Category 1 Hurricane Strength Wind in Phoenix AZ Microburst

Near 53rd Avenue on Greenway Road
Did you read that the National Weather Service mentioned that the Microbursts that hit the Valley of the Sun may have contained wind speeds that were in the eighty mile per hour range?  You might find the following fact interesting. This will mean more to the folks whose streets and yards were filled with storm debris. So if you felt that this was a major wind event on 09/27/2014 you were correct.

The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane's sustained wind speed. This scale estimates potential property damage. Category 1 and 2 storms are still dangerous, however, and require preventative measures. In the western North Pacific, the term "super typhoon" is used for tropical cyclones with sustained winds exceeding 150 mph.

Category 1 wind speed rating is 74-95 mph. Very dangerous winds will produce some damage: Well-constructed frame homes could have damage to roof, shingles, vinyl siding, gutters and fences. Large branches of trees will snap and shallowly rooted trees may be toppled. Extensive damage to power lines and poles likely will result in power outages that could last a few to several days. Yep, that describes the damage that ran from just north of Thunderbird to near Bell Road and from about 55th Avenue to 67th Avenue.

Many folks suffered wind-blown debris damage to their air conditioners, HVACs and cooling systems as well.

We help make your home comfortable by bringing you Quality Work, Fair Prices and perhaps most important as quickly as possible.  That is why we are known for AC Repair – Fast and Fair!

Did You Know?

Is a tornado and a microburst related or even comparable?

The Fujita scale (F-Scale), or Fujita–Pearson scale, is a scale for rating tornado intensity, based primarily on the damage tornadoes inflict on human-built structures and vegetation.

F0 tornado = 40 - 72 mph Light damage. Some damage to chimneys; branches broken off trees; shallow-rooted trees pushed over; sign boards damaged.

F1 tornado = 73 - 112 Moderate damage. The lower limit is the beginning of hurricane wind speed; peels surface off roofs; mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned; moving autos pushed off the roads; attached garages may be destroyed.

While we didn’t have a tornado the microburst did damage that is comparable to what happens in an F0 or lower range F1 tornado.

Wow, What A Wind! Our Neighbors AC Unit Is In The Street!

With three one-hundred year storms in six weeks, does it seem like we should stop calling them 100 year storms?

We sure hope that your property survived without storm damage and your family wasn’t part of the 100,000 (yes, that is one-hundred-thousand) APS and SRP customers that were without power following Saturday afternoon’s storm.  It almost seemed like a couple of storms passed through during the afternoon. Then very early Sunday morning more lightning and thunder shook us awake again. I would mention how much rain we got but, my rain gauge was attached to the fence section that blew down.

We have mentioned before that following major storms, wind driven debris, water and power service interruptions it is a very good idea to have your air conditioner, HVAC or cooling system inspected and repaired before continued running can lead to further damage. An AC Unit that is used while it isn’t running correctly can lead to high than normal power bills.

We help make your home comfortable by bringing you Quality Work, Fair Prices and perhaps most important as quickly as possible.  That is why we are known for AC Repair – Fast and Fair!

Sky Harbor International Airport set another rainfall record on Saturday September 27th, 2014

Sky Harbor had to evacuate the Control Tower for an hour due to high winds.

No take-offs or landings (called a ground stop) were allowed from 2:30pm till just after 3:30pm

The Phoenix Fire department received 400 weather related calls from noon to 4:30

Nearly two miles of 59th Avenue remain closed from storm damage as of Monday morning. One mile of Greenway Road is closed in the same area. Homes, businesses and schools are affected.

Both Interstate 10 and 17 had closures during the storm.

Some folks who had suffered damage from the first two major storms suffered more damage from the third one-hundred year storm.

Does this mean that we won’t have any more one-hundred year storms for the next two hundred years because we have used up our quota?

103 Degrees and Low Humidity - Time For Swamp Coolers?

Today, September 25rd 2014, and we will see a daytime high of 103° F.  Perhaps more importantly the dew point will be lower at 57 degrees,  Our humidity today will be in the 30 percent range so we are getting more toward our dry heat feeling that the Phoenix Metro area is famous for.

