Heating and Air Conditioning in AZ During the Fall

Our Fall weather is coming in now with lows in the fifties and highs near one hundred degrees Fahrenheit in the afternoon.  Very few places need heating in the morning and air conditioning during the afternoon highs. For the next month we will have these schizophrenic days. During November we will need morning heating but should not need active cooling in the afternoon.

During the following four to five months (December to March) our heating systems will be put to the test with nights dropping to freezing or below on some days here in the desert southwest.

This fall is the very best time to schedule a heating system tune up or replacement evaluation. We won’t be swamped with work and can give you extra time and attention when it comes to your heating system.

Just like there is a best time to get married, buy back to school items or even a new car, now is the time for us to look at your HVAC system. Planning ahead is always a good money and time saving idea.

Did You Know
1. Who invented the air conditioner, and for what purpose?

It was Willis Carrier who invented air conditioning. He originally created the air conditioner for the publishing company he worked for in Brooklyn, to keep the temperature and humidity low enough for paper to refrain from expanding or contracting.

2. True or False: Before Air Conditioning, industrial workers had month long vacations in August?

TRUE. Industrial workers were sluggish in the hot buildings during the summer, slowing or even stopping production during the sweltering summer months. Even the government shut down during parts of the summer for the very same reason!

3. True or False: Air conditioning has effected education nationwide?

FALSE.  Summer vacation exists because at the near the turn of the century, hot, stuffy schools were intolerable, and some advocates worried about the spread of disease in such poor conditions. Although air conditioning has made it possible for students to be comfortable year-round, the vacation schedule never changed.

At Aaron’s Mechanical Service we want you to stay comfortable all year round.  If your HVAC unit needs service or replacement please think of us and call at 623-388-4436 and we will come to you and solve your heating or air conditioning service needs.

Is Using Just The Fan On Your AC Unit Okay?

With our nights, here in the Phoenix Metro area cooling off nicely you may wonder if it is OK to use just the blower fan to circulate air just for the night.  If you have a very well insulated home it may do little good as the air you will be moving will be from the inside of your home.

You could open a window or two and draw in the cooler night air.  The windows you open, however, could be a threat to your security.  So if you can open a window just a crack and lock it in that position then you can safely get the benefit from the cool night air.

If you have a multilevel home where you draw air in is an important consideration and there is no hard and fast rule as the placement of the bedrooms, hallways and many other factors will affect the overall airflow patterns.  While hot air rises you are forcing the circulation based on the AC’s fan unit and vent placement and not the air movement just by convection.

For those who have been puzzled by your thermostat having a fan switch, here's an explanation: If the AC is off, then turning the fan on will simply recirculate the inside air without cooling it. (It draws in through the intake (where your filter is) and blows out through the ceiling vents as it normally does.) There's not much advantage to this, because it doesn't make the house any cooler, but it can help keep the air "fresh" since it's being drawn through the filter and it's being moved around a lot.  When the AC is on, the air's already being circulated, so in that case there's no difference whether the fan switch is on or off.

At night for using just your fan to cool off your rooms you must introduce cool night-time air to enter your home through some means.

The electricity used to move the cool night air will be just a fraction of that of running the air conditioning compressor to cool the air.

Consider that opening a window (just a crack and locking it in that position) and then using a ceiling fan or area task fan can be just as effective  in cooling your home as using your HVAC system blower fan.

Remember opening a window to allow cool night air changes (lowers) the security of your home.  That may be the most important consideration in night time cooling off.  If you not careful you could forget the open window during the day while you may be at work.  That will cause a loss of air conditioning efficiency, not to mention a different type of security issue.

Fall Must Be Here!

Sunday brought the official beginning of fall around mid-day.  This morning with the temperature in the mid-sixties it sure felt like fall in the Phoenix Metro area.  Over the next few days the National Weather service forecasts days running well below our average daytime highs and very comfortable night time lows.

Most heating systems here in the Valley of the Sun are powered by either natural gas or electric and our part of your HVAC system.  Some folks refer to it as your central heating and cooling system.

