Does Paying More = Saving More?

When it comes to energy efficiency and your electrical bill it sure can.  When you purchase a new air conditioner one with a higher SEER rating can cool more efficiency and use less energy which saves you money on your power bill.

Today new AC units also saves money by having different run models so they only use as much power as needed to produce the right amount of cooling to match the temperature, umidity and heat load.

One unit that does this is the Trane XL20i Air Conditioner

These are one of the industry’s most efficient air conditioners. Built to stand up to the elements and deliver reliable cooling, even on the hottest day of the year, and lowering your cooling costs at the same time.

They feature:

Comfort-R™ innovation
When matched with a variable speed indoor unit from Trane, the XL20i has another special feature. Its a method of enhancing airflow that we call Comfort-R™ and it gives you greater humidity control in cooling. This is accomplished by running the fan at a slower speed during start-up. Comfort-R™ also provides warmer air during heating start-up. These managed cycles reduce temperature variances for the optimum in home comfort.

Efficient performance
The XL20i’s SEER rating of up to 20.00 is among the highest energy efficiency rating of any air conditioner available today. The XL20i has two compressors: one for milder weather and a second larger compressor for those extremely hot days. It’s like having two units in one.

ComfortLink™ II communicating capability
ComfortLink™ II communicating technology, when matched with communicating indoor units, connects all of your key components so your system automatically charges, configures and calibrates for optimal performance and efficiency through the lifetime of your products. ComfortLink™ II communicating control also offers remote access via smart phone or internet*.

Durable, quiet and economical
Increased efficiency may substantially lower your home cooling costs. Its fan motor adjusts speed to quietly provide maximum comfort, and materials for all components are tested again and again for long-lasting performance and durability.

Cleaner, healthier indoor air
Add Trane CleanEffects™ to your system for advanced air filtration that removes more dust, pollen and other irritants from conditioned air for a cleaner, healthier, more comfortable home.

AZ Places: Cool Off In Jerome, Arizona

Located high on top of Cleopatra Hill (5,200 feet) between Prescott and Flagstaff is the historic copper mining town of Jerome, Arizona. Once known as the wickedest town in the west, Jerome was a copper mining camp, growing from a settlement of tents to a roaring mining community. Four disastrous fires destroyed large sections of the town during its early history, resulting in the incorporation of the City of Jerome in 1899.

Jerome's personality has changed dramatically in the past 30 years. Once a thriving mining camp between the late-1880s and early 1950s, Jerome is now a bustling tourist magnet and artistic community with a population of about 450. It includes a modicum of artists, craft people, musicians, writers, hermits, bed and breakfast owners, museum caretakers, gift shop proprietors and fallen-down-building landlords.

What is the Town of Jerome like today? Is it worth your time to visit? The answer is a resounding yes! Jerome is an enchanting town, and a photographer's paradise. From its external appearances it hasn't changed much in nearly 100 years. Many of the buildings used by present-day business folks are those built after the fires of 1894 and1899. A number of the buildings have been restored and more are planned for restoration. Due to the 30-degree incline of the mountainside, gravity has pulled a number of buildings down the slope. To the delight of some, one of those buildings was the town's jail. Those buildings still standing make for interesting visiting and with a little research you can find their historical significance. One notable section is the "Cribs District." You will find this area across the street from the English Kitchen, in a back alley where all the buildings were are part of Jerome's ill-famed "prostitution row.

Jerome is located in the heart of northern Arizona only 90 miles from Phoenix, 60 miles from Flagstaff, 20 miles from Sedona, 30 miles from Prescott, 20 miles from Camp Verde, 10 miles from Cottonwood and about 6 miles from Clarkdale.

Once in Jerome, there are many things to see and do. Why not check out the many unique shops in Jerome, or relax and have a bit to eat at one of our many restaurants, listen to some great music at one of our saloons or sit and relax with a glass of wine at Jerome's own Jerome Winery.

Time For AC Money Saving Tips

As we see the Phoenix Metro area begin to climb past the 110 mark (and stay there or above) we want to help you remember that you can save money on your electricity costs.  See if you have done all of these money saving tips.