Yes, our monsoon season is winding down. While the daytime highs, on average, will still be high eighties and nineties the air will dry-out and cooling for air conditioners or even evaporative coolers will be easier.

Some folks use piggy-back systems that combine the best of their air conditioners and a evaporative cooler for days when the dew point is lower than 55 degrees.

The swamp coolers cost much less to operate when compared to an air conditioner. When the humidity is low some folks say that an evaporative cooler feels better to them than an air conditioner.

Having a lower energy bill may color that view of comfort as well. But, evaporative coolers have several downsides. They require much more maintenance than AC Units.  Since they use a wet media to achieve the cooling effect water leakage can cause many problems.

Moist air moving through the air ducts and over the control surfaces (that switch over when going from AC to Evap mode) can have rust and calcium build-up which can cause additional issues.

Some folks suffer from mold issues after years of using evaporative coolers, though the manufacturers claim that well maintained Evap systems are not the cause.

The Environmental Protection Agency recommends between 30 and 60 percent humidity in a house to keep down mold and mildew, and the humid air may keep your wooden furniture from drying out. Unfortunately, it can also cause metal to rust, even in the swamp cooler itself. The problem of excess humidity can be solved in evaporative coolers by using a heat exchanger to heat air inside the house while the humid air vents to the outside, but these systems are considerably less efficient (and much more expensive) than direct evaporative coolers.

The media (pads) needs to be cleaned or changed regularly to avoid that swampy smell and associated problems with air quality. Minerals in the water can also build up as water evaporates, requiring a bleed-off of mineral-rich wastewater over time. The coolers also require a steady supply of water -- 3.5 to 10.5 gallons an hour, according to the National Association of Home Builders. That can be a tall order in the hot, dry climates where swamp coolers function best.

Many people are concerned with the additional water usage from evaporative cooler while we are well into a multi-year drought.

Cool Arizona Places: Biosphere 2

Sometimes it is hard to plan what you want to do on the weekend.  Today, September 24th 2014 we will see one-hundred-four degrees Fahrenheit for this afternoon’s high temperature. Yet we expect to see cooling and possibly rain this weekend. Within a few days we could see as much as a ten degree drop in the high temperature.

It is way too early for the state to see much in the way of fall colors. So this may just be a great weekend to do something indoors.

Biosphere 2 is located north of Tucson, Arizona at the base of the stunning Santa Catalina Mountains. This one-of-a-kind facility sits on a ridge at a cool elevation of nearly 4,000 feet and is surrounded by a magnificent natural desert preserve. Experience the remarkable Biosphere 2 which Time Life Books recently named one of the 50 must see "Wonders of the World". See why visitors from around the globe journey here for this unique adventure not found anywhere else. The visitor center houses exhibits and multi-media displays along with a Bookstore and Cafe. You won't want to miss their new feature movie which describes the past, present and future of the project. Your entry into Biosphere 2 is led by an interpretive specialist who takes you inside and under-the-glass.

Their beautiful trail system takes you on a once in a lifetime tour that lets you smell the indoor ocean and see a tropical Rainforest up close. In addition to escorting you through the upper Biomes, your interpretive specialist takes you through the basement “technosphere” and into the amazing lungs that helped moderate air pressure in the sealed environment in the past. Your tour will conclude in the custom-built underwater ocean viewing gallery where you can explore the million-gallon ocean and its real coral reef. Before or after your tour, take time to enjoy the many different programs or events that are offered throughout the season. The tour provides an opportunity to appreciate and discuss science in a friendly, informal setting.  Your experience will be like no other!

They offer tours daily from 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  You need to arrive no later than 3:45 p.m. for the last tour of the day.  The tours currently depart every 30 to 45 minutes.  It is not necessary to book a reservation for groups with 20 people or less upon arrival you will be assigned to the next available general tour.

Tour Considerations: The under-the-glass walking tour of Biosphere 2 consists of approximately 150 stairs (up and down) and the route is just under one mile to walk round-trip.

