Choosing The Right AC Repair Service

First and foremost in Arizona you need to know if they are a ROC licensed contractor.  Contractor licensing, quality control and oversight. The Arizona Registrar of Contractors also helps resolve issues and provide compensation to consumers.  Ask for their ROC License number.

Are they trained and experienced with the specific make and model you're having repaired or installed?

Certification simply means that they've proven that they know what they're doing. Many contractors, especially the less expensive ones, know the basic process, but they might not know the specific details associated with your make and model -- they're not certified. Working with a certified AC installer makes it a lot less likely that you'll need that bond/insurance we just discussed.

Has the air conditioning company been in business for a while?

"A while" might seem a bit vague, but it's a mostly subjective question. There is no hard-and-fast rule that says 'every HVAC contractor that's been in business for many years is a good one' -- but by and large, poorly run AC businesses don't stay in the business for long. Look for someone who's been around for a while and you're much more likely to find excellent (and prompt) customer service.

Is the air conditioning company insured?

Also called 'bonded', a properly insured contractor or company will be able to pay for any damage they incur to your home in the installation process if something should go wrong. Simply put, working with an uninsured air conditioning company is like playing scratch lotto, but in negative numbers -- it's likely nothing will go wrong, but if it does, you're suddenly out hundreds or thousands of dollars and there's nothing you can do about it.

Are they accredited with the Better Business Bureau?

The statement that they are a BBB Accredited Business in good standing says, “ They are an ethical business who cares about their community." The BBB Logo or plaque prominently displayed at their place of business, on their website or in advertisements, should give a favorable first impression and a competitive advantage.

Get Your Arizona Air Conditioning Ready For Summer

Sweltering temperatures are just around the corner, and your best defense is a central air-conditioning system. If you have one at your house, there are a few things you can do to make sure that it's tuned up and ready to go when the summer sun arrives.

Check Your Ductwork

There are two areas here worth checking. The first is the registers in your house. Make sure that there are no rugs or furniture obstructing the airflow. Then open them up and see if anything has gotten into the ductwork that could cause problems. If you have toddlers around, it's anyone's guess what's in there.

If you find mold growing in your ducts, it's worthwhile to contact a duct-cleaning company. For a little cash, they can do a thorough cleaning of your entire system.

The second place to check is the ductwork that travels through your attic. All of the connections and seams should be sealed, with no holes or corrosion. To cover any holes and seal the joints, use silver aluminum-foil tape, as opposed to the traditional duct tape.

If you have an roof system, pay close attention to the insulation on the supply duct, the one that brings the cool air back to your house. With no insulation, that cold metal can start to sweat in your hot attic and the condensation will drip onto your ceilings.

Change the Filters

These are located at the blower unit and are usually placed where the return duct meets the unit. You should check your filters once a month. A badly clogged filter slows down the airflow through the blower unit, allowing the cooling coil to ice up. This could cause your unit to shut down.

There are many grades of filters available. If you use the kind that reduces allergens, know that they're going to clog up faster, so they should be checked more often.

Check Your AC Pan or Drain

When hot air passes through the cooling coil, condensation occurs. Air-conditioning systems have a variety of ways of dealing with this. Depending on where your blower unit is located, this moisture may go into a gravity-fed drain, or it may go into a pan under the blower unit. If it's in a basement, the pan may have a small pump to move the water to a drain. If the unit is in an attic, the water may just enter the pan and evaporate.

Helping you save money is our mission. We don’t do insulation, but we can help with AC repair. Give Aaron’s Mechanical Service a call at 623-388-4436 for the right advice on your AC Unit!

Did You Use Your AC Yesterday?

Are you one of the people who used their AC for the very first time this year.  Was Monday the day that you moved your thermostat to the “Cool” setting for this cooling season?  Did you hold your breath waiting to find out if your air conditioner was going to work?

Do you know that even if your AC was up and running and cooling your home for this low 90 degree day that doesn’t mean that it will work efficiently when the temperatures are pushing 115 degrees plus later on this summer.

There are very few places in the world that expect that their air conditioners to handle temperatures of over 110 degrees for more than 10 days straight, but Phoenix Arizona is one of the very few.