If your heat comes from your air conditioner it isn’t true that if your air conditioner is running right that that means the “heating” side of your heat pump is also ready to go.  It is not just a matter of sliding the switch from “cool” to “heat” and set the temperature on your thermostat and forget about it.  That is not the best idea.

If you have a separate furnace then you want to make sure it is checked before you start the gas flowing and start up the gas burners.

A heating system check-up now will ensure that the heat will click on when you want it to.  Just like your ac unit you need maintenance to keep your heating system running at peak efficiency to save you money.  A well maintained system should also last longer.

Your Furnace Check-up
A furnace check-up or tune-up is much like a visit to the doctor or taking your car to a mechanic. However, specifically in the case of your home, a furnace check-up consists of the following steps:

Inspect thermostat for proper operation.

Inspect filter and change or clean as needed.

Check all electrical components and controls.

Lubricate motors and pulley shafts as needed.

Inspect heat exchanger for possible cracks. A crack in the heat exchanger will introduce carbon monoxide into the living space.

Check air flow. If diminished, it may be necessary to clean the evaporator coil.

Check air fuel mixture, where appropriate.

Air Conditioner Tips and Tricks - September 17th 2013

Did you know what holiday happens on September 17th?  It isn’t related to air conditioners but it is rather cool. (So sorry, bad pun)

Constitution Day (or Citizenship Day) is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is observed on, the 17th of September the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787 in Philadelphia.

The law establishing the present holiday was created in 2004 with the passage of an amendment by Senator Robert Byrd to the Omnibus spending bill of 2004. Before this law was enacted, the holiday was known as "Citizenship Day". In addition to renaming the holiday "Constitution Day and Citizenship Day," the act mandates that all publicly-funded educational institutions provide educational programming on the history of the American Constitution on that day. In May 2005, the United States Department of Education announced the enactment of this law and that it would apply to any school receiving federal funds of any kind. This holiday is not observed by granting time off work for federal employees.

When Constitution Day falls on a weekend or on another holiday, schools and other institutions observe the holiday on an adjacent weekday. This was the case in 2005 and 2011, when Constitution Day was generally observed on Friday, September 16 and 2006 when the holiday was observed on Monday, September 18.

Universities and colleges nationwide have created "U.S. Constitution and Citizenship Weeks" in order to meet the requirements of the law. For example, the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) has created a celebration week that includes "Constitution Trivia Contests", distribution of free copies of the U.S. Constitution, a campus & community fair (in which volunteer and community groups can share information with students), a web page with facts and links related to the Constitution and history of the United States. MSOE has also distributed thousands of free "Presidential quote" t-shirts to all students on campus.

To find out more about the Constitution Day please go to the following web site URL http://www.archives.gov/education/lessons/constitution-day

Today’s Air Conditioning Tip: Install mini-blinds or white window shades. Mini-blinds can be very effective and can reduce heat gain from direct sunlight by 40-50 percent. You can also hang bamboo shades or tightly woven screens outside your windows. This will stop up to 80 percent of the sun's heat from getting through your windows.

At Aaron’s Mechanical Service we want you to stay cool and comfortable all year round.  If your AC unit needs service or replacement please think of us and call at 623-388-4436 and we will come to you and solve your air conditioning service needs.

Triple Digits Ahead - Again

Well, here we are going into the third week in September with the official start of Fall just a few days away and the Phoenix Metro area is facing triple digits for the next seven days.

If that seems a bit hotter than you would like it is very close to the normal average temperatures for the Valley of the Sun during September. It is our job to keep your home cool and comfortable and might I add to do it as efficiently as possible.  We aren’t here to ignore the true economics of cool, comfortable but as cost effective as you should expect.

Your air conditioner needs to be as efficient as possible and that means keeping the AC Unit in Tip Top condition.  Proper maintenance is a great place to start as is a unit that was designed from the ground up to be efficient.  How efficient an air conditioner is is rated by the acronym of SEER.  SEER means Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio.

