The Last Day of June 2014, Are You Thinking AC Repair Yet?

This June has been a very mild month. Oh no, that is not a complaint.  I enjoy a nice string of cool days as well as anyone else.

But, it has been downright hot these last two days of June. Has your home been staying as cool as you would like it to be?  I always find that the other side of “cool” is “expense”.  How much has it been costing you to stay cool?

Many folks just expect their monthly energy bill to go up month after month and year after year.  They blame the increase on the power company.  Yes, that is always a factor that you must consider.

But how well you maintain your AC unit can be a big part of your increasing energy costs. Keeping your air conditioner clean is a big part of how well it can cool.  That better efficiency will mean lower electricity bills. We aren’t just talking about your indoor air filter either.  The coils that do the heat transfer need cleaning as well.

Sometime an electronic component just fails and your air conditioner just stops working and it is clear that you need to call an HVAC contractor to come out and fix your AC.

Many times a service call or tune-up that isn’t done is actually what causes the stress and failure of the electronic “part” in the first place.  Sort of the old saying… “You can pay me now or you can pay me later, but either way you are going to have to pay me.”

Facts are that preventive maintenance is always cheaper than emergency repairs.

If we get back to our blog title question… The Last Day of June 2014, Are You Thinking AC Repair Yet? – Well are you? Have you seen the National Weather Service forecast for today and the first few days of July? We start Monday June 30th at 110 degrees Fahrenheit.  Tuesday July 1st is expected to be 111 degrees.  Both Wednesday and Thursday are forecast to be one-hundred-twelve degrees Fahrenheit.  They say we will see a real cooling trend on Friday the 4th with temperatures dropping back to only one-hundred-ten degrees, a whole two degrees cooler.

Yes, I know – stop complaining it could be worse… That is true and that usually means lots of phone calls from folks who need rescued from the heat when their AC needs repair.

Just where do you plan to hide from the heat this Fourth of July weekend?

Looking for fast and fair AC Repair? If you live in the Valley of the Sun Aaron’s Mechanical Services wants to help you stay cool and comfortable all year round.  Most important we want you to spend the least amount of money possible while you stay comfortable. AC Repair for the Phoenix Metro Area

If you have gone online and you have done a Google Search for “AC Repair” you get the following message… About 371,000,000 results (0.55 seconds) Now just what are you supposed to do with that many responses?

The top three are paid ads and on the right side are twelve more paid ads.  Is either of those the best way to find a company to do your AC Repair?

What that leaves are the Google Results that are called “Organic” listings, that is from the fourth listing on down.  If you look very, very close you will see a thin line that separates the ads on top from the listing of companies that have found their way into the search results.

And not just online are the AC Repair results confusing.  While the use of the Yellow Pages have declined over the years a few people still use them.  Hundreds of companies are listed in the pages as well.  It is truly a matter of who do you trust and how soon will they get there?  The last thing you want is to be waiting in 100 degrees plus weather only to find that you time for AC Repair has come and gone and the promised tech is no-where to be seen.

You can ask your neighbors, friends, family, co-workers and even complete strangers for their advice and recommendations for AC Repair.  You can use one of the many review and advice sites that feature an AC Repair category and see what is written there.  You know this would be great if you could truly trust what is written there.  People who have a gripe are more likely to leave a complaint that a satisfied person is likely to leave praise.  It is harsh to say but many reviews aren’t real either. Just people who are pumping in false claims.

So is online the best way to get a good result for AC Repair.  Well perhaps we have to admit it is the only way.  But remember to do your homework and ask lots of questions.

Are they listed with the AZ Registrar of Contractors?

How long have they been in business?

It doesn’t work to ask for references … will they give you a bad one?

Do they take time to help on the phone or is it take a number and will call you back?.  (In reality that can happen sometimes even with good companies)

Can we just recommend that you call Aaron’s Mechanical Services at 623-388-4436 to start with and save you some time!

Should You Shop Craigslist For AC Repair or Parts?

To be fair, do you shop Craigslist for anything you buy?  Would you go there looking for a surgeon or family doctor?  Would you look there to find a stock broker?

Many people use Craigslist to find a used car.  Craigslist is a resource for house painters, plumbers, handymen (or should I say handyperson), landscapers and many other products and services.

If you are looking for a licensed, bonded HVAC contractor with many years of experience I guess it doesn’t matter where you find them you just wanted to make sure they are insured, licensed, bonded and do have many years of experience.  Yes, you may find one of those listed in a Craigslist add.