Official First Day Of Fall in Phoenix Arizona It Is Only 104 Degrees

Today, September 23rd 2014, is the official first day of Fall and the Valley of the Sun has the sounds of millions of Air Conditioners running full-out battling the one-hundred-four degrees Fahrenheit.  I know, the Phoenix Metro area, sets in the middle of the southwestern desert and that means a very hot climate.  In point of fact one of the local television stations uses the term “sizzling” when they talk about our temperatures.

The National Weather Service has today’s average temperature listed at only “98” degrees.  I have mentioned before that may sound like a cool-down to us, but ninety-eight degrees Fahrenheit  is a hot summer day in nearly all of the United States.

So, can I take a moment and ask if you are considering air conditioning repair about now?  You aren’t thinking of putting it off till spring are you? AC is still needed and depending on age, health and body type you are going to need you’re A/C unit running well for the next forty-five to sixty days.  Yes, I know that means well into November.  Don’t forget that they call this wonderful place, where we live and work, the Valley of the Sun.

We help make your home comfortable by bringing you Quality Work, Fair Prices and perhaps most important as quickly as possible.  That is why we are known for AC Repair – Fast and Fair!

Call Aaron’s Mechanical Services at 623-388-4436 and find out how we can serve your Air Conditioning needs.

Cold Hard Facts That May Cool You Off

“Snow rollers” are rare, large snowballs formed naturally as chunks of snow are blown about by the wind.

Snow reflects a high level of ultraviolet radiation and can cause photokeratitis (snow blindness). Sunglasses, goggles and other eye protection help absorb these ultraviolet rays.

The highest snowfall ever recorded in a one year period was 1,224 inches (over 100 feet) in Mount Rainier, Washington State, between February 19, 1971 and February 18, 1972.  Makes me very glad we don’t have to shovel sunshine.

On April 4, 1986, Bangladesh was hit by the biggest hailstones ever recorded over 2 pounds each killing 92 people.

It has already snowed in 8 states in the last thirty days.

If It Is Fall in Phoenix Arizona Why Is My AC Running?

Officially Fall starts tomorrow September 22nd 2014. The National Weather Service forecast, in the Phoenix Metro Area, for this week sounds like very hot summer days for the rest of the United States cities.

Here is the week’s temperatures we have to look forward to:
Monday September 22 – one-hundred degrees Fahrenheit
Tuesday September 23 – one-hundred-two degrees Fahrenheit
Wednesday September 24 – one-hundred-four degrees Fahrenheit
Thursday September 25 – one-hundred-three degrees Fahrenheit
Friday September 26 – Thirty-seven point 2 degrees Celsius (Sorry, I had to sneak that in) 99°

You would find that if you asked any other cities’ residents about ninety-nine degrees they say that is a very hot summer day and not what would happen in late September, even in Phoenix.

So that is the reason for the next thirty days or so we are still going to rely on our air conditioners to keep our homes, business and offices cool and comfortable.

Yes, I know this is same reason we can be out in short-sleeves and shorts barbequing grilling in January.

To be comfortable and safe in the Valley of the Sun an efficient well running AC Unit is a must. We want that to be as easy as possible for you and one phone call to 623-388-4436 will get us on our way to your home.

Did You Know?

Record High September Temperature 116° Sept. 1st 1950

Record High January Temperature 84° Jan. 9th 1923

No matter how long that I stare at the cactus in my front lawn they just never change to beautiful fall colors. I guess not having leaves at all is the problem.

AC Repair for the Phoenix Metro Area

If you have gone online and you have done a Google Search for “AC Repair” you get the following message… About 371,000,000 results (0.55 seconds) Now just what are you supposed to do with that many responses?

The top three are paid ads and on the right side are twelve more paid ads.  Is either of those the best way to find a company to do your AC Repair?

What that leaves are the Google Results that are called “Organic” listings, that is from the fourth listing on down.  If you look very, very close you will see a thin line that separates the ads on top from the listing of companies that have found their way into the search results.