The efficiency of air conditioners is often rated by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) which is defined by the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute in its 2008 standard AHRI 210/240, Performance Rating of Unitary Air-Conditioning and Air-Source Heat Pump Equipment.

The SEER rating of a unit is the cooling output during a typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input during the same period. The higher the unit's SEER rating the more energy efficient it is. In the U.S., the SEER is the ratio of cooling in British thermal unit (BTU) to the energy consumed in watt-hours.

The Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of a particular cooling device is the ratio of output cooling (in BTU/h) to input electrical power (in watts) at a given operating point. EER is generally calculated using a 95 °F outside temp and an inside (actually return air) temp of 80 °F and 50% relative humidity. The EER is a more realistic measurement of energy efficiency in warmer climates due to the high demand and higher cost of peak hour electricity.

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is also the COP expressed in BTU/W·hr, but instead of being evaluated at a single operating condition, it represents the expected overall performance for a typical year's weather in a given location. The SEER is thus calculated with the same indoor temperature, but over a range of outside temperatures from 65 °F (18 °C) to 104 °F (40 °C), with a certain specified percentage of time in each of 8 bins spanning 5 °F (2.8 °C). There is no allowance for different climates in this rating, which is intended to give an indication of how the EER is affected by a range of outside temperatures over the course of a cooling season.

Wow, that is a real mouthful.  We can take that mess and make sense of it so you don’t have to.  We come to you as fast as possible and deal with your AC needs.

Monitor and Control Your Thermostat with Your iPhone or iPad

Most of us rely on technology to help manage our daily lives more efficiently, so connecting your HVAC system to the internet may be the next logical step.

You can stay connected to your business or residential property wherever you are.  Instant notifications of temperature and humidity changes are only a couple advantages of thermostat remote access.

One of the best products currently available is the Honeywell Prestige 2.0 Comfort System Thermostat.  With a convenient iPhone app you can view and change HVAC system settings,  view and set temperature, view indoor humidity, view outdoor temperature and humidity, access multiple thermostats and even multiple locations. You can get instant alerts via email.

Convenience is not the only reason to consider this thermostat, it could help save you money on your electric bill.

When the Prestige 2.0 is used for commercial applications the programmable display will register occupied, unoccupied, override, and holiday settings.  You can create custom events 365 days to program the thermostat based on business hours.  To help save money, there is an economizer setting that switches between ventilation and cooling during occupied times depending on the outdoor temperature.  With total control over your thermostat settings you can ensure the air conditioning or heating is only running at those times when it is needed.

Other features of this thermostat are return and discharge air temperature sensors, customer alerts if the system is not functioning as expected, and alerts that inform you that there could be an issue prior to loss of cooling or heating capability.

If you are interested in knowing more about this type of thermostat, please call Aaron’s Mechanical Service and we will be happy to help you determine if this is the right thermostat for you.

Arizona Places: Wigwam Motel Holbrook AZ

Want to give the kids a real treat this weekend and see some of northern Arizona?  Visit great natural sites like Meteor Crater and the Painted Desert and stay in an Indian style (sort of) Tepee.  You sure can.  It all starts with a relatively short car ride to Holbrook and a stop at the Wigwam Motel.

The history of the Wigwam Motel is very interesting for many people.  Chester E. Lewis, had other motels along Old Route 66 in the 1930's in other Arizona cities.  He saw his first Wigwam Village in Cave City, Kentucky in 1938.  A man by the name of Frank Redford already had a couple of Wigwam Villages built in Kentucky by that time.

Chester decided that he would like to build a Wigwam Village of his own.  In that time period, the term franchises or chain motels were not known of, much less used.  Mr. Redford was more interested in sharing his novel idea than making money. Mr. Lewis and Mr. Redford came to an agreement that radios would be placed in each Wigwam that would play for one half hour for a silver dime.  Mr. Redford would then receive the dimes from the radios for a period of some years in payment for the use of his plans.

