Cool Arizona Places: Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon on the Colorado River, on the border between Arizona and Nevada. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. The dam was controversially named after President Herbert Hoover.

Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium called Six Companies, Inc., which began construction on the dam in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The torrid summer weather and the lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned over the dam to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule.

The Wattis Brothers, heads of the Utah Construction Company, were interested in bidding on the project, but lacked the money for the performance bond. They lacked sufficient resources even in combination with their longtime partners, Morrison-Knudsen, which employed the nation's leading dam builder, Frank Crowe. They formed a joint venture to bid for the project with Pacific Bridge Company of Portland, Oregon; Henry J. Kaiser & W. A. Bechtel Company of San Francisco; MacDonald & Kahn Ltd. of Los Angeles; and the J.F. Shea Company of Portland, Oregon. The joint venture was called Six Companies, Inc. Bechtel and Kaiser were considered one company for purposes of the name. The name was descriptive and was an inside joke among the San Franciscans in the bid "Six Companies" was a Chinese benevolent association in the city. There were three valid bids, and Six Companies' bid of $48,890,955 was the lowest, within $24,000 of the confidential government estimate of what the dam would cost to build, and five million dollars less than the next lowest bid.

Hoover Dam forms Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by volume. The dam is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 25 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada.

The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction; nearly a million people tour the dam each year. Heavily traveled U.S. 93 ran along the dam's crest until October 2010, when the Hoover Dam bypass bridge opened.

Cooking Outdoors or In Microwave Keeps You Cooler

During the summer you can save money on your AC costs just by cooking smart.

Use your microwave oven, countertop appliances or outdoor grill for cooking instead of the oven or stove.  Stay cooler for less by not heating the kitchen when it is 110 plus outside.

All three of those options will save money in two ways.  You don’t use as much electrical energy and you don’t heat up your house as much with your microwave oven, countertop appliances or outdoor grill.  That heat you DON’T have to remove from your house means you Air Conditioner doesn’t have to run as long and that can be a big $avings.

What says summer better than burgers and hot dogs? Instead of using your oven or stove, which can generate heat on an already hot day, fire up the outdoor grill for cooking. You can also use your microwave or other countertop appliances in place of the stove or oven.

Most microwaves will cook a standard hotdog in 25 seconds, and a bun length hotdog in 30 seconds.
If you cook a hot dog in a microwave too long you get a hot dog that split or burst and that is not a good looking hot dog.  They say we eat first with our eyes.

That shorter cooking time is a large savings over the five minute (after the water reaches a boil) cooking by boiling hotdogs on a typical kitchen stove.  The waste heat from the boiling water and electrical element is even more heat your AC needs to remove.

Many people are sure that their hot dogs and hamburgers that are cooked on an outdoor grill just plain taste better than any cooking you can do on any stove.  Better taste and no heating of your indoor space.

If you question the cost of running a propane grill versus your stove cook top you are correct that there is a difference.  Cooking a group burgers on the grill should cost about 0.45 cents and cooking the same on an electric stove would be around 0.20 cents.  You still have to figure in the cost of the additional work your AC unit needs to do in order to cool your house back down.

Taste vs costs, the call is up to you.  Speaking of calls if you have an AC problem you should be calling Aaron’s Mechanical Service a call at 623-388-4436.

A Real Hot Ending To June

Have you seen the weather forecast for this coming weekend?  I looks like June 2013 is going to come to an end with our daytime temperatures at least eight to ten degrees above normal.  With our “normal” daytime temps running in the 106 to 108 degree range that means that we will see the afternoons running 114 to 116 degrees.  I don’t know about you but that is HOT!

That is not the time to have your AC Unit go out.  Are you and your air conditioner ready?  If you want to live dangerously that is OK but keep Aaron’s Mechanical Service’s phone number handy, that’s  623-388-4436.

The last thing you want to do this weekend is to have to pack up you, the family and the pets and move to your aunt Sally’s house or worse yet to the local $100 dollar a night motel.  You have to hope they are pet friendly and the security deposits for pets is under $50 dollars each.

Did we mention that Aaron’s Mechanical Service AC inspections and Tune-ups?  You have heard the old saying from Ben Franklin that “an ounce of prevention is worth a whole pound of cure!”  That is great advice when it comes to keeping your air conditioning running at its most efficient and least expensive form.