But, beware many folks who do advertise on Craigslist could care less if they meet any type of craftsman’s safety, quality, business ethics or legal compliance.  Will they be around and operating under the same phone number or insurance next year.

The important question is do they stand behind their parts and service promises?

The biggest telltale sign of a Craigslist (or other) scam is if the ad promises a ridiculously good deal. When you're buying from sellers seemingly desperate to get rid of their used stuff, it's hard to know what's a true offer or just bait for your personal info. Know what your product is selling for and, if you have any doubt, pass on it.

Although a lot of items on Craigslist may be great deals, sometimes the prices really don't make sense. In a study, people sold their used ACs on Craigslist for 15% less than the same air conditioner was selling new. The 15% discount, isn't enough of a deal for the hassle of possibly buying a dud. Sellers, apparently, were pricing their items based on the original prices they paid—not the market value at the time, which made them price their used ACs  way too high.

You need to ask yourself why was the unit replaced? Unlike a used car most air conditioners are replaced because the dealer got in new ones. Be cautious of used units being listed as refurbished or remanufactured.

Air Conditioner problems? Who will you call and why will you call them?

The bottom line is simply, be careful using Craigslist.

Evaporative Coolers vs Air Conditioners

While heat pumps are the most energy-efficient cooling system for our local climate, many homes in the Valley are equipped with evaporative coolers. These units perform best when the outside humidity level is very low.

Evaporative coolers and central air conditioners both serve the same important purpose: keeping us cool. But these two cooler systems operate very differently. Understanding the difference can help you get the most out of your system and minimize wasted energy.

An evaporative cooler works by passing warm air through water, thus lowering its temperature. As these evaporative coolers push large volumes of naturally cooled air into your home, they work best when windows or doors are open at the far corners to allow the constant replacement of hot dry air with cool moistened air. Such systems are relatively cheap to run and use less energy than air conditioning.

Refrigerative cooling is often referred to as “air conditioning”. It works on the same principle as refrigerators and moves heat from a cool place to a warm place. It provides the highest standard of comfort in almost any weather by cooling and taking humidity out of the air in the building. Unfortunately it is also expensive to run in terms of energy consumption. Air conditioners produce cold, dry air and work best in an airtight building (windows closed).

If you have both an evaporative cooler and central air conditioning unit serving the same area, do not run them at the same time. Running your evaporative cooler in the morning and switching over to central air conditioning in the hotter part of the day does NOT save money or energy (which is a common misconception). Doing so would cause the two coolers to work against each other (your evaporative cooler spends all morning dumping humidity into your home and your air conditioner must remove the humidity to work effectively). You are simply making your air conditioner work much harder, at the hottest part of the day.

The major advantage of an evaporative cooler is that its operating costs are typically half those of a central air conditioner. However, during the Valley's monsoon season (between July and August) humidity often rises and, when combined with high temperatures, limits cooler effectiveness. For that reason, few Valley homeowners rely exclusively on evaporative cooling.

Disadvantages to evaporative coolers
•Reduced control over temperature in house
•Air is not cleaned as well as with an air conditioner
•Need to open windows or vents to outside
•Damp air can cause doors and wood furniture drawers to swell
•Requires more maintenance than an air conditioner

Cool Arizona Places: Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

Encompassing over 1.2 million acres, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area offers unparalleled opportunities for water-based & back country recreation. The recreation area stretches for hundreds of miles from Lees Ferry in Arizona to the Orange Cliffs of southern Utah, encompassing scenic vistas, geologic wonders, and a vast panorama of human history.

Lake Powell is the heart of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Created by the barrier of Glen Canyon Dam in the Colorado River, Lake Powell is ringed by red cliffs that twist off into 96 major canyons and countless inlets (most accessible only by boat) with huge, red-sandstone buttes randomly jutting from the sapphire waters. It extends through terrain so rugged it was the last major area of the United States to be mapped. You could spend 30 years exploring the lake and still not experience everything there is to see. In the '90s, the Sierra Club and Glen Canyon Institute started a movement to drain the lake to restore water-filled Glen Canyon, which some believe was more spectacular than the Grand Canyon, but these efforts have so far failed to gain significant momentum, and the lake is likely to be around for years to come.

The lake has 1,986 miles of shoreline, and by the time the dam was completed in 1963, it took another 14 years to fill the lake. Since then, Lake Powell has proven to be a premier attraction for millions of visitors from all over the world. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area comprises more than a million acres in southern Utah and northern Arizona surrounding Lake Powell.