There were seven of these Wigwam Villages built from the 1930's to the 1950's from Florida to California. The one, in Holbrook, receives a lot of media attention due to it being located on Route 66 and located near several Native American Reservations, Navajo, Hopi, White Mountain Apache Reservations.  There are several vintage automobiles that are around the perimeter of the property.

Three of the Wigwam Villages remain open today; Cave City KY, Rialto CA and Holbrook AZ.

Holbrook is on the banks of the Little Colorado River in northeastern Arizona's high-plateau country, with the nearby Navajo and Hopi reservations offering distinctive attractions such as ceremonial dances and Indian arts and crafts.

Nearby are the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest National Park, with petrified logs displaying an array of colors. To the north are canyons containing cliff dwellings, such as those found in Canyon de Chelly.

Don’t let the old cars pictured fool you they are still open for business.

The Wigwam Motel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 2002.

Phoenix Area Monsoon Facts

Mother Nature sure is being nice to us for the first two days of this week.  The rains have cooled off the valley and we have wonderful mid-eighties for daytime highs.  Sure the humidity has been in the sixty to mid-seventy percent range and that makes the air almost tropical feeling.

While there have been a few storm related issues it could have been a lot worse.  This looks like it could be the last of our monsoon related moisture.  Some of these late monsoon thunderstorms can cause a lot of storm related damage.

Did you know that during our monsoon, or summer thunderstorm season, Arizona experiences more severe weather than many other states. On a very rare occasion, a severe storm may even spawn a tornado. More often, high straight line winds, dust and severe downpours resulting in flash floods are common monsoon occurrences.

Prior to 2008 the Phoenix area monsoon was considered to have started when there were three consecutive days when the dew point averaged 55 degrees or higher. However, in 2008 the National Weather Service decided to take the guesswork out of monsoon start and end dates. After all, monsoon is a season, and most people should not be concerned with whether or not a particular dust storm was defined as monsoon storm or not. Beginning in 2008, June 15 was established as the first day of monsoon, and September 30 will be the last day. Now we can be more concerned with monsoon safety and less concerned with definitions.

Meteorologists still track and report dewpoints and study monsoon weather patterns. Here are some technical monsoon facts for the Phoenix Metro area. The facts relate to dewpoint and the meteorological definition of monsoon and not the date on the calendar.

The average starting date of the monsoon in Phoenix is July 7.
The average ending date of the monsoon is September 13.
The earliest start date for the monsoon was June 16, 1925.
The latest start date for the monsoon was July 25, 1987.
The average total number of monsoon days  is 56.
The greatest number of monsoon days was 99, recorded in 1984.
The fewest number of monsoon days was 27, recorded in 1962.

The greatest number of consecutive monsoon days was 72, from June 25 through September 4, 1984. This was also the greatest number of consecutive days with dew points of 60 degrees or higher.

In Phoenix, normal rainfall during July, August and September is 2.65 inches.

The wettest monsoon occurred in 1984 when we had 9.38 inches of rain.

The driest monsoon occurred in 1924 with only 0.35 inches.

A Few Cooler and Wet Days Ahead

Well, we finally get a break from our triple digit temperatures.  But, with afternoon highs in the mid to upper nineties and very humid your air conditioner will still be working hard to keep you cool and comfortable.

We just want you to know that if your AC Unit gives you trouble we can be there quickly to get you cool and comfortable.  While your unit may not have to run as long as it would on a day in the triple digits it still will be running to keep you home cool.  Many people who have had their thermostats set in the low eighties to save money may set them to seventy-eight or even a bit lower.  When it is humid it takes a few degrees lower settings to make you feel as comfortable as when the humidity is a lot lower.

Ah, the sweet relief of a cool, dry home after a hot, sweaty afternoon of outdoor work.  Your AC system's air compressor and condenser are sometimes located on the ground, close to your foundation. It works best when there's about twenty-four inches of clear space in all directions. Have you let nearby shrubs, tall grass, leaves, and hanging branches grow to close and affect the efficiency of your ac unit?