Perform regular maintenance on your air conditioning unit. Replace the filter monthly during the cooling season and have a professional service your system at the beginning of each cooling season.

Install a programmable thermostat so you can vary the temperature according to when you're home. Set it to 78 degrees when you're home. If you'll be gone for more than a few hours, it makes sense to set the air conditioning at 85 degrees while you're gone.

Putting reflective window tint or shade screens on your windows to reduce the amount of heat absorbed.

Use heavy drapes and keep them closed on the sun side of your house.

Sealing up air leaks in your house will reduce your air conditioning costs as well as heating costs.

Any heat that's generated inside your home has to be removed by your cooling system, so avoid generating heat inside your home whenever possible. Cook on your outdoor grill as often as possible, or use a crockpot and the microwave oven. Use the 'air dry' setting on your dishwasher.

Close off rooms that you aren't using and close the cooling ducts to those rooms.

Make sure the cooled air coming from your air conditioning vents is not obstructed by furniture,  draperies or partial open doors.

Turn off lights when not in use. Lights produce heat, which makes your air conditioning system work harder.

Your computer, home office and media equipment also generate heat. Turn them off when not in use.

Fair Prices and Fast Service

If fair prices and fast service is what you are looking for when you call a company looking for repair of your Air Conditioner then you will be happy to know that at Aaron’s Mechanical Service that is our goal; to give you Fair Prices and Fast Service when it comes to repairing or replacing your AC Unit.

It is always good when the customer and the company doing the work can agree on a good, common goal when it comes to getting work done on your HVAC products.

We always try to do the best work possible to keep your future AC problems to a minimum.  Our recommendations are always along that line of thinking do the best job and at the best price for that work.

Sometimes customers have a certain price in mind.  Perhaps they remember when a unit was repaired years ago.  Several things can enter into a repair’s cost.

First and foremost what it takes to do the repair.  While symptoms can be the same the actual repair can be very different depending on the real underlying problem.  A unit that is not working at all can be everything from a simple “fuse based” problem to the failure of the compressor.

The fair price for a fuse replacement is vastly different from a compressor replacement.  Even when the same part is being replaced one purchased with 2012 dollars will be more expensive than one purchased with 2002 dollars.  The cost of doing business today (think insurance and fuel as examples) may even mean that the labor cost has risen as well.

We will always be on our customer side when it comes to the repairs.  We understand both the need for an efficient AC unit to the actual cost of repair as well.

We are never the one making claims about cheap prices (which usually means low quality work) but fast and fair prices… yes that is a good description of Aaron’s Mechanical Service.  Give us a call to get started solving your AC headaches. That’s 623-388-4436, Thanks

Insurance and Air Conditioning Contractors

You do want to make sure that you hire AC Contractors that are Arizona Licensed Contractors because they are legally bound to stand behind their workmanship for one year and structural integrity for two years

But you should also consider that they are also insured to protect you from the affects of damage that could occur during a typical repair or replacement.

There are two types of insurances a contractor should carry;  Liability and workman’s compensation (Workman's comp)  Liability is the most important of the two.

A contractor or his worker, while working on your property can get hurt by accident without warning.  If an injury occurs, then you as the property owner would be liable in the way of legal fees and a lawsuit.

Don't be fooled by cheaper prices, there are risks involved. Hiring a good fully insured contractor will lessen the risks!

Other Notable Facts: A supplier who sells materials on credit to an unlicensed contractor for your property can lien YOUR property and or sue you for the amount of the materials if those bills aren't paid?  Also sub-contractors / workers who work on your property for an unlicensed contractor have the option of suing the property owner (you)  for wages due them but never paid out by the hired unlicensed contractor.

The recovery fund benefit is not available to homeowners using unlicensed contractors!  Aaron’s Mechanical Service ROC # is 274388.

Aaron’s Mechanical Service is also an Better Business Bureau Accredited Business member.

Choose your service provider carefully.

Give us a call and let us help you with your heating and cooling needs whether it be a repair or a replacement.