In the U.S. the desert around Phoenix, the Palm Springs CA area and Death Valley CA rank right up there with Phoenix itself.  Many people think of Texas and New Mexico as also being hot and they are, but they never reach and hold the high temperature that the Valley of the Sun does.

Without a properly maintained Air Conditioner keeping cool in Phoenix can see electric bills north of $500 a month during the summer months.  Yet a simple tune up can save your hundreds of dollars over the year.

A tune-up can lead to more than a reduction in your electric bill.  It will mean you are more comfortable this cooling season.  The last thing you want to happen is that your AC Unit to fail and leave you sweating or worse on a day when the temperatures push over 100 degrees.

So, even if you are cooling off now with the afternoon running over 90 degrees, don’t wait till your AC stops as the afternoon temps pass the century mark.

A real Phoenix related heat tip: Cotton clothing will help keep you cooler than most synthetics.

Here Comes The Heat

Monday April 22nd and here in Phoenix Arizona we can now say “Here Comes The Heat”.  According to the Weather Channel, with the exception of one day the temperature will be 95 or 96 degrees Fahrenheit.

As is typical this time of year there is no rain or even clouds in their forecast.

I know I can’t speak for everyone but, that means that some time in the afternoon I am going to rely on my Air Conditioner to keep me comfortable.

Have you even done a test run of your AC Unit this season?  Have you changed your air filter yet?  How will you’re a/C unit work when you first need it to run?

Here in the Valley of the Sun you are going to need to cool off your house today or tomorrow.  Is it time for your yearly check-up?  It’s not too late.

Typically in Phoenix, the on ground temperatures on asphalt or concrete will run 15 to 20 degrees higher than the air temperatures.  That means your house will warm up as the days go on.

So what do you have planned to help cool off this time a year.  Do you barbeque more so that you don’t heat up your kitchen?   Is a quick swim in the pool part of your afternoon plans?

Remember to stay hydrated as the heat rises you need to drink more water to stay healthy.  Do you know the signs and symptoms or heat related problems?

Muscle cramps
Moist, clammy skin
Rapid and shallow breathing
Dizziness, confusion
Heavy sweating
Slight increase in body temperature
Pale complexion
Nausea
Extreme fatigue or weakness

Do Patio Misters Really Help?

As the spring temperatures rise in the Phoenix Metro area we tend to do more outdoor cooking.  As our afternoon temps past 100° we look for ways to cool off the patio.

Many of us install the “Patio Misters” to help that cooling off process.  Do they work and how much cooling can we expect.  The dew point is the basis of how well they work.

How does a patio mister work? Well it depends on which system you use. There are basically two types of misting systems on the market. One is an expensive system that utilizes a pump to pressurize the water and send it through pipes and tubing to spray out a nozzle in a fine mist. The finer the spray, the quicker it will evaporate, creating a cooling sensation. A good system will lower the ambient air temperature up to 30 degrees.

There are several different versions of the more expensive system, the main difference being the pump itself. In the lesser quality systems, the pump is fairly loud. With the high end systems, the pump is almost silent. You can build a screen around the pump and eliminate most of the noise and hide the system out of sight.

The inexpensive systems rely on the household water pressure to send the water out the spray nozzles. At one time, the quality on this type system was disappointing. The droplets were very large, which resulted in a light rain falling on you and your patio, getting everything wet in the process. It also only lowered the ambient air temperature about 10 to 15 degrees.

However, for most of us, we are limited to how much we can spend on a misting system. You can choose an inexpensive system, that hooks up to your garden hose, which will produce large droplets and soak everything on your patio. Or, for about the same price, you can get a better quality system that will produce results like the systems that cost ten times as much.

When it comes to patio misting systems, it pays to do the research and find which system produces the best results.

Chase away mosquitoes, flies, yellow jackets...whatever nasty critters you have flying around! Insects naturally move away from the mist created by our patio misters. Surround your family with a cooling mist and keep those bugs away at the same time. Many customers tell us the systems would be worth the price for this impact on insects alone. You experience the cooling as an added bonus!

Cool Arizona Places: Montezuma’s Castle

Montezuma Castle National Monument encompasses 826 acres and lies in the Verde Valley at the junction of the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range physiographic provinces. Although the climate is arid with less than 12 inches of rainfall annually, several perennial streams thread their way from upland headwaters to the Verde Valley below, creating lush riparian ribbons of green against an otherwise parched landscape of rolling, juniper-covered hills.