Did you know; that a large healthy shade tree near the southwest corner of your home can keep your house up to ten degrees cooler during the afternoon?

Did you know; that the temperatures you hear broadcast by the media are taken in the shade.  The temperature is taken in the shade and in the open, because scientists need the air temperature.
When sun shines on the thermometer, the infrared radiation, artificially raises the surface temperature of whatever it shines on ( the thermometer in this case ) and this gives false reading. Measuring the temperature is not solely to tell people, how hot they feel under blazing sun on their skin.

Did you know; you need to drink at least one half gallon of water a day to stay hydrated.  If you are working outdoors you can loose even more than that amount.

Is your neighbor’s window open and it’s 115 degrees outside? This is a sure sign that there may be a problem with the air-conditioning. On those excessive-heat-warning days, check on neighbors who tend to stay inside or those who may be on fixed incomes and might skimp on air-conditioning.

Cool Arizona Places: Slide Rock State Park

Slide Rock State Park, originally the Pendley Homestead, is a 43-acre historic apple farm located in Oak Creek Canyon. Frank L. Pendley, having arrived in the canyon in 1907, formally acquired the land under the Homestead Act in 1910. Due to his pioneering innovation, he succeeded where others failed by establishing a unique irrigation system still in use by the park today. This allowed Pendley to plant his first apple orchard in 1912, beginning the pattern of agricultural development that has dominated the site since that time. Pendley also grew garden produce and kept some livestock.

As one of the few homesteads left intact in the canyon today, Slide Rock State Park is a fine example of early agricultural development in Central Arizona. The site was also instrumental to the development of the tourism industry in Oak Creek Canyon. The completion of the canyon road in 1914 and the paving of the roadway in 1938 were strong influences in encouraging recreational use of the canyon. Hence, Pendley followed suit and in 1933, built rustic cabins to cater to vacationers and sightseers.

The park is named after the famous Slide Rock, a stretch of slippery creek bottom adjacent to the homestead. Visitors may slide down a slick natural water chute or wade and sun along the creek. The swim area is located on National Forest land which is jointly managed by Arizona State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service. Together these areas have seen the making of many Hollywood movies such as "Broken Arrow" (1950) with James Stewart, "Drum Beat" (1954) with Alan Ladd and Charles Bronson, "Gun Fury" (1953) with Rock Hudson and Donna Reed, and a scene from "Angel and the Badman" (1946) with John Wayne.

On July 10, 1985, Arizona State Parks purchased the park property from the Arizona Parklands Foundation. The park was dedicated in October 1987, and accepted onto the National Register of Historic Places on December 23, 1991.

Staying Cool For Less Money This Summer

Lets get this out of the way right up front.  In the Phoenix Metro area you need Air Conditioning to stay cool in our summer heat.  To save money that means having you’re your AC Unit running as efficiently as possible.  To accomplish that you need to have good solid maintenance done on a regular basis.  Have you called and scheduled an AC Tune-up yet?

Some folks tell you that you need to turn up your thermostat so you AC runs less.  Yes, that will save energy and money.  But, if you take that to extremes you will save money but you won’t stay cool.  If you turn your thermostat to 84 degrees you will save money but you won’t be staying cool.

When you think about cooling your home, do your thoughts turn to money and engery efficiency? The more efficient your cooling systems is, the less it cost to run. That means your utility bills can be lower. Energy efficiency is good for the environment, too.

Before you invest in a new system, ask about the EnergyGuide label — it lets you know how energy efficient a model is compared to others like it. Products that meet certain energy efficiency criteria will have the ENERGY STAR logo. If you want to increase the efficiency of your system but you're not in the market to replace it, consider a professional or do-it-yourself home energy assessment. It can show you how specific fixes — like sealing air leaks or beefing up insulation — could help you save money and boost efficiency.

More than half of the energy use in a typical home goes toward heating and cooling it, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). There's plenty to consider when you look at new heating and cooling systems: the latest options, the cost to buy them, how much energy they use, and the cost to operate them.

By choosing the most energy-efficient equipment that meets your needs, you may be able to spend less money to heat and cool your home. And it's good for the environment, too; energy efficiency can reduce air pollution and help conserve natural resources.

If you need to replace your AC Unit look into special energy efficiency offers. Ask your local utility or system salesperson about cash rebates, low-interest loans, tax breaks, or other incentives for buying energy-efficient products, and how you can qualify. You can learn about tax credits and incentives at http://energy.gov/savings.