Swamp Coolers and the Arizona Monsoon Season

In the Arizona desert in the 1920s, people would often sleep outside on screened-in sleeping porches during the summer. On hot nights, bed sheets or blankets soaked in water would be hung inside of the screens. Whirling electric fans would pull the night air through the moist cloth to cool the room.

That concept, slightly more refined, became the evaporative coolers that to this day provide a low-cost, low-technology alternative to refrigerated air conditioning.

An evaporative cooler produces effective cooling by combining a natural process - water evaporation - with a simple, reliable air-moving system. Fresh outside air is pulled through moist pads where it is cooled by evaporation and circulated through a house or building by a large blower. As this happens, the temperature of the outside air can be lowered as much as 30 degrees.

Probably because evaporative coolers add moisture to the air and blow it around, they are sometimes knows as "swamp coolers." Evaporative coolers can work wonderfully well, provided the outside air they are drawing in is dry and desert-like. As the humidity increases, however, the ability for them to cool the air effectively decreases. Simply put, swamp coolers were not designed to work in swamp-like conditions.

The Arizona Monsoon seasons is just a few days away and the evaporative coolers don’t work (or at all) well as the humidity (or dew point) climbs.  Anytime after June 20th the dew point can climb above 50° and the evaporative coolers begin to blow warm (or hot) moist air.

The main drawback of swamp coolers is that they depend on dry outside air to operate effectively. This is usually not a problem for most of Arizona, which has a desert climate. On hot, muggy days during the summer monsoon season, however, swamp coolers will blow hot, humid, soggy air into the house. If the humidity stays high for several days, the moist pads that make the evaporative cooler work can begin to smell, and the musty odor can be blown into the house.

Now is the time to make sure your AC unit is ready to take the load of keeping your home cool and dry.  Give Aaron’s Mechanical Service a call at 623-388-4436 to see how we can help you be ready.

Dust Storms and Your Air Conditioner

It is summertime in Arizona and it is not unusual for the summer afternoons to be filled with lots of blowing dust and debris from a large dust storm.

Most of the time your air conditioner will not be harmed by a little blowing dust.  But a monsoon season dust storm can bring about damage that may require repair.

After the dust storm blows through your neighborhood you may find everything from palm fronds to deck chairs in your yard. Even if your AC unit is still running it may not hurt to look at the outside for branches, dents and paper or plastic items stuck to or in the air conditioner.  This can be done from ground level.  It is not necessary (or a good idea) to climb on your roof.

If you see damage or items stuck in the A/C unit it is a good idea to give Aaron’s Mechanical Service  a call (623-388-4436) a get your unit cleaned out.  One side of your unit will have many fins that provide cooling (think radiator) and if these are dented in it will reduce the efficiency of the unit.

Even if the unit looks OK, if you feel it is not running as well as it had in the recent past it is a good idea to have it looked at as it can have gotten a lot of just dust into some sensitive areas.

So call it a dust storm or a haboob* they can spell trouble for your HVAC unit.

*Any dryland region may experience haboobs. In the USA, they are frequently observed in the deserts of Arizona, including Yuma and Phoenix, as well as New Mexico and Texas.  During monsoon storm formation, winds move in a direction opposite to the storm's travel, and they will move from all directions into the thunderstorm. When the storm collapses and begins to release precipitation, wind directions reverse, gusting outward from the storm and generally gusting the strongest in the direction of the storm's travel.

Home Much Difference Can Proper Insulation Make?

Insulating some areas of your home are easier and more cost-effective than others. A home energy audit can help you determine which areas you should insulate first.

Start at the Top: Attic Insulation
The attic is usually easiest to insulate for a single family home, and it’s also where a lot of energy enters and leaves the building.

Types of Attics:
No floor: to add more insulation, place new, un-faced batt insulation perpendicular to existing insulation to cover the joists.

Attic floor: Remove floor before adding insulation. According to the Rocky Mountain Institute, 12 inches of insulation will be cost effective in most climates. Precaution: be careful not to step through the uncovered space into the ceiling below.