And not just online are the AC Repair results confusing.  While the use of the Yellow Pages have declined over the years a few people still use them.  Hundreds of companies are listed in the pages as well.  It is truly a matter of who do you trust and how soon will they get there?  The last thing you want is to be waiting in 100 degrees plus weather only to find that you time for AC Repair has come and gone and the promised tech is no-where to be seen.

You can ask your neighbors, friends, family, co-workers and even complete strangers for their advice and recommendations for AC Repair.  You can use one of the many review and advice sites that feature an AC Repair category and see what is written there.  You know this would be great if you could truly trust what is written there.  People who have a gripe are more likely to leave a complaint that a satisfied person is likely to leave praise.  It is harsh to say but many reviews aren’t real either. Just people who are pumping in false claims.

So is online the best way to get a good result for AC Repair.  Well perhaps we have to admit it is the only way.  But remember to do your homework and ask lots of questions.

Are they listed with the AZ Registrar of Contractors?

How long have they been in business?

It doesn’t work to ask for references … will they give you a bad one?

Do they take time to help on the phone or is it take a number and will call you back?.  (In reality that can happen sometimes even with good companies)

Can we just recommend that you call Aaron’s Mechanical Services at 623-388-4436 to start with and save you some time!

ENERGY STAR Ratings Can Help Make Your Heating and Cooling Cost You Less

While we are still deep in the summer cooling season and air conditioning repairs and new units are still a real possibility will have added heating (HVAC) information to this Aaron’s Mechanical Services ENERGY STAR update.

It is a fact that replacing older AC units and heating systems will save you money when their Energy Star ratings are better.

You can also apply and use Energy Star ratings when considering new appliances. Look for the bright yellow label. Look for the ENERGY STAR label to save money on your energy bills and help protect our environment.

Here are three tips from the Energy Star people.

Look for ENERGY STAR — ENERGY STAR qualified products meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and offer significant long-term energy savings. Contractors should be able to show you calculations of savings for ENERGY STAR heating and cooling equipment.

Get the ENERGY STAR Guide — For complete information on keeping your home comfortable year-round, get the ENERGY STAR Guide to Energy Efficient Cooling and Heating PDF (2.6 MB) en espanol — Guía para la Eficiencia de Energía en la Calefacción y el Aire Acondicionado PDF (2.5MB) or 1-888-STAR-YES (1-888-782-7937).

Cool Arizona Places: Explore Wickenburg

Jail Tree- Wickenburg’s 200 Year Old Jail Tree was chosen as
an Official AZ Centennial Witness Tree.
Just 60 miles northwest of the Phoenix Metro area (closer if you live in the north valley) is our neighboring small community of Wickenburg. Wickenburg is noted for its clean air, good country living, western hospitality and all-around high quality of life. It is a true oasis in the Sonoran Desert.

The Wickenburg area with much of the Southwest became part of the United States by the 1848 treaty that ended the Mexican-American War. The first extensive survey was conducted by Gila Rangers who were pursuing hostile Indians who had raided the Butterfield Overland Mail route and attacked miners at Gila City.

It is a short drive along Highway 60 to this small community of just over five thousand folks.

Attractions

The Desert Caballeros Western Museum is Celebrating its 54th year, the Desert Caballeros Western Museum is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the history and art of Arizona and the west. It takes pride in being one of the best small museums in Arizona. The permanent collection includes Native American Indian and 19th-century decorative arts, as well as late 19th-21st – century Western American paintings and sculpture. The Museum’s public programming includes exhibitions, lectures, workshops, art classes and tours. See their web site for hours and admissions fees. www.westernmuseum.org

Hassayampa River Preserve is a special piece of Arizona’s natural environment is being protected and restored at the Hassayampa River Preserve near Wickenburg.

For most of its 100-mile course through the desert, the Hassayampa River flows only underground. But within the preserve its crystal clear waters emerge, flowing above ground throughout the year. The lush streamside habitat of the Hassayampa is home to some of the desert’s most spectacular wildlife.

Yet many of them have become dangerously imperiled as riparian areas have disappeared from the Arizona landscape. Spring-fed Palm Lake is a unique four-acre pond and marsh habitat. The marshy pond habitat attracts an impressive array of water birds such as the great blue heron, white-faced ibis, and pied-billed grebe. The large willows around the lake provide important nesting habitat for the endangered southwestern willow flycatcher.

