetation, for example. Official readings in Phoenix may be as much as five or ten degrees different than other parts of the Valley of the Sun (maybe hotter, maybe cooler) at any point in time.

At any single point in the Valley of the Sun the temperature may shift 40 degrees during a twenty-four hour cycle.

Over the last one hundred years the average daytime high in Phoenix Arizona has gone up.  This is attributed to the loss of vegetation and the increase in pavement and buildings.

The official temperature for Phoenix is taken by the National Weather Service at Sky Harbor International airport. They use what is called an Automated Surface Observation System (ASOS) to record weather data.

Aaron’s Mechanical Services wants you to stay cool and comfortable all year round.  If your cooler, air conditioning system or HVAC unit needs its spring tune-up service, repair or replacement please think of us and call at 623-388-4436 and we will come to you and solve your cooling and comfort needs.

Are Extended Warranties For Air Conditioners A Good Idea?

The quick, short answers is “It all depends on the cost, terms and conditions. The real test comes in how your service or repair is handled when you need them.

Sooner or later we all face that time when the factory warranty expires on your air conditioner or HVAC unit comes to an end.  What to do about future repairs?   Make no mistake about it your AC unit is going to need both routine maintenance and emergency repairs.

Here in the Valley of the Sun, a typical year will mean one-hundred to one-hundred and forty days where you air conditioner will need to be running.

On a hot summer day, you know the one, when temperatures are running one-hundred-fourteen and that’s in the shade and you are told that they can’t work you in until tomorrow or the next day.

When you have an extended warranty you seldom can select the company that does your service work.  Can that be an issue? The company that offers the plan must make a profit to stay in business and that means they hire a service company who will work for the very least amount of money.  Will that company have experienced technicians or will they be ones that are just out of school. Or will they have gone to school at all.

One consideration is the monthly cost of your extended service plan.  If you pay just under twenty dollars a month for a plan with a modest deductible you will find that after three years you will have paid nearly four hundred dollars.  That could have covered several service calls.

Many times these plans are sold with tales of disastrous bill to cover a complete failure of your HVAC system.  Be very careful of the terms of these extended service contracts.  What can they use to exclude your repair from being covered?  If you forget to call them to do routine service will that violate a requirement and the failure be blamed on you and hence not covered.

Some HVAC salesmen push extended warranties because they’re so profitable to the company that sells them. They’re banking on the fact that your equipment is unlikely to break down before the extended warranty expires. If they’re banking on it, maybe you should, too, and save your money.

Some companies even pay their contractors extra if they can talk homeowners into buying extended warranties. And if you buy an extended warranty from someone other than the manufacturer, it’s possible that the manufacturer won’t honor it. That means you have to pay for the repair yourself and then try to get reimbursed by the company that sold you the warranty.

These extended service contracts are a perfect example of “Buyer Beware!”

Cool Arizona Places: The Phoenix Zoo On Saturday Morning

With a high of ninety degrees Fahrenheit predicted for this Saturday and what we know about average temperatures this ( Spring time ) time of year this Saturday morning may be one of the best mornings to make a family visit to the Phoenix Zoo.

The low Saturday ( April 19th 2014 6:00am ) is predicted to be in the low sixties.  The Phoenix Zoo opens at 9:00am and closes at 5:00pm this time of year.  You can see the admission price and year-round hours on their web site at http://phoenixzoo.org/plan-your-visit/hours-rates/ .

The Phoenix Zoo opened in 1962 and is the largest privately owned, non-profit zoo in the United States. In the spring of 1961, Robert Maytag, grandson of the founder of Maytag appliance company, called a group of friends together to discuss the idea of building a zoo in Phoenix.  The idea soon took off as Maytag and his “dedicated amateurs” proceeded to get support from other Valley leaders.

“It was a period of delightful, enthusiastic chaos,” recalled Nancy Maytag Love.  “We were absolute beginners.  We didn’t have any idea what we were getting into, but our enthusiasm and the certainty that we were building a great zoo carried us through every challenge we faced.”