Finished attic with cathedral ceiling: Requires removing the roof, installing rigid material, then re-roofing. A contractor should do this and the labor and materials costs may be expensive. Attic insulation in this case may not be as cost effective as other weatherization measures.

No Attic: You can install insulation on the underside of the roof system rather than the floor. Hire a skilled contractor if you choose this option.

Outside In: Insulating Walls
Adding wall insulation is more complex than adding attic insulation, and typically require the skills of a professional contractor. Your home’s walls account for the greatest area of the building’s exterior, so adding wall insulation can be more costly. Consult a home energy auditor or contractor to see if wall insulation is cost-effective for your home.

Types of Walls:
Finished: Loose-fill insulation is a good choice for existing finished walls, as installation does not disturb the existing wall much. Unfinished interior walls: If you’re installing a home addition, you can easily add blanket or batt insulation between the framing studs. Exterior walls: If you’re replacing your home’s exterior siding, consider having a contractor install rigid board insulation.

Bottom Lines: Foundation, Basement & Crawlspace
Up to 20% of the heat in your home may escape through an un-insulated foundation. Insulating around the edge of a slab-on-grade foundation can pay for itself in energy savings within 5 to 10 years. Consider insulating finished or unfinished basements, and crawlspaces as well.

How Much Is Enough? The amount of insulation to install depends on your climate, type of insulation, home construction parameters, fuel type, and energy efficiency goals. Use the U.S.Department of Energy’s (DOE) ZIP-Code Insulation Program and R-value Recommendations to guide you. Or, to get the most accurate recommendation, hire a professional to perform an energy audit on your home.

Helping you save money is our mission. We don’t do insulation, but we can help with AC repair. Give Aaron’s Mechanical Service a call at 623-388-4436 for the right advice on your AC Unit!

Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance and More Maintenance

A lot of folks are very comfortable during an Arizona summer and that means one thing and one thing only, they have a good and properly running Air Conditioner.

However after a short while some of them forget that the AC Unit is working very hard to change the outside temperature at 112° Fahrenheit (and many times much more) and keeping the inside of their home at a comfortable 72°.  To keep an HVAC unit running at it most cost efficient they need proper care and that means a tune up every cooling season or the “M” word, Maintenance.

You may find specials on “AC Tune-ups.”  For some companies this is an advertising gimmick to get them into your home.  But a proper maintenance program can stop future problems with your unit.  So rather than a “cheap” tune up what you need is the right maintenance for your unit based on the manufacture, size, age and the current state of the AC unit.

What you want in a AC Tune-up is a good technician that knows your type of unit and cares about making sure you have a reliable and trustworthy Air Conditioner.  There is no substitute for years of experience.  If the company is structured correctly a newer technician can reach an older. More experienced tech by phone if he has any questions about a unit he might be seeing for the first time.

A tune-up should not be just an inspection and testing, but, real maintenance of the unit.  The difference is when the technician is there the unit is brought back to near factory spec condition.  You can’t expect a many year old unit to be like new again but it should work as close to new as possible based on its age.

This is better for you as far as costs are concerned and it means the unit shouldn’t let you suffering from an outage on the hottest day of the year.  If your unit is a combined Heat / Cool HVAC unit it means the maintenance needs to occur twice a year.

Everything You Want To Know About SEER

The efficiency of air conditioners is often rated by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) which is defined by the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute in its standard ARI 210/240, Performance Rating of Unitary Air-Conditioning and Air-Source Heat Pump Equipment.

