When Can We Expect The First 100 Degree Day?

Do you think that it is way too early for that question? Maybe, but do you know that there is a good chance that it will be ninety degrees Fahrenheit or above by this coming Sunday March 16th?

The National Weather Service records indicated that the average first one hundred degree day is usually May 13th. The way 2014 has treated so far I can only guess that we will see our first one hundred degree day well before our average of the past decade.

Did You Know?

Earliest 100 degree day is; March 26, 1988

Latest one hundred degree day is; June 18, 1913 (we can only hope)

Does that mean that this year will be more like our 1988 year and we will see one hundred degrees Fahrenheit by the end of March in 2014?

If Spring turns out to be a very hot variation is your air conditioner ready for that?  Is it about time to call and do a tune-up now and be ready or do you want to be way too hot by late March?

Will this summer be longer and hotter than normal?

Did You Know?

When do we see the last occurrence of a 100 degree daytime high or even higher in the Valley of the Sun? Here are the average records form the National Weather Service.

Earliest - September 2, 1904. While this sounds great to me, please note that this record is one hundred and ten (that is 110) years old.  I don’t see that being broken anytime soon and of course the Phoenix Metro area has grown by a factor of more than 120 times since then.  We have torn-up and paved over many, many acres of farm land since then.  Asphalt and concrete hold in heat, where plants and crops used to cool us off a bit.

Back then air conditioning way a pan of ice with a fan blowing air toward you.  Thankfully we have moved way beyond that for both personal and whole house cooling.

Latest - October 23, 2003.

Average - September 28th.
