Are You Comfortable?

Did you know there is no universal definition of comfort, especially as it relates to temperature.  The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, using two decades’ worth of research data clearly demonstrate that different people experience the same temperature differently. People report being comfortable all over the thermostat, from 43 degrees Fahrenheit all the way up to 86.

If you have seen the Arizona forecast for this coming weekend you know that 106 degrees Fahrenheit is in our near future.  At one hundred and six degrees we aren’t going to be comfortable without a well running air conditioner.

Is your AC unit ready?  How sure are you?

There is still time to sneak in a tune-up service call.  Getting your unit checked is much better than sweltering in the heat waiting for a service call on a dead air conditioner.

For some reason the local Television stations try not to use the “Hot” word to describe the typical summer days.  They use “seasonably warm” and “expected day-time temperature” as though that keeps us feeling more comfortable.

With out air conditioning your house isn’t going to be comfortable for long.  At Aaron’s Mechanical Service we can get your home comfortable again … Fast!  We are as close as your phone.

We take a very comprehensive approach to each and every air conditioning repair and maintenance call we get, and our attention to detail results in the finest AC performance for our clients.

Aaron’s Mechanical Service has been bringing Air Conditioning Sales, Service and Repair to the Valley of the Sun and keeping you comfortable since 1994!

Cool Arizona Places: Children’s Museum Of Phoenix

With this weekends temperatures expected to be in the 106 degree range an indoor experience would be very nice for the kids, from coolingaz.com may we suggest, Children’s Museum Of Phoenix.

Acting on the principle that learning is a joy, the Children’s Museum of Phoenix’s mission is to engage the minds, muscles and imaginations of children and the grown-ups who care about them. With hands-on, interactive exhibits designed for children ages birth to 10, the Museum focuses on learning through play, with emphasis on early childhood education and school-readiness.

The Museum’s vision is to foster a joy of learning and to:

• Provide engaging projects, exhibits and programming for young children and their families;
• Educate parents and caregivers about child development and parenting techniques;
• Build cultural understanding, positive social interaction, and celebrate diversity;
• Serve as a gateway to other cultural institutions and community programs.

The Children’s Museum of Phoenix was founded in 1998 as the Phoenix Family Museum by a small group of volunteers. In 2001, Phoenix voters overwhelmingly approved $10.5 million in bond funds to purchase and partially renovate the historic Monroe School as the Museum’s new home.

In 2005, Debbie Gilpin became President & CEO and began the plans for the renovation and restoration of the Monroe School building, developing a strong support base among private individuals and corporations and providing the type of inspirational and diverse programming to make a wonder-filled museum. The Museum launched its Childhood Dreams Built By You capital campaign with a goal of raising $12.3 million prior to opening. In December of that year the Phoenix Family Museum officially changed its name to the Children’s Museum of Phoenix to more clearly convey the Museum’s focus.

Renovation on the Monroe School began in 2006 and the Children’s Museum opened its doors to the public in June 2008.

Prior to opening the permanent facility, the Children’s Museum of Phoenix fulfilled our mission to engage the minds, muscles and imaginations of children through a traveling exhibit program called Museum without Walls (MWW). Consisting of eight hands-on learning experiences, MWW visited schools and community events across the Valley. Over 275,000 participants took part in MWW traveling exhibits between 1998 and 2008.

Location: 215 N. 7th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85034 - 602.253.0501

Today Is Memorial Day, Please Take A Moment…

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday which, as you know, occurs every year on the last Monday of May.

Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

Annual Decoration Days for particular cemeteries are held on a Sunday in late spring or early summer in some rural areas of the American South, notably in the mountains. In cases involving a family graveyard where remote ancestors as well as those who were deceased more recently are buried, this may take on the character of an extended family reunion to which some people travel hundreds of miles. People gather on the designated day and put flowers on graves and renew contacts with kinfolk and others. There often is a religious service and a "dinner on the ground," the traditional term for a potluck meal in which people used to spread the dishes out on sheets or tablecloths on the grass. It is believed that this practice began before the American Civil War and thus may reflect the real origin of the "memorial day" idea.

Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

How Hot Is An Arizona Summer?

Will this be your very first Arizona Desert Summer?  Are you new to the Valley of the Sun?  If this is true you are probably wondering why we talk about making sure your AC unit is ready for the summer.