The SEER rating of a unit is the cooling output in Btu (British thermal unit) during a typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input in watt-hours during the same period. The higher the unit's SEER rating the more energy efficient it is…

Air conditioner sizes are often given as "tons" of cooling, where 1 ton of cooling equals 12,000 BTU/h (3.5 kW). 1 ton of cooling equals the amount of power that needs to be applied continuously, over a 24 hour period, to melt 1 ton of ice. The annual cost of electric energy consumed by a 72,000 BTU/h (21 kW) (6 ton) air conditioning unit, operating for 1000 hours per year, with a SEER rating of 10, and an electric energy cost of $0.12 per kilowatt-hour (kW·h) is:

(72,000 BTU/h) × (1000 h) × ($0.12/kW·h) ÷ (10 BTU/W·h) ÷ (1000 kW/W) = $864

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) has the same units of Btu/W·hr, but instead of being evaluated at a single operating condition, it represents the expected overall performance for a typical year's weather in a given location. The SEER is thus calculated with the same indoor temperature, but over a range of outside temperatures from 65 to 104 degrees F, with a certain specified percentage of time in each of 8 bins each spanning 5 degrees F. There is no allowance for different climates in this rating. It just gives an indication of how the actual EER is typically affected by different outside temperatures over the course of a cooling season.

SEER rating more accurately reflects overall system efficiency on a seasonal basis and EER reflects the system’s energy efficiency at one specific operating condition. Both ratings are useful when choosing products, but the same rating must be used for comparisons. As of January 2006, all residential air conditioners sold in the United States must have a SEER of at least 13. ENERGY STAR qualified Central Air Conditioners must have a SEER of at least 14.

With existing units that are still functional and well-maintained, when the time value of money is considered, retaining existing units rather than proactively replacing them may be the most cost effective. However, the efficiency of air conditioners can degrade significantly over time. Therefore, maintenance (such as cleaning the coils) should be performed regularly to keep their efficiencies as high as possible.

But when either replacing equipment, or specifying new installations, a variety of SEERs are available. For most applications, the minimum or near-minimum SEER units are most cost effective, but the longer the cooling seasons, the higher the electricity costs, and the longer the purchasers will own the systems, the more that incrementally higher SEER units are justified. Residential split-system AC units of SEER 20 or more are now available, but at substantial cost premiums over the standard SEER 13 units. The higher SEER units typically have larger coils and multiple compressors, the cost reflects the additional complexity.

If SEER is all Greek to you that is OK,  Give Aaron’s Mechanical Service a call at 623-388-4436 for the right advice on your AC Unit!

Phone Shopping For A New A/C Unit – No Way

We all want to make our purchases at a fair price.  We sure agree on that idea.  The right price or the fair price is almost never the lowest price.  When faced with replacing an Air Conditioner many people start by picking up the phone and begin to call around to all the dealers they can find.

If all they want to know is what is the lowest price you can replace my AC unit that can lead to nothing but bad deals.

To get the correct AC unit a technician should come to your location and first evaluate your current AC unit.  They need to make sure that you get an HVAC unit that is the correct size for your home.  Everything from the number and size of windows, type of construction, insulation level, room sizes and overall square feet will go into sizing your new ac unit correctly.

Then based on the findings you can start to talk about the options for your home.  If you plan on living there as a primary residence do you want to purchase the best unit for your home or the worst unit for your home?

If you base the purchase on the cheapest price, do you think you will end up with a unit that will do the best job and last the longest?  Do your air ducts leak?  Now would be a great time to correct that. A unit that is rated higher (SEER Number) may cost a bit more to buy but will operate at a lower cost overall.

The right unit could last up to 15 or more years.  The wrong units may have to be replaced three times over the same 15 years.  One correct purchase will be far less expensive than those three “Cheap” units.  What is the warranty like on the least expensive units.

A contractor who needs a truck to do his job can’t call a car dealership and ask them for the cheapest vehicle on the lot.  For the same reason you can’t just call for the lowest priced Air Conditioner.

AZ Places: Oak Creek Canyon

Get out and into the cool high country of northern Arizona. Oak Creek Canyon is a river gorge located along the Mogollon Rim in northern Arizona located between the cities of Flagstaff and Sedona. The canyon is often described as a smaller cousin of the Grand Canyon because of its scenic beauty. State Route 89A enters the canyon on its north end via a series of hairpin turns before traversing the bottom of the canyon for about 13 miles until the highway enters the town of Sedona.

The Oak Creek Canyon-Sedona area is the second most popular tourist destination in Arizona, second only to the Grand Canyon.

