Hybrid Gas / Electric Heating And Cooling Systems

The latest craze in the heating and air conditioning industry seems to be the new gas/electric hybrid heating and cooling systems. While split system hybrid units can be more fuel efficient than a hybrid gas pack, the split system won't fit in every situation. Split systems consist of a heat pump/air conditioner, that is married to a high efficient gas furnace. For those of you who have an attic, a crawl space, or an inside closet, this split unit combination is perfect, but in some homes, it simply won’t fit.

Finally a solution has arrived -- a hybrid gas/electric packaged unit that sits outside your home and serves as both an air conditioner and high efficient heating system.

The concept of using fossil fuels along with electricity to increase the efficiency of a heating system isn’t new, however, electronic technology and the high cost of fuel is now making hybrid gas-pacs affordable for the average home owner.

Hybrid gas-pacs take advantage of both heat pump & gas technologies and automatically switches to the one most efficient for the outdoor temperature. When it is chilly (above 40ºF), the system operates off of electricity, providing the heat pump’s steady, mellow heat. But when it turns cold, the hybrid gas-pac automatically switches to its internal gas furnace and its warmer, toasty air. The result is the ultimate in comfort.

Actual savings may vary based on the utility rate of any given month, how you use your system, and of course, the weather. With today’s skyrocketing energy prices, a hybrid gas-pac, could save you as much as 38% over last year’s bill.

In short, a hybrid gas-pac offers homeowners a more efficient way to heat and cool their homes, all in one compact, outside unit.

The big question for you is, Are you truly comfortable in your home this winter? If you aren’t, isn’t it time to give Aaron’s Mechanical Service a call and see how we can help you?

Our Coldest Day Yet

Today is one of the coldest yet this year, with temperatures dipping to near freezing in most of the Phoenix Metro area. Was your home warm and cozy when you woke this morning?

What’s the best type of heating system for you? Well, in the Phoenix area we don’t use very much heat. Our energy expenditures usually break down to about 25% heating, 75% cooling. Our temperatures do not get nearly as cold as they do in other regions.

There’s the heat pump system, which is a reverse flow air conditioning unit. Next, there are gas furnaces. Third, and this is something you tend not to see a lot of anymore, there are heaters with an internal electrical strip. These have pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur as we’ve found more energy efficient heating alternatives.

In most cases, the heat pump system serves Phoenix residents best. It’s a matter of preference, what a customer is used to, because the gas furnace will typically pump out of the registers about 130 degrees or better of heat, while the heat pump will pump out about 105 degrees of heat. So, depending on how hot is too hot, that will help you make a decision right there. That said, the gas furnace does not blow as hard. So, a gas furnace just doesn’t cover as much square footage as effectively as a heat pump. That means that, in spite of lower temperature output, the heat pump actually makes up for it by producing more air flow than a gas furnace.

Another consideration really depends on the outdoor temperature. If it’s really, really cold, obviously a gas furnace would produce more heat. Plus, some older heat pump units can go into defrost mode on a super cold day, but it’s very seldom that that happens. The heat pump units have become more and more efficient of late. Then, there’s the cost of natural gas to take into account. Natural gas is expensive and will continue to be expensive.

Generally, in terms of operational costs, gas furnaces and heat pump units are neck and neck – at least in terms of what you’re going to pay for your heating bills.

Finally, there’s one other option to consider: the dual fuel unit. This is a gas furnace and heat pump all in one. So, on the days where it’s not so cold out it’ll actually run as a heat pump. Then, if we drop below a certain temperature, it will switch to gas furnace mode. and then it will switch onto the gas furnace. This is truly smart system and the ultimate system to have in my opinion.  Unfortunately, very few Phoenix homeowners are aware that dual fuel systems even exist . They do tend to cost a bit more from the outset. Still, over time, they provide greater efficiency and energy savings, not to mention, better overall comfort.

If you’re curious about how to proceed with a home heating installation or repair, how to make your home more energy efficient year-round, or how to choose the right cooling system for your space give Aaron’s Mechanical Services a call 623-388-4436.

Not Just “Deck the Halls” But Warm The Halls

"Deck the Halls" or "Deck the Hall", the original title, is a traditional Yuletide or Christmas and New Years' carol. The melody is Welsh dating back to the sixteenth century, and belongs to a winter carol, Nos Galan.

The lyrics first appeared in Welsh Melodies, a set of four volumes authored by John Thomas with Welsh words by John Jones and English words by Thomas Oliphant, although the repeated "fa la la" goes back to the original Welsh Nos Galan and may originate from medieval ballads.

The song is in AABA form. The series Welsh Melodies appears in four volumes, the first two in 1862, the third in 1870 and the final volume in 1874. As can be seen from the translation of Nos Galan below, Deck the Hall(s) is not a translation but new words to an old song.