It depends on where you have moved from but you may already have had an Arizona day that was as hot or hotter than your warmest day at “Home.”

Have you heard the AZ “Hot” stories?  Yes, you can really fry an egg on the pavement.  Yes, on a hot summer day the asphalt in a parking lot is so hot the heel of your stilettos will sink in just a bit.  Yes, dogs can burn their paw pads if they are walked on a hot afternoon.  (Never a great time for anybody to do a walk)  Yes, you can burn your arm on the metal as you get in and out of your car.  Yes, you can have a window failure on a hot summer day if your car doesn’t have a least one window opened just a little bit.  Yes, phones and electronic items can stop working if left in your car.  (Many times they recover when they cool off)

And yes, on several occasions it has exceeded 120 degrees Fahrenheit in Phoenix on a hot summer day.  The highest official temperature ever recorded in Phoenix was 122 degrees on June 26, 1990.  The following night on the 27th in 1990, the temperature did not fall any lower than 93.

I know you have heard that Arizona has a dry heat.  Sorry, but from late June through August we have what some call a monsoon season where the humidity goes much higher than normal and we enter our “Hot and Humid” season.

Oh, did a forget to say Welcome to Arizona?  It really is a great place to live, work and have fun.  You will find that a working Air Conditioner is your best friend.  We can’t help with your car but at home or  business we are ready to help you get cool and comfortable.

What Goes Into The Price of Air Conditioner Service?

Did you know that at Aaron's Mechanical Service we have been bringing Air Conditioning Sales, Service and Repair to the Valley of the Sun since 1994!  We help make life comfortable by bringing you Quality Work, Fair Prices as quickly as possible.

Different companies charge different prices for all of the different services related to keeping you comfortable.  That is understandable, because have different costs for doing business.  I’m sure you are aware of the most basic ones.  They must pay for the parts they use.  They must have a service vehicle and buy insurance and fuel for that service truck.  Direct expenses to be able to get to your home.

The companies must have insurance for you and their employees as well.  They also spend money on advertising to let you know how to get to tem when you need their services.

Do you know how much it costs to run a local television commercial series?  It is in the tens of thousands of dollars.  Companies using those types of ads must recover the cost by a percentage to the customer’s billing.  Advertising is a necessary cost to doing business and it is part of the customer’s price.

The costs of doing business (CODB) for a company can be found by adding fixed costs, such as rent, advertising, service vehicles, utilities, insurance, wages, and variable costs, which are the costs to purchase the product you are buying from them.  Each day a service technician can only service a limited number of service calls.  Of course an experienced tech can do a better, faster job than a technician just out of school.  So your cost is affected by the level of experience of the technician sent to help you stay comfortable.

The more efficiently a company is run the lower the “pass along” cost to their customers.  At Aaron’s Mechanical Service we pride ourselves of running a tight ship so we don’t need to pass-along unnecessary expenses to our customers.

When you need a home Air Conditioner service company later this summer please keep Aaron’s Mechanical Service in mind.  We are as close as your phone.

Need Air Conditioner repair or replacement to cool off in this coming summer’s record heat?  Give Aaron’s Mechanical Service a call and let us help you get your AC running efficiently again!

Proper Sealing and Insulation Lowers Energy Bills

All us of don’t want to spend even a penny more to cool our homes and business and stay comfortable at the same time.  When you look for energy saving tips one that is mentioned often is that raising the temperature in your home will save energy and money.  You could take that even farther and not use your AC to save the most money.  But would you be comfortable?  Not in Arizona!

Your very best option to save money on your air conditioning cost is too do preventive maintenance and have good insulation and no leaking windows or doors.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 50% to 70% of the energy used in homes is for heating or cooling activities. By properly insulating your home you can create a more comfortable, consistent indoor climate while significantly improving your home's energy efficiency. If you live in a home that's more than just a few years old, it's probably worth your time to figure out if your home is properly insulated. This buying guide will help you learn about the different types of insulation used in residential construction, and give you the knowledge and confidence necessary to make the right purchase decision to meet your home insulation needs.

Simple insulation strips applied to your door frames will keep the cool air in and the heat out and they are simple to install.  Best of all they are very cost effective.  Windows are a bit more expensive as they may need to be replaced with new versions with special reflective coatings and multiple glass panes to be really energy efficient.