South of Lake Powell the landscape gives way to Echo Cliffs, orange-sandstone formations rising 1,000 feet and more above the highway in places. At Bitter Springs the road ascends the cliffs and provides a spectacular view of the 9,000-square-mile Arizona Strip to the west and the 3,000-foot Vermilion Cliffs to the northwest.

Carl Hayden Visitor Center, Page, AZ, daily, Memorial Day - Labor Day, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; daily, November through February, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., rest of year, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day.

Attractions: Free tours of the dam, exhibits, video shows, a relief map of the entire Glen Canyon area. Restrooms and a bookstore. Potential Junior Rangers are invited to come earn a badge.

New dinosaur exhibit at the Carl Hayden Visitor Center! The National Park Service and Bureau of Reclamation bring you the Museum of Northern Arizona's Therizinosaur: the Mystery of the Sickle-Claw Dinosaur exhibit, on display for a year beginning March 2011.

What To Expect Temperature Wise This Summer In Phoenix AZ?

If you don’t like the weather wait a minute and it will change.  Okay, that may be hard to understand when you think of Phoenix Arizona and the summer time.

Today, Tuesday June 17th and tomorrow Wednesday June 18th our temperature will hover right around one-hundred degrees Fahrenheit.  Middle of June in the Phoenix Metro area and the temp running at 100 degrees for two days.  I don’t know about you but I will sure take it and , of course, enjoy it.

We know from experience we still have many days ahead that will run in the one-hundred-ten degrees and above range.  Heck, we will see days that run in the 118 and 119 degree range.  It happens every summer.  When an air conditioner is stressed that hard they can and do fail.

We are coming up on the 26th of June and many of us remember the day that the mercury reached an official record of 122 degrees here in the Phoenix area. It is nice to know that the official high has only reached or exceeded one-hundred-twenty degrees three times since the National Weather Service has been keeping records.

Did You Know?

Have you heard of the heat island effect?  Over the past thirty years the average night time low temperature, in our area, has risen an average of ten to eleven degrees. The cause seems to have several factors.  Replacing vegetation with pavement, building mass increases, exhaust heat from air conditioning units and the increase in average daytime highs.

Greatest number of days with maximum temperatures of 110 or higher: 32 in 2007

It can get worse, the record high in Arizona is 128 degrees on June 29th, 1994 in Lake Havasu City.

Yes, we have had night-time low temps that stayed above 100 degrees.

If you live in the Phoenix metro area we hope you think of Air Conditioner Service and calling Aaron’s Mechanical Services at 623-388-4436 all at the same time.  If it is a emergency, we are available 34/7.  But, we can also do a tune-up so that your Air Conditioning Service need isn’t one that leaves you and your family sweating in the Arizona summer heat.  If that does happens we will get to you as soon as possible.

Air Conditioner problems? Who will you call and why will you call them?

Aaron’s Mechanical Services Celebrates Father’s Day

We know the Fathers aren’t looking for praise: “Just go be a kid and I’ll do the work around here,” is how the tape in their heads runs. Still, we don’t ignore presidential proclamations around here! And we think it’s good for the all children, of all ages, to recognize the special father for all he does.

Fathers' Day is the U.S. celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, though it is also celebrated widely on other days by many other countries.

Since 1966, when President Johnson signed a proclamation setting aside the third Sunday in June to honor all American dads, Father’s Day has been an uncomfortable fit for many men. There’s something a bit off about expecting 7-year-olds to be grateful.

Typically, families gather to celebrate the father figures in their lives. In recent years, retailers have adapted to the holiday by promoting greeting cards and traditionally masculine gifts such as electronics and tools. Schools and other children's programs commonly have activities to make Father's Day gifts.

To fathers, near and far, past and present, by birth or chosen, at the ball game or those deployed... Happy Father's Day - You make my life Special!

Father's Day was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis' Mother's Day in 1909 at Central Methodist Episcopal Church, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father's birthday, the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. Several local clergymen accepted the idea, and on 19 June 1910, the first Father's Day, "sermons honoring fathers were presented throughout the city.

Other cities had held Father’s day celebrations in the years prior to 1910.

Warning Signs That You Needs AC Repair

Do you know the warning sign that your air conditioner need repair? It is always better to look after the problem before it gets worse or before your air conditioning system stops working completely.