Is Your A/C System Ready For Remnant Storms From Hurricane Odile?

The National Weather Service warning about hurricane, Odile, that battered Mexico’s Baja coast, and its outer bands of rain is arriving in the Phoenix Metro Area, (perhaps the entire state of Arizona) as rain begins to fall Tuesday afternoon September 16th and is expected to last until Wednesday or even Thursday and perhaps into early Friday.

After reaching Category 4 strength Sunday, Odile was downgraded to Category 3. But it was still a major storm that brought high winds, storm surge, deadly surf, heavy rains, mudslides and much property destruction to Los Cabos and parts of the mainland, and forecasters said it could strengthen again as it moves north along the west coast.

Still, the weakened storm is expected to send more rain to the flood-prone southwest U.S. Flash watches were issued in parts of southern California, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas. Mexico is bracing for another tropical storm which is expected to become a hurricane by the time it hits the southwestern coast of the country later this week. Tropical Storm Polo is expected to stay south of Baja California peninsula, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Yes, the Valley of the Sun need the rainfall, but not so much all at one time.

Make sure you stay up-to-date with the local news and weather forecasts so your family can remain safe and protected. Storms don’t know they are supposed to do and what time frame the weather men are saying on television.

If you are traveling in the next few days pay special attention to your schedule to make sure flight cancellations and road closures won’t be changing your plans.

Mexican military and private aircraft began airlifting stranded tourists from popular resort area of Los Cabos Tuesday, after Hurricane Odile slammed the Baja California peninsula and ravaged the vacation destination, flooding homes, damaging mega-resort hotels and sending debris into an airport terminal.

The first flight left for Tijuana with 44 passengers aboard. The Mexican government on Monday said damage from the tropical storm that struck Sunday and Monday had stranded some 30,000 tourists, including 26,000 foreign visitors, in Los Cabos. Odile was downgraded to a tropical storm an is expected to be reduced to a tropical depression by Wednesday.

Did You Know?

You can’t turn off the electrical power to your air conditioner by just turning your thermostat from “Cool” to “Off”.

If your AC is a ground mounted unit make sure to shut off the power to it, if your yard begins to flood.  You would do that at your electrical panel where your breakers are located.  If your panel is inside that is ok, but, with older homes, if it is located on the outside, NEVER touch or open during a rainstorm.

If your Air Conditioner is on your roof it is generally safe from damage from flooding but wind and branches can wreak havoc on it.

Is Your A/C System Ready For The Next Round Of Storms!

Yes, the days are getting cooler with every passing twenty-four hour period.  But, the highs are still in the high nineties and even the low one-hundreds. That is too warm (i.e. read hot) to be comfortable and even safe for people with a compromised medical condition.  You still need an efficient air conditioning system.

Did your air conditioner suffer any damage from the last two storms?  I sure hope not. But if they did we are here to help.  Just give Aaron’s Mechanical Services a call at 623-388-4436 and we are ready to come and help with a great solution.

Now, the National Weather Service is warning that the powerful category 3 hurricane, Odile, that is battering Mexico’s Baja coast, is heading north and will bring much rain and possible flooding to the Phoenix Metro Area, (perhaps in the entire state of Arizona) starting as early as late Tuesday night and running until Wednesday or even into Thursday and into Friday.

After reaching Category 4 strength Sunday, Odile was downgraded to Category 3. But it was still a major storm that threatened to bring high winds, deadly surf and heavy rains to Baja and parts of the mainland, and forecasters said it could strengthen again as it approached land.

No, you can’t turn off the electrical power to your air conditioner by turning your thermostat from “Cool” to “Off”.

Looking for fast and fair AC Repair? Aaron’s Mechanical Services wants you to stay comfortable all year round.  Most important we want you to spend the least amount of money possible while you stay comfortable. If your air conditioning system or HVAC unit needs service or replacement please think of us and call at 623-388-4436 and we will come to you and solve your cooling Unit service needs.