On December 8, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt celebrated the passage of the Antiquities Act by declaring four sites of historic and cultural significance as our nation's first National Monuments. Among these was Montezuma Castle, which the President identified as a place "of the greatest ethnological value and scientific interest." Although very few original artifacts remained in the structure due to intensive looting of the site, Roosevelt's decision assured the continued protection of one of the best preserved prehistoric cliff dwellings in North America.

Early visitors to the monument were allowed access to the structure by climbing a series of ladders up the side of the limestone cliffs. However, due to extensive damage to this valuable cultural landmark, public access of the ruins was discontinued in 1951.

From the mineral-rich Black Hills to the south, to the red and white sandstone country of Sedona and the basalt-capped palisades of the Mogollon Rim to the north, to the limestone hills of the Verde Valley, the dynamic nature of the Earth's geologic processes is evident in the landforms surrounding the monument.

The monument contains numerous species of plants, such as mesquite, catclaw, and saltbush, which have adapted to life in an arid environment, but, due to the micro-habitats provided by the riparian corridors, also hosts populations of moisture-loving plants such as monkeyflower and columbine. The tall, large-leaved mesic species of trees, such as sycamore and cottonwood, found only in the riparian corridors, stand in stark contrast to the xeric species found on neighboring lands. The unique aquatic habitat found in Montezuma Well, a collapsed limestone sinkhole, contains organisms found nowhere else in the world which have evolved in response to the unique mineralization of the water.

AC Versus Swamp Coolers

The dew point used to be an important weather indicator to metro Phoenix residents who watched for a reading lower than 55, which meant they could run their evaporative coolers.  Evaporative coolers use water and a fan to cool outside air and bring it into a building, in the past requiring less electricity than air-conditioners.

The units providing low-cost cooling were common in neighborhoods across the region starting in the 1940s, but have been in sharp decline since the late '80s.

Now the metal boxes atop homes are rare, done in by a combination of cheap and increasingly energy-efficient air-conditioning and the time and expense of maintaining the coolers.

Arizonans steadily have moved away from using the sometimes noisy, always drippy evaporative coolers, even though they may reduce energy bills.

Arizona Public Service Company estimates that less than 10 percent of its customers use an evaporative cooler and that less than 3 percent rely on a cooler without air-conditioning. In 1984, nearly half its customers had coolers and a quarter of them used them without an air-conditioner.  Salt River Project estimates that about 14 percent of its customers have evaporative coolers.

Most residents who still use them are either extremely cost-conscious, handy at fixing the units, or both.  Auto shops, gyms, warehouses and other industrial buildings with large areas to keep cool still commonly rely on cost-efficient evaporative coolers.

Homeowners, however, are a different story.  Evaporative coolers struggle to cool homes in the extreme heat and humidity of July, August and September in the greater Phoenix area, so it was common for people to use air-conditioning then and rely on the coolers in milder months.

Experts list many reasons swamp coolers - a term Niskern finds derogatory - have faded. New air-conditioners are much more efficient, which means people save less on their power bill by switching from air-conditioners to evaporative coolers. New housing developments are limiting coolers' use on roofs. And people are just happy to use an air-conditioner that rarely needs repairs vs. a cooler that needs rooftop service at least twice annually.

Coolers require new pads, they use water, and some people rely on service technicians to clean them out annually, all adding to the cost.  The higher the outside humidity, the less cooling the units offer, which is why they often struggle to provide comfort during the summer monsoon.  As the metro heat island grows nights aren't as cool as they used to be, and evaporative coolers don't provide the same amount of comfort as they once did.

Outdoor Tips For Cooling Your Home

The way we landscape or decorate the exterior of our home can decrease our indoor cooling energy consumption and save us money. Looking to nature for ideas will take you far in your home cooling efforts.

Plant Wisely
Planting crawling vines along the south and west sides of your home or on trellises in front of windows can help insulate the house as well. You can do this with edible vines such as grapevines, for added utility.

Plant The Right Trees
They will also help shade your home from the hot summer sun. And when they drop their leaves in the winter, they will assist in passive solar heating.