You can start by using window shades, aftermarket reflective coatings and make sure the window openings are well sealed to improve your existing windows.  Take a look at the following DIY window project; http://www.diynetwork.com/remodeling/weather-stripping-tips/index.html

The next tip to save even more money is insulation.  You can add more to your attic with either blown-in or adding an new layer of batts.  If you have just blown-in and many years have past you should consider replacing and adding new all at the same time as the old insulation will have lost much of its insulating properties.

When choosing insulation, one of the most important qualities to note is the R-value, which indicates how well insulation resists heat transfer. R-values vary based on the type, thickness and density of the material being used. Insulation with a higher R-value will perform better than insulation with a lower rating.

Simple insulation upgrades will lead to real dollar savings on future energy bills.

Cool Arizona Places: Roosevelt Lake

Once the largest man-made lake in the world, Roosevelt Lake is still the largest lake entirely in Arizona. The Theodore Roosevelt Dam is 280 feet high and 723 feet long. The dam was finished in 1911 and its height increased in 1995. Roosevelt Lake is 23 miles long, with 128 miles of shoreline and a surface area of about 21,000 acres (water levels fluctuate and so does size accordingly). Two major drainages feed into the lake, Salt River and Tonto Creek.

Fishing is a common recreational activity at Roosevelt Lake. The lake is home to a variety of game fish including crappie carp, Sunfish, flathead and channel catfish, and small mouth bass and largemouth bass. There is a slot size limit for the bass. Only one bass can be taken per day measuring between 13 and 16 inches.

Until recently, it also hosted the state's most significant population of the federally endangered Southwestern Willow Flycatcher. Since the lake's rise following heavy rains in the winter of 2005, the population dynamics between this site and the other significant Arizona population (on the San Pedro River) are unclear.

There are several Arizona Trail trailheads in the vicinity. The 800 mile (1,280 km) long hiking trail extending from the Arizona-Mexico border to Utah crosses the Salt River on the State Route 188 bridge that crosses Theodore Roosevelt Lake just northeast of Roosevelt Dam.

Roosevelt Lake Wildlife Area encompasses much of the west end of Theodore Roosevelt Lake. The wildlife area extends from the northwest portion of the lake southward to where Tonto Creek enters to Cottonwood Creek on the southwest portion of the lake. Due to its size, the habitat in the wildlife area is quite diverse and consists of lush upper Sonoran Desert, marsh, open water and, depending on flows, inundated vegetation.

As a result of the diversity of habitat types, a visitor can expect to see a wide array of wildlife during all seasons. In addition, this end of the lake is surrounded by Four Peaks, Superstition, Mazatzal, and Sierra Ancha Mountain Ranges, making it a picturesque place to view wildlife. A visitor can expect sweltering summer temperatures to regularly exceed 100 degrees F while winter temperatures may drop below freezing.

Save Money Two Ways Cooking Outside

Many times the reason given for outdoor cooking is that it doesn’t heat up the house and during an Arizona summer that is an important consideration.  Of course, many folks think that grilling in the backyard gives you food that just plain tastes better.  No matter your reason for firing up your grill you can save money by making the right choices.

Learn how to save a little money when you take your dinner out to the grill. A few simple tips can help you save money now and in the long run by being informed about your purchases and your cooking, while helping to improve your outdoor cooking experience. To save money you need to be a smart consumer and a smart griller.

Gas grills typically cost more than charcoal grills, but they cost less to use. Assuming that it costs $15 to fill a 20 pound propane bottle that gives you 25 cookouts and that 20 pounds of charcoal runs around $10 and gives you three cookouts you will spend about $0.60 per every time you fire up the gas grill and around $3.50 on the charcoal grill. If you grilled every week you would spend $31.20 in propane or $182 on charcoal. Of course there is more to the Gas versus Charcoal debate than cost, but if you grill a lot gas is far more economical.

You can get a gas grill for under $100 or you can spend $10,000. Charcoal grills can be had for as little as $20 or over $2,000. There are many reasons for the difference in prices, but one of the most important is durability. The least expensive grills are simply not built to last. There is a common argument that if you paid $200 for a gas grill that lasted two years it would be just as cheap as spending $1,000 on a grill that lasted 10 years. But there is more to this argument than that. If you buy a cheap grill that flares-up, cooks uneven, and is unreliable you won't get as much enjoyment out of it. This will cause you to use it less, so you get less use than on a more expensive grill, meaning less value.