The melody of "Deck the Hall" is taken from "Nos Galan" ("New Year's Eve"), a traditional Welsh New Year's Eve carol published in 1794, although it is much older. The Welsh and English lyrics as translated there are as follows:

Oh! how soft my fair one's bosom,
fal lal lal lal lal lal lal lal la:
Oh! how sweet the grove in blossom,
fal lal lal lal lal lal lal lal la:
Oh! how blessed are the blisses,
[instrumental flourish]
Words of love, and mutual kisses,
fal lal lal lal lal lal lal lal la:

That is a bit different than the song we now sing.  Originally, carols were dances and not songs. The accompanying tune would have been used as a setting for any verses of appropriate metre. Singers would compete with each other, verse for verse — known as canu penillion dull y De ("singing verses in the southern style"). Tunes originally used to accompany carols became separated from the original dances, but were still referred to as "carols".

The connection with dancing is made explicit in the English lyrics by the phrase "follow me in merry measure" as "measure" is a synonym for dance. A collection of such sixteenth and seventeenth century dances danced at the Inns of Court in London are called the Old Measures. Dancing itself having been previously suppressed by the church was revived during the renaissance beginning in fifteenth century Italy.

Comfort and the Cold of December in Arizona

Cold and wet are terms that you don’t usually associate with the Arizona desert.  But for the last few days that has been the case.  How did your heating system do?

The local forecast by the Weather Channel for the next ten days shows the overnight temperatures running in the mid thirties to the low forties.  Do you want to stay warm and keep your heating bills as low as possible?

Have you had your heating system checked or serviced?  Would it benefit from a tune-up?  Getting Aaron’s Mechanical Service to stop by and check your system is a simple as making a phone call.

Here are some heating safety tips to consider.

Safety Tip: It's highly recommended that you invest in a carbon monoxide alarm for the inside of your home. This will alert you if potentially dangerous carbon monoxide gas levels get too high in your living space.

Safety Tip: Keep the area around the furnace clean and unobstructed for safety and accessibility.

Safety Tip: Have the "high limit" on your furnace checked to prevent overheating.

Safety Tip:  Have your flue products checked for carbon monoxide levels.

Safety Tip: Space heaters should be of good quality, solid construction and design, and should be evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

Safety Tip: Keep a glass or metal screen in front of any fireplace opening, to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out, unwanted material from going in, and help prevent the possibility of burns to occupants.

Holiday Safety Tips For Home Heating

It is easy to think that a home fire would never happen to your family, but there are more potential risks around your home than you may think – especially during the winter months. Fires grow so quickly that it can take just seconds for a spark to fill a room with toxic smoke. A recent study showed that within three seconds of ignition, a dry scotch pine is completely ablaze; within 40 seconds, a flashover occurs that engulfs the entire room and releases dense, deadly, toxic smoke.

First, be prepared. Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the home and near sleeping areas. You should test your alarms every week and make sure that you can hear them from behind closed doors. Involve children in the testing so that they know what the alarm sounds like and what they should do if it goes off. You should also change the batteries at least twice a year. An easy way to remember to change the batteries is to do it every time you change the clock for daylight savings time.

Be sure your family has a fire escape plan in place. Make a quick drawing of the floorplan of your home and identify at least two exits from every room. Go over the plan with your kids and identify a meeting place outside of the house such as the mailbox or neighbor’s driveway. Be sure to hold a fire drill and practice getting out of the house with your children at least twice a year. Families with infants or very young children should plan how to get those children out. Older children can be taught to stay low in case of fire, feel doors before opening them and never return to a house once they have gotten out.

It’s no surprise that home heating fires peak during the winter months. With increased fireplace use, chimney fires are a greater risk, as are fires caused by errant sparks. Take a minute for safety today and call to have your chimney inspected and cleaned.

The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends cleaning once a year to reduce the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning due to creosote build-up or obstructions in the chimney. Also, always use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from getting out of the fireplace. Never burn wrapping paper in the fireplace as it can cause an intense burst of heat that can lead to a fire.

In addition to fireplaces causing unintentional fires, space heaters are involved in a large number of home fires. In fact, space heaters are responsible for the majority of fatal home heating fires. The most common cause of a space heater fire is leaving it too close to something that can burn such as a blanket or curtains. Space heaters should be positioned at least three feet away from objects and placed on a firm surface to prevent tipping. Never leave a space heater unattended and always shut them off before going to bed. Objects such as coats and mittens should never be placed on a space heater to dry.

Cool Arizona Places: Kinishba Ruins

Kinishba Ruins is a sprawling, 600 room great house archaeological site in eastern Arizona and is administered by the Southern Athabaskan-speaking White Mountain Apache Tribe of the nearby Fort Apache Indian Reservation. As it demonstrates a combination of indigenous Mogollon and Anasazi cultural traits, archaeologists consider it ancestral to the peoples of both the Hopi and Zuni cultures.