Consider Awnings
Used on the south or west facing windows, they will block the angle of the sun coming through the window during he summer while allowing the lower angled winter sun to come in and warm the home.

Reflective Window Film
Residential window tint adds sun control and privacy without sacrificing style. Home window tinting reduces fading and provides UV protection. 3M safety films improve window safety from attempted break-ins and severe weather.

Invest In Solar Shade Screens
Solar shade screens on the outside of windows make a huge difference and are worth the investment. They can be removed during the winter.

Need To Paint?
If your house is in need of a paint job, consider lighter colors which deflect rather than absorb the light.

Redoing Your Roof?
Light-colored roof shingles also help decrease any heat absorption by deflecting sunlight.  Roof based heat reflective insulation will also help.

Cool Arizona Places: Walnut Canyon National Monument

Come gaze across the curved canyon walls! Among the remarkable geological cliff formations of the canyon itself, the shapes of the former homes of ancient inhabitants of Walnut Canyon are easily evident. On a hike along the Rim or Island Trails you can imagine what life was like along and within Walnut Canyon while visiting actual pueblos and walking in the steps of those who came before us.

It has been more than 700 years since Walnut Canyon echoed with the words and sounds of a vital pueblo community. The Island Trail leads you back in time, and welcomes you into the world of the people archeologists call Sinagua. You'll see 25 cliff dwelling rooms along the trail; more are visible across the canyon. Spectacular canyon scenery and plantlife. It is a strenuous hike, especially for those not acclimated to 7,000' elevation. The trail descends 185 vertical feet into the canyon, and returns the same way. The trail is paved, but not accessible to wheelchairs, due to steep canyon terrain and many stairs.

This is a self-guided trail along the canyon rim and through ponderosa forest. You'll see 2 canyon overlooks, plus a pithouse and pueblo set back from the canyon rim. This upland area is also where crops were grown. The hike is easy and fairly level. The first part of the trail, leading to the first canyon overlook, is paved and accessible.

Walnut Canyon has been protected since 1904, first as part of the San Francisco Mountain Reserve (later Coconino National Forest). Early caretakers lived in a log cabin on the canyon rim. Walnut Canyon National Monument was established in 1915, one year before the National Park Service.

Walnut Canyon National Monument is located approximately 7.5 miles east of Flagstaff.

Weird Weather For A Phoenix Spring

Even though this week is going to be a strange one weather wise, and usually here in the Phoenix Metro area we’re saying goodbye Winter and hello to Spring and Summer, we all know it’s only a matter of time before Summer heat is upon us, and with that comes air conditioner weather.

With a real dust storm and rain in the our area and snow fall in the north and higher elevations April in Arizona is normally much warmer.  So here are some spring time AC tips.

If your Air Conditioner is a ground based one… Clear the area around your unit.  This is a no-brainer, but sometimes we need to be reminded of this simple but important task. Just make sure the unit doesn’t have any debris on, over or around it, and that it’s not getting massive amounts of water pouring into it. Check your roof edge gutters. Doing this is essential to bringing in clean air into the home, and of course that air is used to cool as well.

We can say it often enough… Check your indoor air filters.  Some homes have multiple filters, so we won’t get into that, but just know how many you have, and when you need to change them. Some need to be replaced yearly, and some permanent filters require regular care to get the best out of the system.  If you use paper filters you want to check them or replace them at least monthly.  Every time the valley goes through a major dust storm you need to check your filters.  If it is around the time you would normally replace them just do that with no need to check them.

Time to test your AC unit… Last but not least, turn the unit and the thermostat on, and make sure everything is running accordingly. Did the unit turn on automatically at what seems to be a certain temperature? Does the unit start and run quietly or is it making a humming noise?

All of these problems and tips can be taken care of by a trained HVAC technician, and we’d recommend you consult with an expert before getting serious with Freon or specialized filters.

Is Air Conditioning Repair A DIY Project?

To save money is a major push these days for homeowners.  That is something we completely understand.  But, trying to turn air conditioner repair into a Do-It-Yourself project is not one we can recommend.

Every so often, I run across articles on the Internet about DIY air conditioning repairs.