If you are looking for a great place to get help with your cooling needs this summer? Give Aaron’s Mechanical Service a call at 623-388-4436.

You Do Know About Murphy’s Law, Right?

Murphy's law - "Everything that can possibly go wrong will go wrong."

Murphy's law's corollary - "If there is a worse time for something to go wrong, it will happen then."

This time of year you can be reminded of Murphy’s law at any time of the day.  It is that moment when you realize the heat and the quiet all at the same time.  Your Air Conditioning should be running and it isn’t!

Your AC Unit will never pick a good time to fail, no, not ever.  It will be the hottest day and the worse time. At least that is the way it seems.  A good AC Tune Up can help prevent or at least delay a visit from Murphy.

When I listened to the weather forecast this morning it was “Hot & Dry” for the next seven days.  With the average day-time high running 106 degrees to 109 degrees.  If that isn’t a good start for Murphy’s Law then I don’t know what is.

A hot day and a quiet Air Conditioner is not what you want to experience this summer.  At Aaron’s Mechanical Service we want to prevent a visit from Murphy.

One story of how Murphy’s Law got its name.  Edward A. Murphy, Jr. was one of the engineers on the rocket-sled experiments that were done by the U.S. Air Force in 1949 to test human acceleration tolerances (USAF project MX981). One experiment involved a set of 16 accelerometers mounted to different parts of the subject's body. There were two ways each sensor could be glued to its mount, and somebody methodically installed all 16 the wrong way around. Murphy then made the original form of his pronouncement, which the test subject (Major John Paul Stapp) quoted at a news conference a few days later.

Remember, If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

The cost of an AC Tune-up and a night at a motel are similar, where do you want to spend your money?

At Aaron’s Mechanical Service we want you to stay cool even in the hottest parts of an Arizona summer.  If your AC unit needs service or replacement please think of us and call at 623 -388-4436 and we can come to you and solve your air conditioning repair needs.

120 Days Until Arizona Cools Off

I guess it could be good or bad news depending on how you look at it.  It is about 4 months or 120 days until mid October.  Mid October is when southwest Arizona begins to drop out of the nineties when it comes to daytime high temperatures.

If you are cool and comfortable at home 120 days of 100 plus heat isn’t really bad news.  But, if you Air Conditioner isn’t keeping you cool and comfortable, or even worse yet driving you toward the poor house then you need to call Aaron’s Mechanical Service at 623 -388-4436 and get your AC Unit under control.

Suffering through an Arizona summer can be very hard to deal with.  Some people work very hard through an Arizona summer.  They work outdoors and have to put up with that heat.  When they come home they deserve a cool and comfortable retreat.  If you heed help making your home a comfortable oasis call us at Aaron’s Mechanical Service.

Right now somebody out there is realizing that their AC isn’t running and should be.  You have an Air Conditioner emergency.  We are just a phone call away… call Aaron’s Mechanical Service at 623 -388-4436.  We will be there… consider us Fast, Fair and Friendly.  We work very hard at keeping our service calls just that.  Your friend in the AC service business.

Here are a few ideas to help you through the next 120 days.

1. Do what ever you can after the sun goes down
2. Spend time in a pool, yours, the neighbors or a public one
3. Cook outdoors rather than indoors.
4. Always stay hydrated… that means water. No other liquid works as well
5. Dress in loose fitting cotton clothes
6. Be 10 to 20 degrees cooler… Visit the Northern side of the state and cool off at high elevations
7. Eat spicy food. As if you're not sweating enough, right? Well, in this case, the extra perspiration will help in telling your body just how hot you are. That will enable the sweat pores to open up a bit more, allowing a natural cooling effect. It doesn't mean your best bet is an all-you-can-eat Buffalo wing joint, but a little Mexican or Indian food might indeed do the trick.

At Aaron’s Mechanical Service we want you to stay cool and comfortable all year round.  If your AC unit needs service or replacement please think of us and call at 623-388-4436 and we can come to you and solve your air conditioning repair needs.

Cool Arizona Places: London Bridge, Lake Havasu

If the Grand Canyon is the granddaddy of Arizona attractions, London Bridge is the prince. The span, which traces its royal roots to 1831 England, was purchased in 1971 for $2.4 million, but it cost more than $4 million to ship. A look at this big, blocky bridge is unaffected, but when you walk across, you have to wonder in whose footsteps you're following — Charles Dickens? Jack the Ripper? Queen Victoria?