Robert Maytag’s unexpected death was nearly the end for the zoo.  Nancy Maytag stepped forward, declaring the zoo would be completed on schedule as a memorial to her husband.  It was the call to action the community needed.  Individuals, families, clubs and companies all came forward with help, giving wherever it was most needed.

“Build the Zoo in ’62!” began gracing buses, delivery trucks, moving vans, shopping carts, grocery bags and vacant buildings.  Family memberships were sold for $5.00 a year.  Every news reporter, station manager, and radio announcer was hit up for a promotional spot.  Social clubs, professional societies, auxiliaries, school groups, unions, sororities and fraternities all felt the pinch. On November 21, 1962, Nancy Maytag cut the ribbon before a crowd of thousands, officially opening the Maytag Zoo, named in her husband’s honor.

With the name changed to the Phoenix Zoo in 1963 to encourage community involvement, the early years of the zoo continued to be a financial struggle. Earl Bimson, a banker, stepped forward to provide the zoo with the strong leadership and stability it needed for the next 13 years.

Have you seen the new Animal Olympic-themed show? It highlights the many amazing talents and abilities of the Zoo animals. During the show you’ll have close encounters with a variety of animals. Some of the animals you may see include a snake, rat, goat, rabbit, parrot, tortoise, hawk, vulture, porcupine and more! After the show you’ll have the chance to meet the animal athletes up-close. Please note that different animals may be featured during each show and that the animal show is dependent on weather and may be canceled without notice.

Did You Know?

Historians believe people have eggs for thousands of years to celebrate the spring equinox, which was often around the start of the new-year prior to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. Christian missionaries adopted the existing pagan celebrations and began using eggs as a symbol of new life and resurrection and to represent Jesus's emergence from the tomb. Many cultures still decorate eggs to mark the start of spring and new life.

Many live chicks, ducklings and bunnies are sold this time of year.

Fabergé created fifty stunning gold or jeweled Easter eggs for the Russian Imperial family from 1885 through to 1916? Forty-two still survive today.

Aaron’s Mechanical Services wishes you an eggceptional celebration this holiday weekend!

Aaron’s Mechanical Services Wants Your Home Tune-up Business

We always say that “Aaron’s Mechanical Services wants you to stay comfortable all year round”.

We also bet that you have noticed that the last two afternoons have been what you might just call “HOT”.  OK, not Arizona in July Hot.  But, the very high nineties and pushing one-hundred degrees Fahrenheit is pretty hot no matter what you compare it to. Everyone knows that the Phoenix Metro area is the hottest large city in the United States.

Did you turn on your air conditioner to cool of your home? Did it run as you expected?  Of course you can’t tell but how much of your hard earned money it spent cooling down your house? Did you know that an air conditioning tune-up will save you money on your electric bill?

So just why haven’t you called Aaron’s Mechanical Services for your spring AC tune-up yet?

Did You Know?

While the residents of the Valley of the Sun may feel that their city must be the hottest place around at times, top honors actually go to Lake Havasu City, where the mercury climbed to one-hundred-twenty-eight degrees on June 29, 1994. This bests the Phoenix mark of 122 degrees, set on June 26, 1990.

Typically, the heaviest rain falls during the summer thunderstorm season, or monsoon, in our state. The rain can accumulate very quickly, resulting in flooded streets or washes, and can even cause deaths via flash flooding. In Phoenix, the greatest rainfall in a twenty-four hour period was 4.98 inches on July 1st and 2nd, 1911. This total is quite a bit less than the Arizona record of 11.4 inches, which fell on Workman Creek (near Globe) on September 4th and 5th, 1970.

If you want a real hot day you can also try thinking about our neighbors to the west, Palm Springs and Death Valley California.