In the Phoenix metro area most Air Conditioners are on the roof.  Climbing up to the top of your roof is not something that we feel is safe for many people.  If you have a tile based roof surface it is even much more dangerous.  On a hot summer day it is hotter on your roof than what the weather service or TV is reporting.  The danger of a fall or damage to your roof surface is a true concern.

Most air conditioners run on 240 volts with a 60 amp service.  Dealing with high voltage and high amperage is very dangerous and life threatening and not for anyone who isn’t fully trained for safe access.  We aren’t even going to open that door at all.  If you have any concerns about this call in a professional!

The refrigerant gas that your air conditioner uses is tightly regulated by several governmental agencies.  Recharging or replacing that gas needs special gauges, hoses and connections.  Dealing with the high pressure side can expose the user to situations that could lead to injury or precipitate a fall.

In some cases even with the power to the unit off a shock hazard can still exist.

Cleaning debris from the coils can seem straight forward, but water spray inside the cabinet can cause damage when you’re A/C unit is restarted.

If you feel that we are saying that DIY repair on your AC Unit is not something we recommend then this article has done its job.  We want our customers and friends to be safe and healthy.

We are never the one making claims about cheap prices (which usually means low quality work) but fast and fair prices… yes, that is a good description of Aaron’s Mechanical Service.  Give us a call to get started solving your AC headaches. That’s 623-388-4436, Thanks

Cool Arizona Places: Rawhide

History has never recorded a social phenomenon quite like the mass migration that filled the American West with cities, towns and hamlets. And the excitement of that dramatic time in history continues to live on right here in Rawhide. In our town, the west is still wild.

The western frontier town of Rawhide is situated in the Gila River Indian Community. The history of this vast, majestic area of the Sonoran Desert and its people dates back to ancient times when the Huhukam civilization was thriving here along side the Gila River.

Later, descendants of the Huhukam, the Pimas as they were called by the Spanish Explorers, designed an elaborate agricultural system throughout their many villages by diverting the waters of the Gila into canals that extended for miles into fields of crops. In their own language they were the Akimel O'othom, or River People. The O'othom were a peaceful group and eventually welcomed the Pee Posh, also known as the Maricopa, as they arrived to the valley seeking refuge from internal warfare. The Pee Posh migrated to the west end of the Gila River after agreeing to three items. One, they would fight the same wars with the Pimas against the Apaches, two, they would follow the leadership of the Pima Chiefs and three, they would agree to live in peace; the two have coexisted in this area ever since.

Together, the tradesmen embarked on laying out the broad main street and construction soon began. One by one, the proud false-fronted structures of the town began to rise from the desert floor and achieve their own identities; some built with adobe bricks, made from mud and straw, while other more grandiose structures were erected of sawn lumber brought down from the White Mountain's Mogollon Rim using large teams of mules. Pound for pound, these were the hardest working and smartest animals to be used on the western frontier.

The first building raised against the infinite desert skyline was the General Store. Owned and operated by Rawley, the store would eventually have available anything needed or craved by a frontier family, from sugar and salt to molasses and meat; even gunpowder and ammunition could be purchased there. During construction of the General Store, another building was taking shape across the street as John Slade, a newcomer to the area was busy putting up the first saloon in town appropriately named, The Number 1.

Gradually, Rawhide began to attract a diverse array of skills and talents that ultimately developed the town. Irvin Mace, a potato farmer and blacksmith out of Idaho arrived and was immediately inundated with business building hardware, as well as keeping local working livestock properly trimmed and fitted with shoes. Mace had brought much of his shop with him and re-built it nearly overnight in order to begin accommodating orders.

Homesteaders continued to pour into the area, as did many professional gamblers and entertainers looking to turn a profit. For as hard as life was on the frontier, Saturday nights were the high point of the week with live entertainment, endless gossip, social dancing and of course gambling. The billiard hall and saloon would be packed with patrons wagering on games of snooker, pinochle, poker, faro and keno. Inevitably, Rawhide would also see its share of desperados, shysters and scalawags; staying just long enough to cause uneasiness among the reputable population, get run out of town or wind up in jail. On the other hand some well-known names have also made appearances here such as Doc Holiday, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Billy the "Kid" and Annie Oakley.