Kinishba is located at 5,000 feet above a pine-fringed alluvial valley, near Whiteriver, Arizona, the seat of government for the White Mountain Apache Tribe. The first European to write about it was Adolph Bandelier in 1892, who was a pioneering archaeologist. From 1931 to 1940, the archaeologist Dr. Byron Cummings, Director of the Arizona State Museum and head of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Arizona, led a team of archaeology students and Apache over several seasons to excavate and restore Kinishba. He named the site, derived from the Apache words: ki datbaa, meaning "brown house." The teams also built a pueblo-style museum and visitor's center, as Cummings envisioned it as a destination to help with economic development of the area. Cummings hoped Kinishba would be declared a national monument and taken under National Park Service management, but did not succeed in this.

Historians have devoted a great deal of ink to the Apache wars, mostly focusing on the Chiricahua Apaches of southern Arizona. But a group of Western Apaches allowed American soldiers to build a fort near what is now Whiteriver in the White Mountains. Fort Apache, a military post from 1870-1922, played an important role in the conflict. You can tour some of the historical buildings and learn about Apache life at a museum just a few steps away. About 5 miles away is the Kinishba ruin, a pueblo village that dates to about 1250. It had two or three stories, hundreds of rooms, and is believed to have housed as many as 1,000 people.

All of these large villages were built up from apartment-style room blocks, laid out to define communal courtyards or plazas. The Kinishba pueblo is composed of nine major building mounds, the remains of masonry room blocks, with some three stories tall. There were two large apartment blocks, and several smaller buildings, with two communal courtyards. The masonry walls are unique for their double-walled construction: one side is faced and the other made of rubble. The rooms averaged 12' by 14', with a fire-pit in the center. Scholars believe that most families occupied two rooms, one for living quarters and one for storage.

Location: Seven miles west of Whiteriver Arizona, off AZ 73 on Fort Apache Indian Reservation. 520-338-4625

Heating Systems; To Repair or Replace?

With the temperature this morning dipping into the thirties it is right now that your furnace or heat pump will need to be working to keep your home comfortable.  If your heating system needs to be checked and brought up to snuff before the winter season has you shivering, call Aaron’s Mechanical Service at 623-388-4436.

If you found this morning that your heating system wasn’t working at all give us a call to get it running again. In some cases your system may need to be replaced.

There are usually two major reasons why you are choosing to replace your forced-air furnace. The first is that your furnace does not function. It has just broken down, irrevocably, or it has been “red-tagged” or condemned by gas inspectors. If it is winter, and your house is getting colder quickly, you may not have the luxury of making a reasoned choice on what to buy next.

The second situation is that your furnace is getting old, or your fuel bills are becoming too excessive to tolerate. In this case, you have the time to shop around and get the best furnace and fuel for your situation.

You probably do not need a furnace with the output of your current furnace. Most furnaces in Arizona houses can provide far more heat than the house requires. A properly sized furnace will be running almost continuously during the coldest day of the winter. Having a furnace of a correct size will result in efficient operation during the whole heating season. A grossly oversized furnace will run only for a short period, never coming up to peak efficiency. Note, however, that sizing may not be a big issue with high-efficiency, condensing gas furnaces. Due to the design of condensing appliances, they are efficient even when oversized.

Many folks choose to use a heat pump that is part of your HVAC system and will find that on very cold days it doesn’t do as well at warming your house as it does at cooling it.  On very cold days you may want to consider a gas pack to add more heating capabilities to your heat pump.

Cold Weather Energy Saving Tips

For many, spending money on major home improvement projects to make a home more energy efficient just isn’t in the cards this year.

You do not have to spend a bunch of money to cut your heating costs. Below you will find nine tips on how to save money on energy bills without breaking the bank. Each tip should cost from nothing to very little. Follow these ideas that all of us should have thought of a decade ago, and say good-bye to shocking heating bills.

After baking cookies or making dinner in the oven, leave the door open a crack. There’s a lot of heat in that oven, so letting it escape puts the heat to good use by warming up the kitchen and surrounding rooms meaning the furnace has to run a little bit less.

Turn the heat down at night, when off to work or shopping. This doesn’t mean turn the heat to 40 degrees, but turning it down to 58 overnight or while you’re away can make a big difference. Think about it; why keep it 70 degrees when you’re either sleeping or out of the house for more than 12 hours a day? You can adjust the thermostat manually for free, but if you want to spend a few bucks a programmable thermostat is a great investment.