Here are some sign to watch for and call Aaron’s Mechanical Services 623-388-4436 for AC Repair that is fast and fair.

Strange Sounds
Squealing, grating, grinding sounds from your air conditioner might be a sign that you need a replacement unit. These noises imply that something is wrong inside the unit. Failure to service the unit could result in a pricey breakdown.

A squealing noise means that the belt has slipped out of place. It may also indicate that a metal component in your air conditioner requires more lubrication. A grinding sound may mean that your motor’s bearings are broken.

Strange Odors
Pungent or foul smells from your air conditioning vents normally means that your conditioner’s wire insulation has burned out. Musty smells generally indicates that there is mold inside your unit or ductwork which must be taken care of without delay.

Moisture Where It Shouldn’t Be
Moisture or leakage around or near your system can be an indication of problems. When you see leaks from your air conditioning system, it can mainly because of two reasons.

In the most serious cases, the leak could be refrigerant. Refrigerant leaks can cause serious health risks to you and your family and need to be repaired at once. You must call an air conditioning repair expert right away.

Water pools adjacent to your air conditioner might show that the drain tube which disposes of the air conditioner condensation is either blocked or broken. This is not as serious an issue, but should be tackled quickly to avoid important problems like mold growth.

Thermostat Problems
At times the trouble is not with the air conditioning unit, but with the thermostat itself. One way to tell if your thermostat is a problem is if one part of your house is very cold while another part remains at the same temperature.

Poor Air Flow
If you are noticing weak or little air flow through your AC vents, the unit’s compressor may be failing. In case your areas or rooms in your home are getting cold air while others are not, then the trouble might be with your duct work and it’s a sign that your AC system needs urgent repair.

Over time, debris can get stuck in your air conditioning vents. Not only this obstructs airflow, but it also presents a health risk to you and your family. Having your air conditioner’s ducts cleaned is a great way to restore airflow and ensure that your AC system is working well when you need it most.

No Cool Air
At some point, you may find that your air conditioning system simply isn’t doing its job. Even at full blast, the air coming from your vents just isn’t as cold as it used to be – or isn’t cold at all. This could be a sign that your system is need of serious repair. For instance, lack of cool air could mean that your system’s compressor has failed. It could also mean that you’re your system’s Freon levels are too low. When that time comes, you might have to to replace the unit.

Cool Arizona Places: Roosevelt Lake

The Salt River once flowed freely from the higher elevations around Phoenix as it ultimately made its way to the Valley of the Sun Greater Phoenix area. Roosevelt Lake was created in 1911 with the completion of the Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River. At the time, Roosevelt Dam was the world's tallest masonry dam at about 280 feet high and Roosevelt Lake was the largest man made lake in the world. In 1996, modification of the dam increased its height to 357 feet and expanded the lake's water storage capacity by 20%. The lake had a multi-purpose of flood control, generation of electricity and harnessing the water for irrigation. The dam, lake and its water distribution system turned the Arizona desert into fertile agricultural land.

Roosevelt Lake is a favorite of avid anglers searching for that trophy largemouth bass along with smallmouth bass, channel catfish and crappie. Depending upon lake capacity that varies with the release of water through the dam, there are miles and miles of beach area for camping along the lake's edges. Water-skiing, jet-skiing, swimming and general boating recreation makes Lake Roosevelt a favorite water recreation destination. The lake features several marinas and fee-based camping sites, and contains a wildlife refuge area. The lake has a general store.

In addition to keeping anglers happy, the waters of the storage reservoir also act as a rest area for migrating waterfowl. A closed-to-access site has been maintained by Game and Fish since 1956, and in cooler months, as many as 3000 wintering Canada geese flock here for refuge and to feed on Bermuda grass and filaree.

The area, which contains three lakes in addition to Roosevelt Lake, has over a million visitors a year. Many make the trip especially to see Tonto National Monument, the cliff dwelling ruins of 25 individual rooms in natural caves overlooking the lake. The well-preserved ruins were inhabited by the Salado Indians in the 1300’s.

The Monsoon is Here Already?

No, Not This Dew Point
You can ask a business associate, friend or family member for an air conditioning repair referral, but that is just one vote about who they have used or know about. Perhaps they are just giving out the name of a company that ran an ad on the radio or television that morning.

Is that a good way to pick an AC Repair contractor?

We would like you to consider Angie’s List you can look at her site through a link on our home page at http://coolingaz.com (It is on the lower right of the page, just above the coupon special.