Aaron’s Mechanical Services Remembers 9/11

Did a news story trigger your memory that today was different than any other day? Did you look at the calendar and see that today, Thursday September 11th, 2014, was the thirteenth anniversary of the attack by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City, Washington, D.C. and in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Did you awake with a feeling that today was a memory that would be with you forever?

On that day, a Tuesday, nearly 3,000 victims perished as the result of terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and what was thought to be the White House by the plane that the heroic passengers fought to regain and was forcibly crashed by the highjackers. These events caused at least $10 billion in property and infrastructure damage.

Four passenger airliners were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists so they could be flown into buildings in the cowardly attacks. Two of those planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were crashed into the North and South towers, respectively, of the World Trade Center complex in New York City.

Within two hours, both towers collapsed with debris and the resulting fires causing partial or complete collapse of all other buildings in the WTC complex, as well as significant damage to ten other large surrounding structures.

A third plane, also American Airlines, Flight 77 was crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense), leading to a partial collapse in its western side.

The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was targeted at Washington, D.C., but crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, after its passengers tried to valiantly overcome the hijackers.

The destruction of the Twin Towers and other properties caused serious damage to the economy of Lower Manhattan and had a significant effect on global markets, closing Wall Street until September 17 and the civilian airspace in the U.S. and Canada until September 13.

Many closings, evacuations, and cancellations followed the attack, either out of fear of further attacks or respect for the tragedy. Cleanup of the World Trade Center site was completed in May 2002, and the Pentagon was repaired within a year. Numerous memorials have been constructed, including the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York, the Pentagon Memorial, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania.

For many of us the events of 9/11 are seared into our memory. Are you old enough to remember those horrific events?

The skyline of New York City and the collective consciousness of the world changed that day and the future was forever altered.

"Now, we have inscribed a new memory alongside those others. It’s a memory of tragedy and shock, of loss and mourning. But not only of loss and mourning. It’s also a memory of bravery and self-sacrifice, and the love that lays down its life for a friend–even a friend whose name it never knew." -- President George W. Bush

Cool Arizona Places: Fishing This Weekend?

We hope this finds you with your home and work now on dry ground and without much in the way of storm damage. While the Valley of the Sun will be a fairly cool (but very humid) one-hundred-three degrees Fahrenheit this weekend going up north will bring very nice cool weather.

Flagstaff is expected to be in the mid-seventies during the peak afternoon highs and the nights a cool fiftyish or so. Now that is a cool down I can really enjoy.

If you are stuck here in the Phoenix Metro area this weekend I sure hope you can use air conditioning to keep you cool and have it also dry out a bit of our humidity. If you need AC Repair we sure hope you think to call Aaron’s Mechanical Services at 623-388-4436. We will be there same day if we can.

The beautiful Sedona, Cottonwood and Jerome areas will be mid-eighties during the afternoon highs and the nights a very nice sixtyish or so. So either area can give you a real break from our heat.

If you are an avid hiker there are plenty of trails whether you stop around Sedona or go on up to Flagstaff. For fishing you may just want to consider the Upper Lake Mary Area.

Lake Mary is the largest of Flagstaff's twin lakes. It is also the one farthest from town. This long, narrow impoundment is especially popular with power boaters and water skiers because there is no motor size limit on it. But it's also popular with those who prefer people power or windpower over horsepower. For that reason, you're liable to see everything from jet boats to rubber rafts, canoes and sailboats all sharing this same body of water.

A lot of people come here to fish, too. The lake has northern pike, channel cat, crappie and some trout. Lake Mary Narrows Recreation Area provides excellent access facilities for disabled anglers by means of paved lakeshore ramps. Two developed campgrounds, Lake View and Pine Grove are nearby. There are two paved boat ramps at the parking area with picnic tables/ ramadas and barbeque grills and toilets. You'll find a lakeside picnic area and another boat ramp at Lake Mary Narrows further south-east in addition to its paved fishing access ramps.

Location: 12 miles southeast of Flagstaff on a paved road. Elevation is 7,000 feet. FS Road 3

Does Home Owners Insurance Pay For AC Repair or Replacement?