Oak Creek Canyon is located within the Coconino National Forest. Portions of the canyon have been designated federal wilderness areas as part of the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness. The United States Forest Service operates several campgrounds, picnic areas, and recreation areas within the canyon. Slide Rock State Park, home to a natural water slide along Oak Creek, is also located within Oak Creek Canyon.

Other recreational activities in the canyon include swimming and fishing in Oak Creek. There are 49 fishable miles along the creek where rainbow trout, brown trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, catfish (channel) and catfish (flathead) can all be found.

Hiking the many trails that lead into side canyons or up to the rim of the canyon is also a great activity for the area. The trail leading the first 3 miles up the West Fork of Oak Creek, a 14 mile long narrow side canyon, is the most popular trail in the Coconino National Forest.

What To Do To Get Your Home "Energy Ready" For Summer

Before it gets too warm, it's time to make sure you're ready for hot weather.

This doesn't mean running out and buying the latest swim wear. It means checking your home's heat and air-conditioning system.

First, change your filters in your heating/cooling system. Change them regularly - at least monthly.

Next change your thermostat over to "cool" and test the system by turning the temperature down. If the air conditioner does not turn on, first check to make sure no breakers are tripped. If you can't figure out the problem, Aaron’s Mechanical Services. Calling early may keep you from making an "emergency" call when the temperatures are soaring and the repair people are too busy.

If your cooling system turns on, make sure it is putting out adequate cooling. If it's not, and you can't figure out the problem, call Aaron’s Mechanical Services. Make sure you set it at 78 degrees.

If your air conditioner needs replacement do it BEFORE the HOT WEATHER HITS because heating & air conditioning repair people will be very busy. And more than likely, some other things around your home need attention as well. Your air ducts may need testing for leaks and then sealed. Your attic insulation probably has compacted, so you need to add an additional 5 to 8 inches. Your windows and doors and other parts of the building envelope may need caulking and weather stripping. You need solar window film to keep out the heat.

Consider changing your old thermostat to a programmable one. You can save up to $100 a year by using a new set-back thermostat. If your thermostat is really old and uses a mercury switch (a glass tube filed with silvery substance) call your local public works department to find out how to dispose of this toxic material.

Consider installing a whole-house fan that uses cool air in the evening to cool the entire house and push hot air out of the attic area.

If you cover your air conditioner's condenser unit (the part that is outside the house) for the winter, take off the cover and hose down the coils. Clear areas around the condenser unit so that it has full air flow.

Install ceiling fans or whole house fans to help reduce your need to use the air conditioner.

Saving Money On Cooling Everyday!

Your AC Filter
Clean or replace your AC filter every month. A dirty filter makes your AC work harder, which uses more electricity. Your home improvement store sells permanent filters which you can wash with a garden hose so you don't have to replace the filter each month.

Your Ceiling Fan
Make sure your fan is blowing DOWN, to send air past your body, removing the hot air that surrounds your body. If your fan is blowing up, it won't do any good.  In fact, it's worse than no fan, because it moves the warm air at the ceiling back down towards the living area.

It's true that a fan that blows down also pushes the warmer air down from the ceiling into the living area, but it's blowing even warmer air away from your body, so the overall effect is to cool you down.

A New Unit with Higher SEER
As of Jan. 2006, AC's must have a SEER of at least 13, although they go as high as 19. Both the inside and outside units should be a similar SEER for best efficiency.

Have Aaron’s Mechanical Services Check Your Ducts For Leaks
Tests in different areas have shown that the average home loses 27% of its heating or cooling from leaky ducts. And over 86% of homes had ducts which lost more than 10%. Leaking ducts and insufficient insulation meant that the average home used 162 kWh/mo. extra electricity per month or 18% more than normal. This is an extra $233 a year at average electrical rates.

Doors and Window Seals
You'll pay a lot more to cool your home when the cold air easily escapes. Do-it-yourself weather stripping for doors and caulk for windows is easy to install, and cheap. Also make sure to caulk around the holes where pipes go into the wall under sinks.

Also, close the damper to the fireplace when you're not using it -- otherwise, cool air will escape through the damper.