You can greatly reduce your fuel expense for your grill by avoiding excessive preheating. Most gas grills are ready to cook in 5 to 10 minutes, and most charcoal is ready in about 15 minutes. If you are ready to cook the second your grill is, and you turn your grill off as soon as you are done you can reduce your fuel consumption greatly. When using charcoal, only use as much as you absolutely need. Most grills will cook great on about 5 pounds of charcoal. It also helps if you have a charcoal grill that can be shut down. Conserve fuel and grill more.

Taste vs costs, the call is up to you.  Speaking of calls if you have an AC problem you should be calling Aaron’s Mechanical Service a call at 623-388-4436.

Getting Your Home Ready For Summer’s Heat

Now that the weather forecast predicts that the next five days are going to be over 100 degrees in the shade you may find out how ready your air conditioner is to handle the hot weather .  If your AC unit lets you down may we suggest that you consider Aaron’s Mechanical Service to help you deal with that problem.

You could also take this time to have us do an AC Tune up and help your unit be ready to handle this 100 plus that we are dealing with.  Let alone the coming 110 plus weather.

With our first summer holiday just a couple of weeks away we are all looking forward to the process of celebrating and shifting to summer mode.  That mode is spending weekends in our wonderful mountain areas.  Those cool high elevation climates give us a great weekend to enjoy.  But what is you plan for staying cool the rest of the week.  For most of us that means turning down our thermostats.

Are you sure your Air Conditioner is ready?

Here are some helpful tips to help you deal with this summer’s heat.

Keep heat out of your home by closing blinds, shades and draperies that cover windows facing the sun. Close coverings on east-facing windows in the morning and west-facing windows in the afternoon.  Also, installing shades or blinds that are white reflects heat away from the house.  This will keep you cooler and save energy.

Keep your outdoor air conditioning unit cooler by planting trees or shrubs that provide shade but still allow air to flow around unit.  By properly shading the area, your system can perform up to 10% more efficiently.  Also, be sure the landscaping isn’t too close to the unit, so a technician can service it easily when necessary.

Don’t let heat buildup in your home. Appliances, electronic devices and lighting are all common sources of internal heat gain.  To combat this excess heat, avoid putting lamps or televisions near your air conditioners thermostat.  These heat-exuding appliances cause the air conditioner to think the house is warmer than it really is, resulting in the system running longer than necessary and wasting energy.

Looking for a fast and fair company to work with for your air conditioning system repair and replacement give Aaron’s Mechanical Service a call and let us help you! Call 623-388-4436

Mother’s Day Coming On Sunday

Rather than remind you that Aaron’s Mechanical Service is the place to call for your Air Conditioning repair or replacement needs we thought we would take this day to remind you that Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday May 12th this year.

It can be argued that your mother is the most important person in your life.

No gift to your mother can ever equal her gift to you - life
~ Unkown

And a poem for Mother’s Day

The way I feel I can't explain
The gratitude inside
For all the days and all the nights
You spent right by my side

For every hug and every kiss
To send me on my way,
For always ..........

By Jessica Ashton

The earliest history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.

The modern roots of Mother's Day history can also be traced in UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US. However, the celebration of the festival as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work of the pioneering women of their times, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis that the day came into existence. Today the festival of Mothers day is celebrated across 46 countries and is a hugely popular affair. Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support and well wisher.

Seven Energy Saving Tips

AC Filters
Replace your AC filters regularly.  A dirty air filter is the #1 reason for HVAC system failure. A dirty filter restricts the air flow into your HVAC systems air handler. This restricted air flow places additional strain on the air handler fan motor and could, over time, burn out the motor and cause your system to overheat and ultimately fail. Filter replacement is a small price to pay to extend to life of one of the biggest financial investments in your home.

Fans Make You Comfortable
Use task area fans or ceiling fans to cool you a the temperature warms up.  Ceiling fans make you feel comfortable when it’s hot by warmer air over your body and increasing the evaporation, which is how the body cools itself. You feel the reaction just like a wind chill factor.

Don't Block Refrigerator Vents
The air that comes into your fridge and freezer comes through a vent on the inside.  Make sure you don’t place food or items in front of those vents, as the appliance will use more electricity if you do.