Following a major storm many home owners are left asking the question, “What will my home owners insurance cover?”

First this question should be addressed to your insurance agent or broker “Before” you suffer storm damage. You don’t want to find out you aren’t covered after a storm and the resulting damage has already happened.

Accidents and weather related damages do occur. When they do, homeowners insurance usually pay.

When appliances in the home wear out, homeowners insurance does not pay. This general rule applies to furnaces and air conditioning units.

The reason for replacement dictates whether insurance companies pay claims. Insurance pays when a tree falls in a storm and strikes an outdoor unit. Insurance does not pay when the same unit stops working after 10 years.

Wear-and-tear does not make the list of perils covered under the typical homeowner’s insurance policy. Wear-and-tear is simple. Furnaces and air conditioning units wear out. Constant use of the parts leads to unit failure. Parts must be replaced, and eventually so does the unit. Homeowners insurance does not pay for these losses.

The hard part can be the discovery of the cause of failure needs to be verified. An air conditioner can fail as the result of storm damage with no apparent physical damage showing.  The amount your insurance may pay can be based on the age of your AC Unit.

Dependent on your policy coverages and conventions deductibles may be applied to the repair or replacement dollar amount.

An outdoor unit like an air conditioner or heat pump is susceptible to wind and storm damage which is among the listed perils of a homeowner’s insurance policy. Besides fallen trees, high winds toss objects through the air and tear parts of a home loose. Any of these striking the unit could damage it too much to be repaired. The homeowner would be entitled to a new air conditioner, HVAC or heat pump.

After any type of storm damage you should call your insurance company to find out their procedures that you need to follow so that they will actually pay for the repairs that are made. Make sure that you have the choice of contractors that do the repair rather than being forced to use one that is “approved” by the insurer.

Record Storm Brings the Need For AC Repair

As this is written, September, 8th 2014 at 10:00 AM the Phoenix Metro Area is in between storms and we have set records for rainfall in the last twenty-four hours.

At Phoenix Sky Harbor International airport they have broken the all-time twenty-four hour record with 3.29 inches of rainfall so far and more rain is expected later today.

Other parts of the Valley of the Sun have received much more rainfall with Chandler leading the pack at 5.2 inches.

In some places the rainfall has brought their yearly total to above average in just two storms in the last few weeks.  Folks all across the valley spent many hours watching the storm as it flooded the valley during the night and into the early morning hours.

The local Television stations have been hard pressed to keep up with the road and school closures, as well as reports of business and home damage as they come in from across the area. The TV news choppers were grounded by the storm until mid-morning. At 10:30 AM the Mayor of Phoenix has declared an Emergency.

Modern air conditioners rely on many new technologies to help keep you cool and comfortable while using less energy. With the very heavy rainfall and lots of lightening during the storm may have lead to damage on many AC Units.  That type of storm damage doesn’t always show up as a complete failure.

If your unit seems to be struggling to keep you cool and the humidity in check it could be a sign of problems that are related to storm damage.  If you have questions feel free to give us a call. If need be we can do a service call on your home to get you running again.

Did You Know?

Weather records for the Phoenix area are taken from Sky Harbor International Airport.

Record Rainfall for September 4.77 inches in 1939 (September 2014 will likely break this record.)

The record high temperature in September was 116 degrees Fahrenheit on September 1st 1950

The record low temperature for September is 47 degrees on the 20th in 1965

Did You Know?

The basic concept behind air conditioning is said to have been applied in ancient Egypt, where reeds were hung in windows and were moistened with trickling water. The evaporation of water cooled the air blowing through the window. This process also made the air more humid, which can be beneficial in a dry desert climate. In Ancient Rome, water from aqueducts was circulated through the walls of certain houses to cool them. Other techniques in medieval Persia involved the use of cisterns and wind towers to cool buildings during the hot season.

Modern air conditioning emerged from advances in chemistry during the 19th century, and the first large-scale electrical air conditioning was invented and used in 1902 by American inventor Willis Carrier. The introduction of residential air conditioning in the 1920s helped enable the great population migration to our Sun Belt states.