The hottest weather temperature ever officially recorded in the resort city of Palm Springs is 123 degrees, which has occurred on four different dates. The first time it was a record high of 123 degrees in Palm Springs was on July 10, 1979, the second time was on August 1, 1993, and the last two times occurred on July 28th and July 29th in 1995.

The hottest air temperature ever recorded in Death Valley was 134 °F (57 °C) on July 10, 1913, at Furnace Creek, which is the hottest atmospheric temperature ever recorded on earth.

Cool Arizona Places: We Say “Time To Go North Young Man”

Courtesy of Arizona Fish and Game
We have modified the very famous line “Go West Young Man” to better serve this time of year here in the Valley of the Sun. To stay cool and visit Arizona it is time to take your family and Go North!

Here is a quick recap of the original quote; "Go West, young man" is a quote by American author Horace Greeley concerning America's expansion westward, related to the then-popular concept of Manifest Destiny.

Greeley favored westward expansion. He saw the fertile farmland of the west as an ideal place for people willing to work hard for the opportunity to succeed. The phrase came to symbolize the idea that agriculture could solve many of the nation's problems of poverty and unemployment characteristic of the big cities of the East. It is one of the most commonly quoted sayings from the nineteenth century and may have had some influence on the course of American history.

Some sources have claimed the phrase is derived from the following advice in Greeley's July 13, 1865 editorial in the New York Tribune, but this text does not appear in that issue of the newspaper. The actual editorial instead encourages Civil War veterans to take advantage of the Homestead Act and colonize the public lands. “Washington is not a place to live in. The rents are high, the food is bad, the dust is disgusting and the morals are deplorable. Go West, young man, go West and grow up with the country.”

With the Phoenix Metro area running daytime highs of near 100° this weekend it is time to consider weekend recreation in the northern half of Arizona.

Of course you can stay here and be cool and comfortable in the air conditioning or cool off in your pool if you want. Can we take a moment and ask if you have taken the time to do an Aaron’s Mechanical Services tune-up on your AC unit or HVAC system? Simple to do just call us at 623-388-4436.

You can see more and stay cool in the outdoors if you travel an hour or so north of the valley.  Are you and your family fans of fishing?  After you get your license the Arizona Game and Fish department has a website that lists the “Hot” fishing destinations that they update as the seasons change.  http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/fishing.shtml

This week they give the following info on the site: “Anglers may want to target Fool Hollow Lake and Show Low Lake, where large  rainbow trout (13 inches of average length) are being stocked this week. Crappie have begun to spawn at Roosevelt Lake, but not in big numbers. The angler pictured above reported catching this 15-inch, 2-pound crappie last weekend from Rosy. Sounds like plenty of largemouth bass are in a full spawn at Apache, Saguaro and Canyon lakes. Once again, it’s crucial to release these fish quickly and move on to another spot to ensure these bass spawn and produce plenty of fish for the future.”

Phoenix Pushes 100 Degrees, Is Your Air Conditioner Ready?

We don’t want this to sound like a “We Told You So”, but we have been warning you that “Hot” was coming to the Phoenix Metro Area and The Valley of the Sun.

With Tuesday’s National Weather Forecast showing ninety-four degrees Fahrenheit and Wednesday’s high predicted to be one-hundred degrees (does 100° feel hotter to you?) we all will need some sort of cooling.

As you can guess Air Conditioners all over the valley will be firing up this afternoon. Is your AC unit ready?  Have you called Aaron’s Mechanical Services and scheduled (or perhaps already had) your Spring Tune-up?

With no check-up or tune-up you can only hope that your HVAC system is ready and will work when you need it later today or tomorrow.  With as hot as 2014 has been in the last month or so I guess we can consider ourselves lucky that it has waited this long to hit Phoenix with its first one hundred degree day.

Of course we can schedule your tune-up for your home, but first you have to call us.  So pick up your phone and call Aaron’s Mechanical Services at 623-388-4436 and we can get your home ready with our individual Air Conditioner Tune-up special.