You could also use YELP to do a search for AC Repair Contractor.  Sorry we don’t have a direct link to them.

In either case you we will see a good cross section of people giving, what all of us would hope would be truly unbiased reports.

Did You Know?

Mid June is now considered the start of our monsoon season.  It used to be that when the Phoenix metro area had three days in a row in which the dew point was at or above 55%, that signaled the start of our monsoon season.

Monsoon for the Valley of the Sun is now June through September regardless of the actual moisture content of the surrounding air mass.

Of course the dew point level is one of those good news – bad news reference points.  Good News; The higher the dew point the more difficult it is to raise the temperature of our air mass. So we have overall cooler days. (If you can ever call 110 degrees Fahrenheit cool.) Bad News; The higher the dew point the more humidity and the more uncomfortable we feel with the combination of heat and humidity.

The real good news is a properly functioning air conditioner is great at removing the humidity from your home’s interior.

Will This Weeks Heat Lead To AC Repair?

If you have looked at the National Weather Service forecast tor the Phoenix Metro area for the week of June 8th you know that the daytime highs for Monday and Tuesday are going to be at least one-hundred-ten degrees Fahrenheit.

We are supposed to see a real cool down here in the Valley of the Sun for Wednesday with the high reaching only 105 degrees.  Most parts of the country call one-hundred-five degrees Fahrenheit “dangerous”. Here it is just another summer day and a bit cooler at that.

Needless to say no matter what you call it the next seven days are going to give your air conditioner a real workout.  Is your AC unit ready for it?  We know you want your home to stay cool and comfortable and Aaron’s Mechanical Services is here to help.  Twenty-four / seven, we are just a phone call away at 623-388-4436.

Did You Know?

The Punta Gorda Ice Plant (also known as the Kazwells Furniture Store) is a historic ice plant in Punta Gorda, Florida, United States. It is located at 408 Tamiami Trail. Currently, it houses a pub and pizzeria. On December 12, 1990, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.  It was originally built in 1913.

Yes, some people really do fill a bowl with ice cubes and use a fan to blow air across the bowl to provide individual cooling.

Fishing boats store their catch in ice cooled tanks so that they can stay out and fish longer before heading back to the docks for the sale of the haul.

Slush ice is an extremely efficient cooling agent for fish. It is capable of reducing fish temperatures to 0 °C very rapidly. This type of ice is mostly used to stow fish in closed containers such as boxes or insulated tubs.

Cool sweet, and crunchy, nothing beats a shaved ice cone on a hot day at the county fair.

Why is your favorite flavor for shaved ices?

Ice cream's origins are known to reach back as far as the second century B.C., although no specific date of origin nor inventor has been indisputably credited with its discovery. We know that Alexander the Great enjoyed snow and ice flavored with honey and nectar. Biblical references also show that King Solomon was fond of iced drinks during harvesting. During the Roman Empire, Nero Claudius Caesar (A.D. 54-86) frequently sent runners into the mountains for snow, which was then flavored with fruits and juices.

3 Ways To Avoid AC Repairs This Summer

They're Here! 110 degree plus temperatures that is. In hopes of helping you save money and time, here are some insider secrets to avoiding the dreaded Valley of the Sun AC downtime.

Routine Maintenance; For Your AC Unit
Unless you have been routinely maintaining your AC system it could fail when you need it most. The number one secret to avoiding costly air conditioning repairs is to have routine maintenance performed on your system. At a minimum your cooling system should be checked annually. While these inspections (Think AC tune up) should only be performed by a licensed HVAC contractor, they are very important to have completed on a regular basis. Manufacturers advise routine annual maintenance regardless of system age or performance; some even require the owner to produce evidence of routine maintenance to qualify for warranties on failed parts.

Clean Air Flow Means the Difference of Life Or Death For Your System
"Change your filters regularly." Hauntingly familiar, like what the dentist says about flossing. If you don't work on air conditioners every day, it's easy to forget and can be as bothersome as any other routine house chore. Find filter replacements, find a screwdriver, find a ladder, etc. Especially if this is a once-a-month requirement. Some newer units use thicker, 5 inch filters which only require changing every 6-8 months. The key here is to change it (or have it changed) according to manufacturer specifications. If it is a one month filter, change it regularly to avoid air conditioning repairs later on. Your AC system will work more efficiently (cheaper for you and less break-downs), and your indoor air quality will improve too.

Knowledge & Experience Your First Line Of Defense
When you do have AC Maintenance or repairs performed, make sure the service tech has 'the right stuff'. The contractor's reputation and warranty policies say a lot.