A favored performer of early Rawhide's townsmen was Ms. Belle Garrettson, a song and dance entertainer who had brought her talents west all the way from Chicago, where she had served an apprenticeship at a "hurdy gurdy" house. It was said that her performance on stage along with her beauty was so hypnotizing that men literally fell out of their seats.

What Does It Mean to Be Comfortable?

Here in the Phoenix Metro area we can all agree that for six months every year we need air conditioning to be comfortable here.  So no matter what temperature you prefer to be comfortable Aaron’s Mechanical Service will help you get there.

Historically societies developed methods of dealing with their local climates, and those tools and behaviors became ingrained cultural customs. As the world becomes more interconnected, these customs are changing, and so is the definition of something as elemental as comfort.

That’s right: there is no universal definition of comfort, especially as it relates to temperature. Both Shove and Susan Mazur-Stommen, of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy research data clearly demonstrate that different people experience the same temperature differently. People report being comfortable all over the thermostat, from 43 degrees Fahrenheit all the way up to 86.

“What people count as comfortable is what they get used to,” Shove says, and this becomes obvious when you examine different societies side by side. In 1996, Harold Wilhite, director at the University of Oslo’s Center for Development and Environment, published a paper comparing energy-use cultural norms in Oslo, Norway, and Fukuoka, Japan. The two cities are similar in population size, level of industrial development, spending power and average home size. But southern Japan is warmer than southern Norway, and Japanese culture is very different from Norwegian culture.

Half the households Wilhite sampled didn’t turn the thermostat down before bed. Nearly 30 percent kept it turned up even when they weren’t home. In Fukuoka, where winters are comparatively mild, there wasn’t a cultural objection to entering cold rooms. In fact, homes in southern Japan usually didn’t have central heating at all. On chilly nights, families gathered on heated rugs, or around a kotatsu — a table with a built-in heat element.

Although many of Wilhite’s Japanese subjects believed A.C. units to be unhealthful and unpleasant, they were starting to expect their presence in any prosperous, modern home — a byproduct of globalization, according to Shove and other researchers.

Along with air-conditioning, globalization has also helped popularize something called Ashrae 55: a building code created by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, to determine the ideal temperature for large buildings. The standard, which has set thermostats across the globe, is hardly culture-free. It’s based on Fanger’s Comfort Equation, a mathematical model developed in Denmark and the United States in the 1960s and ’70s, which seeks to make a very specific worker comfortable: a man wearing a full business suit.

Should I Get An Air Conditioning Tune-Up Every Year?

In short, the answer to this question is yes. Your air conditioner sits unused over the winter. This can lead to dust buildup and a loss of charge, among other problems, which causes inefficient cooling and potential future repairs.

And it’s not just us. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR, and local utilities all recommend this yearly tune-up because it offers many benefits, several of which are listed below.

Reduce Energy Costs
Even while hibernating over the winter, your air conditioning coils are collecting dirt, dust and other debris. This buildup of debris contributes to your cooling system running less efficiently. Also, your air conditioner may have lost some of its charge over the winter. A tune-up will clean your coils and charge your air conditioner.

Avoid Costly Repairs
Not only do the problems listed above cause your air conditioner to run less efficiently, but they can also lead to future repairs. Just as an oil change and engine tune-up keeps your vehicle running, an air conditioning tune-up gives you peace of mind knowing everything is operating correctly. If there is a small problem, catching it now is much more affordable than finding out later when it has already caused damage to other critical components.

Increase System Lifespan
Any mechanic will tell you, driving your vehicle without ever having maintenance performed will shorten your engine’s lifespan. In the same way, using your air conditioner year in and year out without maintaining it will lead to problems and cause it to die prematurely.

Maintain Manufacturer’s Warranty
Did you know that most manufacturer’s warranties require that regular maintenance is performed on your system by a licensed professional? If you fail to follow this stipulation and your air conditioner needs to be repaired, you could be left footing the bill. An air conditioning tune-up can help maintain that manufacturer’s warranty and save you money.

In the Phoenix Metro area you likely rely heavily on your air conditioner to keep you cool and comfortable. An annual air conditioning tune-up saves you money and helps ensure your air conditioner functions correctly all year long.  Aaron’s Mechanical Service has been proudly providing unmatched residential and commercial air conditioning service to Phoenix area since 1994.