With several days in a row where the afternoon will reach 100 degrees (or very close to it) will your family and pets be able to stay cool and comfortable at home?  Many of the valley residents will be at work and their businesses will be using air conditioning.  But how will you deal with staying cool at home?

Do you plan on trying to stay cool by opening windows after dark? Did you know that many criminal entries into homes are made through open windows during the evening and night?

Remember that if your AC system is tuned-up and ready for this summer you will save money on your electric bill!

So an Air Conditioner Tune-Up from Aaron’s Mechanical Services can save you money, help keep your family safe and comfortable.  Why haven’t you called? It is simple and works with both cell phones and landlines, really.  Just call 623-388-4436 and we will be at your home as soon as possible.

You haven’t called yet… Why is that?

Did You know?

How Phoenix Arizona got its name?

In Greek Mythology, the Phoenix Bird, as it was growing old and about to die, would consume itself in fire. From the ashes of the original bird, a larger, more magnificent bird would arise.

The story begins over 1,500 years ago when the Hohokam Indians began to occupy much of the present day Salt River Valley beginning in the early 5th century.

Before there was ever a large city called Phoenix, before stadiums and freeway loops, and airport terminals and cell phone towers, the inhabitants of the Pueblo Grande ruins tried to irrigate the land of the Valley with about 135 miles of canal systems. A severe drought is thought to have marked the demise of the "Hohokam", or 'the people who have gone.' Different groups of Indians inhabited the land of the Valley of the Sun after them.

In 1867 Jack Swilling of Wickenburg stopped to rest by the White Tank Mountains, and envisioned a place that, with just some water, looked like promising farm land. He organized the Swilling Irrigation Canal Company, and moved to the Valley.

The name Phoenix was actually suggested by a man named Darrell Duppa, who is purported to have said "A new city will spring phoenix-like upon the ruins of a former civilization."

Phoenix became official on May 4, 1868 when an election precinct was formed here. The Post Office was established just over a month later on June 15. Jack Swilling was the Postmaster.

How Does The R22 Phase Out Affect Phoenix Homeowners?

Does the phase-out of R22 refrigerant gas affect how your AC Unit will be serviced in the near future? Chlorodifluoromethane, better known as HCFC-22 or R-22 is a common refrigerant that is currently being phased out here in the U.S. due to its very high potential to exacerbate ozone-depletion (R-22 is thought to be one of the global warming gases).

U.S. EPA has tried to reduce use of this material by imposing strict quotas on its production. Since 2010, the agency has also banned sale of new air-conditioning units containing the compound, and has promoted recycling of the gas from old machines so it will not be released. Despite these efforts, the agency has drawn criticism for not doing enough.

What does this mean to you and future service calls that your unit may need. First it will need to be determined if your unit uses R-22 refrigerant.

U.S. EPA regulations related to fluorochemical refrigerants should result in a safe and smooth transition from CFCs to alternatives that are far better for the environment.  However, it is challenging to ensure compliance with regulations that involve tens of thousands of certified technicians servicing millions of air conditioning and refrigeration units and systems across the U.S.

By law, owners of large equipment (e.g., supermarket systems, commercial air conditioning units) have to ensure that the equipment is maintained and leaks are repaired by certified technicians.

Homeowners of smaller central A/C units are not legally responsible for refrigerant leaks, but anyone servicing the smaller equipment is still prohibited from knowingly venting R-22.  While the choice to recharge leaky equipment may come down to economics (recharge costs vs. new unit) understanding this choice may be critical when the dollar costs are considered.  The unit would likely continue to require routine servicing, with increasingly more expensive recharges.

The EPA is warning homeowners, home improvement contractors and air conditioning technicians of potential safety hazards related to the use of propane or other unapproved refrigerants in home air conditioning systems.  Home air conditioning systems are not designed to handle propane or other similar flammable refrigerants. The use of these substances poses a potential fire or explosion hazard for homeowners and service technicians.

When it comes to safe Air Conditioning service, remember the old saying… "if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably isn't true".