At Aaron’s Mechanical Service we can put you on a yearly cleaning schedule that goes beyond just cleaning the filters. Schedule this tune-up before the cooling season starts (or do it now if you didn't do it earlier this year), and make sure it includes the following tasks: cleaning and inspecting coils; cleaning or replacing filters; adjusting and replacing fan belts; lubricating motors and bearings; cleaning and checking blowers and fans; inspecting controls and safeties; checking refrigerant and pressures; and verifying operating temperatures.  You know the old saying that often attributed to Benjamin Franklin, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Did you know?  Shutting too many interior doors can sometimes cause central AC systems to go out of balance, meaning there's less than full airflow throughout the entire house. If your doors touch the carpet as they close is a perfect example.

The use of area or ceiling fans will have a great cooling effect on days like these.  Give them a try.

Is September 5th The Last 110 Day For 2013?

I
Is September 5th the last 110 degree Fahrenheit day for 2013? I sure think that is a fair question and unfortunately it may not be.  We can always hope that it will be. The record for the latest 110 degree day is September 15th and that happened in 2000.

If you are wondering why we even think about the high temp during this time of year the answer is very simple.  Here at Aaron’s Mechanical Service we repair and replace air conditioning systems for your home.  We want you to be cool and comfortable.  Understanding how high temperatures affect you is just a small part of our job, but a vital one.

The Phoenix Metro area is the hottest large metropolitan area in the United States.  To find a hotter one you need to look to the Middle East where daytime highs can reach into the 130 degree range.

Now the Chamber of Commerce and the local tourist board don’t like us to say the “hot” word when it comes to our climate (they think it scares away the average visitor) but we think it is only fair to tell it like it is.  Phoenix has stinking hot days.  Even when the humidity is very low, and we have many of those days, it is still hot when they daytime high is over 110 degrees for many hours.

What makes the Valley of the Sun livable is plain and simple, air conditioning and an AC unit that is running at peak efficiency.  That is where Aaron’s Mechanical Service comes into the picture.  We help keep the homes in Phoenix Arizona cool and comfortable… livable.

Air conditioners are complex mechanical systems that depend on a wide variety of conditions to work correctly. They are sized to meet a certain “load” on the house. They are designed to have certain amount of refrigerant, known as the “charge”. They are designed to have a certain amount of air flow across the coils. When any of these things changes, the system will have problems.

If you produce more heat indoors either from having more people or appliances or because of changes in the house, your air conditioning may not be able to keep up.

When your AC is down and out the first thing you think about is the need to get it running as soon as possible.  We understand and support that as much as possible.  Sometimes the best fix is a new ac unit. Only an in home visit will let you know where you stand with an older unit.  With a new air conditioning unit you can have a 5, 7 or 10 year warranty and with that comes true peace of mind.

If you are replacing the air conditioner, look to buy high efficiency equipment. The most generally known efficiency rating is Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER). SEER 13 is the minimum efficiency you should consider, but higher efficiencies are likely to be quite cost effective.

AZ Places – Buddy Stubbs Motorcycle Museum

Wow, here it is September and the television weatherman tells us that the next two days we will see the daytime highs in the 110 degree range.  Soon after the temperature will drop but it is offset with a decrease in humidity and that means we will be both hot and humid.  Which means we will be very uncomfortable.

If you are looking for a great place to cool off and get a great educational experience there is a great motorcycle museum to visit.  The Buddy Stubbs Motorcycle Museum is a great place to tour and see an interesting cross section of many brands and types of two wheeled transportation.

Buddy Stubbs isn't your ordinary motorcycle aficionado. Unlike your average weekend rider, the local motorcycle business owner has been riding these steel steeds pretty much since reportedly being born in the back room of his parents' Harley Davidson shop. The septuagenarian chopper fiend was raised around two-wheelers, began riding one at only 10 years of age, and went on to have a championship motorcycle career before opening his Cave Creek dealership in 1966. In addition to riding bikes for most of his life, Stubbs has spent decades accumulating arguably one of the biggest and best cycle collections in the entire Southwest. And he's more than happy to show off his collection to the public.