Turn Off Your Dishwasher Drying Cycle
Turn off the dish drying function of your dishwasher cycle and boost your savings account by letting your dishes dry naturally.

Never Run A Partial Dishwasher Load
If you have a full load then your dishwasher is more water and energy efficient, but if not, wash the few plates or mugs by hand.

Using Local Area Task Lighting
Table lamps will light just the space you are using, making them a much more efficient option than turning on all the numerous and larger overhead lights.

Use Energy Saving Bulbs Or Better Yet Turn Them Off
Turn Off Unused Lights Did Mom or Dad always remind you to turn off lights? It seems to be a habit  that is hard to remember.  It is one which can save you a fortune. Turing off the lights when you leave a room and when you go out makes financial sense, and should appeal to your common sense as well. Compared to general-service incandescent lamps giving the same amount of visible light, CFLs use one-fifth to one-third the electric power, and last eight to fifteen times longer.

Remember Saving Energy means Saving Money.  Have an Energy Saving question or need help with your Air Conditioning please call Aaron’s Mechanical Service at 623-388-4436.

Rheem Introduces a New More Efficient Water Heater

Did you know that Rheem recently unveiled the new High-Efficiency Condensing Power Direct Vent (PDV) Water Heater. This ENERGY STAR® qualified water heater is the first in the industry to employ high-efficiency condensing technology in a residential tank design.

The Rheem High-Efficiency Condensing PDV unit achieves a 0.80 Energy Factor (EF), which is the highest EF available today for residential tank-type water heaters. Most typical gas-fired storage water heaters have a 0.59 EF and even ones that are Residential ENERGY STAR (Version 2.0)-qualified are only required to have a 0.67 EF (source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).

Rheem’s existing water heating platform leverages high-efficiency condensing technology in the company’s Prestige™ Series line of tankless gas water heaters, and in certain commercial products like  he Rheem SPIDERfire ® line of commercial water heaters. In the High Efficiency Condensing PDV model, the main flue is capped at the top of the unit. It forces gases down through a proprietary five-coil submerged heat exchanger, which loops around the center flue. The process keeps flue gas in contact with water for a longer period of time, meaning that more heat is transferred to the water.

Because the High-Efficiency Condensing PDV Water Heater delivers more heat to the water and less heat exhausts from the vent. The cooler flue gases permit venting through low-cost 2- or 3-inch PVC piping. The use of PVC simplifies the installation process for the contractor and saves the homeowner costs in venting, components, and installation.

This new Rheem helps you save money in two ways and to be more environmentally friendly at the same time.

Arizona Places: Arcosanti

Arcosanti is an urban laboratory focused on innovative design, community, and environmental accountability. Our goal is to actively pursue lean alternatives to urban sprawl based on Paolo Soleri's theory of compact city design, Arcology (architecture + ecology).

Built by over 7,000 volunteers since the commencement of the project in 1970, Arcosanti provides various mixed-use buildings and public spaces where people live, work, visit, and participate in educational and cultural programs.

In 1965, Paolo Soleri (1919 - April 9, 2013) and his late wife, Colly, incorporated the Cosanti Foundation, a not-for-profit educational organization devoted to the support of Soleri's noted architectural and urban planning research.

Today, the primary areas of the Foundation's work are:

Educating students, design professionals, urban planners, and the general public about Soleri's architectural concepts and philosophy.

Ensuring the continuing construction of Arcosanti, according to the Arcology concept. This has been the main ongoing project of the Cosanti Foundation since 1970.

Mission:

The Cosanti Foundation exists to promote the concept of Arcology developed by Paolo Soleri as an Urban Alternative, through educational programs, exhibits, and most importantly, through the construction of Arcosanti as an experiential example of the concept. We expect Cosanti Foundation will develop its urban laboratory prototype Arcosanti as a scalable demonstration of an alternative urban experience and will become a lean urban research and development center.

Values:

Essential to the Foundation's success in achieving its mission is to value creative resourcefulness in planning and execution of our lean alternative programs.

Hosting educational and cultural conferences, as well as performing arts events, on a regular basis.

Location:  Arcosanti is located 1½ miles Northeast of Arcosanti Road (exit 263) on I-17, near Cordes Junction, 65 miles North of Phoenix AZ - 928.533.8295

When:  9am - 5pm, 7 days a week.  Arcosanti is closed on major holidays