Bundle up! Running around with shorts and a tank top in the middle of winter just doesn’t make much sense. Winter is winter because it is cold, so act like it even if you’re just sitting around the house. Put on a sweater or sweatshirt, wear socks and fuzzy slippers. Place a soft, comfy blanket on the couch to cuddle up in while watching TV, reading or chatting with friends. Put throw rugs on hardwood and tile floors to eliminate the shock of the ice cold surfaces. It doesn’t cost anything to wear warmer clothes inside and by doing so you can keep the temperature inside the house a few degrees cooler and save big.

Use a space heater only in the current room you are hanging out in. This will take the nip out of the air to make you feel more comfortable without heating all of the other rooms in the house and wasting energy.

Smart Thermostats Help Save Money

Would you like to save between 20 and 50 percent on your heating bills this winter?  Using some “smart” home ideas and a smart thermostat you can.

There are programmable thermostats and then there are smart thermostats.  With a  programmable thermostat you can save by setting time zones when people are home and when people aren’t home and use that pattern to save energy while people are away.  During those times you can  keep your house cooler and not spend as much on heating costs.

What makes a “smart” thermostat better?  First they have sensors that monitor what is going on in your house on a real time basis.  If you leave for work an hour early the smart thermostat will detect that the house is empty and lower the temperature an hour sooner than one that is based just on time.

When coupled with a heating system that can be zoned (each room being individually controlled) it can adjust rooms so unoccupied ones are allowed to cool versus ones that are occupied and need to be warmer.

Smart thermostats can monitor the outside temperature and take that into consideration while heating your house.  They can even be set to monitor forecast patterns and figure that information into their heating program.

Using a security protocol or wifi connection they can be reprogrammed or adjusted from a smart phone or computer as well.

If you are using solar water heating as part of your heating and water heating processes the smart thermostat can help manage the two or a combined system to make sure you have both heat and hot water when you need them.

In an office environment a smart thermostat can also monitor critical temperature needs and correct or notify a user if there is a problem.  If you have a tropical fish tank and expensive aquatics you will not find a tragedy when returning from a weekend off.

Changing Filters During Winter Heating Season

When do I need to clean my heating and air conditioning system filter? Do I need to change them more often during the winter heating season?

Clean and replace furnace filters regularly to keep your heating and air conditioning system running at top efficiently. Dirty and dusty filters are the reason for nearly half the repair calls to service technicians.

Keep in mind that dirty or plugged filters can actually damage your system components because they reduce air flow that your system needs to run within proper tolerances.  A plugged filter in the heating season for example, could cause damage to your heat exchanger due to high heat from lack of air flow.

When buying replacement filters, there are different types to meet your needs. Keep in mind that some filters are better than others at keeping allergens out of the air.

Disposable or washable filters work fine at keeping your furnace clean. They collect large particles, but may not keep out mold spores, pollen and other allergens.

Pleated filters may be a better choice for reducing allergens. They can cost as little as $5 or $10 but price does depend on size so be sure to measure your filter to know your exact needs. These may cost more but they also provide more effective filtration.

A high-efficiency pleated air filter costs around $250 to $450. Depending on your system capacities however, these may not be advisable due to increased pressure drop.  Contact our service department for information and help.

Electronic air cleaners work best at removing dust, mold and other pollutants from the air. They're more expensive, too. Because these units are integral to your central heating and air conditioning system, costs will depend on your particular installation. But the cost may be offset by lower health care bills and a more comfortable indoor environment.  Ask our staff to schedule a free in-home estimate to see if this is the right solution for you.

What Sustainable Heat Sources Can You Use?

Here is the Valley of the Sun we have very mild winters and most people heat their homes with either natural gas of electric energy.  Unless the electricity is generated from solar or wind energy neither can be considered sustainable.

In a few cases the use of propane gas is also a heat source here in Arizona.

The proper use of space heaters can reduce the amount of electric energy consumed but is just a reduction and not a sustainable move.  Homeowners have more choices than those that rent when it comes to using sustainable resources.

While the use of fireplaces and wood burning stoves are on the sustaining side they are usually restricted or banned in apartments due to their increased risk of uncontrolled fires.

Wood burners are very much a sustainable resources as you can always grow new trees.  But in large cities they can become a pollution source and their use can be banned when the air quality is threatened.  Many times the conditions that lead to bitter cold nights are also when the pollution levels are on the rise.  The last thing you want is for an inversion layer and cold air to combine when many people are trying to use fireplaces and wood burning stoves for their heating.

Wind and solar power can be used to charge batteries so that their energy output can be used whenever they are need for heating.  Again this favors homeowners over rental properties.

The use of thermal energy is also restricted to those with properties.  Using the trapped heat below your yard can be very useful for winter heating and summer cooling as the temperature is a very stable 50 to 60 degrees.  If your heat exchanger is working at that level both heating and cooling is done very efficiently.