Get a quoted price before they begin any work. Make sure the contractor is licensed to work in the State of Arizona. Ask how much experience they have. Ask about the company's guarantees, discounts, or special offers.

This could save you some time and headache later on, further hassle on repeat trips if not fixed correctly the first time, or at least a few dollars you can keep in your wallet!

Cool Arizona Places: Be 20 Degrees Cooler in the White Mountains

This weekend, take your children away from the video games and the television. Cool off and enjoy the cool outdoors of the Arizona White Mountains.  You will love being 20 degrees cooler than the Valley of the Sun.

The White Mountains region, located in eastern Arizona, is a high-country, pine-scented retreat dotted with small lakes. The region cradles portions of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, the White Mountain Apache Reservation and communities such as Pinetop-Lakeside, Greer, Springerville and Eagar.

Away from the Phoenix Metro area distractions, children love the activities available to them in the White Mountains. The whole family can have fun while camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and more.

Start your White Mountains adventure in Pinetop-Lakeside’s family friendly Woodland Lake Park, where you’ll find picnic tables, ball fields, a playground and easy trails encircling the small lake. Children will love fishing off the pier.

The park is part of a 583-acre complex that also includes the Big Springs Environmental Study Area, an outdoor classroom for kids, where trails and signage explain wildlife and plant life.

The park and study area are linked by trails that are part of the White Mountains Trail System, more than two-hundred miles of scenic, looping multiuse trails that largely emanate from Pinetop-Lakeside locations.

If your fa,ily would rather ride than walk, try horseback riding. Porter Mountain Stables, just outside Pinetop-Lakeside, is one of several White Mountains stables.  At Porter Mountain Stables, riders aged eight and up can opt for a trail ride to Scott Reservoir or a sunset ride up a mesa.

Children of all ages love to sleep in a tent, especially with the promise of seeing wildlife and plenty of s’mores? You’ll find many developed and dispersed camping areas, but check ahead with the local ranger districts to see which areas may be closed due to the recent Wallow wildfire.Take the kids out on a day hike within the national forest. Try the popular, 14-mile (round-trip) West Baldy Trail.

The first few miles are perfect for younger children – traversing over level footing through a lovely meadow. The last few miles might appeal to more athletic hikers – climbing steep switchbacks up to 11,200 feet along the flanks of Mt. Baldy, the heart of the White Mountains.

Pinetop – Lakeside Take the Beeline Hwy north just three hours and 180 miles away.

Popular DIY, Can It Apply To Air Conditioner Repair?

The term “Do It Yourself” has become so popular it has been replaced, for the most part, by the acronym DIY.

The home handyman (or woman) has discovered that they can successfully take on tasks around the home that in the past were often handled by trade professionals.

In the past a leaky toilet meant a call to a plumber.  Now local home improvement stores carry a full line of replacement parts and offer advice and even full blown classes on plumbing repair.

With DIY being so popular have you ever wondered why it is that you never see air conditioner parts carried in a local Lowes or Home Depot store?

Many air conditioners are on the roof of the home and that roof is from twenty to forty feet in the air.  It may be perched on a roof that is steeply sloped. The air conditioner is powered by 220 to 240 volts AC and at very high amperage (usually 60amps).  There are many different brands and models on the market.  Even the same models will have variations (based on when and where the unit was manufactured).

Would a local store want to take on that “stocking” and training task?  Would they get in trouble if someone that they instructed in AC Repair fell off their roof?

Yes, the Internet offer advice on DIY AC Repair.  But, can you trust the information to be correct and up-to-date? What about the new EPA regulations on Freon recovery?

Do you want to be on your roof, 20 plus feet in the air?  When it is 110 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit up there? Where you could get an electrical shock that would likely be fatal? How will you know where to start your diagnosis of the problem?  A dead AC unit can have many, many causes.

Are you sure you flipped off the right circuit breaker? Sure, if it was marked right in the first place. On my house it wasn’t.  The AC and electric stove were switched.

Have you read the right book? Do you have the correct test equipment and tools?

Sometimes it is best to start by calling the professionals to do the job right the first time. It will be cheaper if I’m fixing just the part that broke. It will cost more if I have to fix what you broke while trying to figure out what was wrong with your air conditioner.

Doing the DIY projects around your house is usually a great idea. Doing a DIY repair on your air conditioner isn’t ever a good idea.