A guided Museum tour starts every Saturday at Noon. These tours are free, bring your camera and arrive a few minutes prior.

Please note that the last Saturday of every month is their Hogs & Dogs party. These tours may be more crowded. Please arrive early and speak with their receptionist to ensure your guided tour time.

If you'd like to arrange a private tour for groups of 10 or more, please email marketing@buddystubbs.com

The Southwest's Premier Motorcycle Museum with 3000+ sq. ft. of classic two-wheeled history is housed inside of the new 45,717 sq. ft. Buddy Stubbs Arizona Harley-Davidson facility. With over 30 different motorcycle manufacturers, this museum is a must see for all motorcycle enthusiasts. Make your plans to visit this collection of over 100 rare machines from 1903 through the 21st Century.

Did Your Air Conditioner Make It Through The Summer?

Did you start the summer cooling season with a silent prayer that your AC Unit made it through the summer.  Yes, I know that many folks think that, when their unit has been in service for many years.

Summer doesn’t officially end until the 20th of September and we will have highs above 100 degrees and in the high nineties for the next sixty to ninety days.

The next question is do you just need a good repair or does it make sense to replace your older AC unit.

Several factors are needed to understand the right side of the question – repair or replace your current air conditioner.

How long do you plan on living in that residence?

How old is your AC Unit?

How Efficient is Your Current Unit (SEER Rating)?

How much will the Current Repair Cost?

How Many Repairs have you had recently?

The most obvious sign is the need for constant air conditioner repairs – especially if those repairs get progressively more expensive. Let’s face it – if your air conditioner breaks down more than once in a summer, you can patch it up but it won’t be long before you need to replace it. If your need for air conditioner repair gets really bad, air conditioner replacement can actually save you some money by eliminating the need for costly repairs.

If you’re still on the fence about getting air conditioner replacement, think about this: how much time would it take before a new air conditioner pays for itself in terms of energy and repair cost savings? To figure this out, first determine the amount of energy you could save with a new air conditioner.

When you buy a new air conditioner, there are three things to remember. Don't buy an oversized unit. Buy an efficient model. And make sure that the unit you buy is installed properly.

If you live in the Phoenix Metro area and have an old air conditioner that needs frequent repairs or doesn’t cool your house properly, call Aaron’s Mechanical Service. We will come out and inspect your air conditioner and determine how much money you would save if you had air conditioner replacement.

Labor Day September 2nd 2013

In the United States, Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a celebration of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes an annual national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.

In many countries, the working classes sought to make May Day an official holiday, and their efforts largely succeeded. In the United States and Canada, however, the official holiday for workers is Labor Day in September. This day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in New York City. After the Haymarket Massacre, US President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Thus, in 1887, it was established as an official holiday in September to support the Labor Day that the Knights favored.

The 2013 Labor Day celebrations may be a bit muted. While the economy appears to be recovering, jobs are far from plentiful.  Good middle class jobs just don’t pay as well or have the hours and benefits they did before.  Progress is being made and many indicators point to continued improvement.

Many of us will be out celebrating the end of the summer school holiday.  Here in the Phoenix metro area we know that a few days near 110 degrees are still possible. We face the month of September with nearly all days well over the century mark temperature wise. Here is a comment that seems to capture what most folks think of this holiday. Labor Day is a glorious holiday because your child will be going back to school the next day.  It would have been called Independence Day, but that holiday name was already taken.

The holiday often marks the return to school, although school starting times now vary. As times have changed the back to school timing has changed and many students have already spent two to three weeks in school when Labor Day rolls around.

The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations", followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the Labor movement.

At Aaron’s Mechanical Service we want you to stay cool and comfortable all year round.  If your AC unit needs service or replacement please think of us and call at 623-388-4436 and we will come to you and solve your air conditioning service needs.