History

In 1967, the Common Council of the City of London placed the bridge on the market and began to look for potential buyers. Council member Ivan Luckin had put forward the idea of selling the bridge, and recalled: "They all thought I was completely crazy when I suggested we should sell London Bridge when it needed replacing." On 18 April 1968, Rennie's bridge was sold to an American. It was purchased by the Missourian entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch of McCulloch Oil for US$2,460,000.

The claim that McCulloch believed mistakenly that he was buying the more impressive Tower Bridge was denied by Luckin in a newspaper interview.

As the bridge was taken apart, each piece was meticulously numbered. The blocks were then shipped overseas through the Panama Canal to California and trucked from Long Beach to Arizona.

The bridge was reconstructed by Sundt Construction at Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and re-dedicated on October 10th 1971. The reconstruction of Rennie's London Bridge spans the Bridgewater Channel canal that leads from the Uptown area of Lake Havasu City and follows McCulloch Boulevard onto an Island that has yet to be named.

The London Bridge that was rebuilt at Lake Havasu City consists of a frame with stones from Rennie's London Bridge used as cladding. The cladding stones used are 6 to 8 inches thick. Some of the stones from the bridge were left behind at Merrivale Quarry at Princetown in Devon. When Merrivale Quarry was abandoned and flooded in 2003, some of the remaining stones were sold in an online auction.

Too Hot To…

Summer in Arizona.  Ok, Ok … it still is two weeks until it is officially summer, but with temperatures over 110 degrees Fahrenheit already it sure feels like summer to me.

Now that you have had several days of “Hot” how comfortable is your home?  Is your Air Conditioner running full time to keep your home or business where you are comfortable?

Many times you have rooms in your home that are Too Hot… Many times people find that when working or cooking in the kitchen during the summer it is a room that is just too hot.  You need to make sure your AC Unit is working properly and the ac vents are properly balanced.  Also try to cook or bake during cooler times of the day.  Morning or late evening can be good times to do your hotter jobs.

Consider using a crock pot which will add far less heat to the room rather than the store or oven.  Keep you refrigerator door closed as much as possible.

Barbecuing or grilling in the outdoors adds fun to any meal and keeps your kitchen cool during hot weather. Anything you can cook in your kitchen can be adapted to be cooked on an outdoor grill.

Consider the benefits of changing your kitchen ceiling light to a ceiling fan with lighting fixture, to improve air circulation and provide a cooling breeze in your cooking area. Keep the cook cool and happy during meal preparation.

Make lots of salads, cold soups, and other fresh, raw dishes. Enjoy the local bounty from your garden or local farmer's market and save both cooking and transportation energy.

Heat or cook things in the microwave whenever possible, rather than on the stovetop or in the oven. It’s energy-efficient and heats only the food, not the air or a lot of extra water.

Cool foods or leftovers at room temperature for up to an hour before putting them in the refrigerator to reduce the amount of work your appliance has to do. Not only does cooling hot food require more energy, but your fridge also generates heat that is released into the house while doing so.

Keeping Babies Safe In Arizona Summer Heat

With the Television stations and the weather services telling us that this weekend will see temperatures in the Arizona desert going to be from 110 to 114 degrees you may wonder how you can keep your new baby safe and comfortable.

Whether you spend it inside or in the great outdoors, summer is a tricky season for keeping an infant safe and comfortable. Overdress a baby and he could develop an angry heat rash; expose his fragile body to hot conditions and he could be vulnerable to a painful, damaging sunburn or to heatstroke, a serious affliction characterized by a high fever and rapid breathing. Overheating has also been linked to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), a fatal sleeping disorder. Babies sleep deeply when they're hot, making them difficult to arouse, which may increase the risk of SIDS.

Since a baby doesn't perspire effectively, he can become overheated far more quickly than an adult. That's why you should never leave an infant in a hot room or a parked car. Even a few minutes could cause his temperature to spike and, in extreme cases, may prove life-threatening.

Make sure you can keep your home comfortable for you new baby as well as the rest of the family.  Putting you baby down for a nap is best done in a well ventilated room that is at a comfortable temperature range.

Even if you don't see beads of sweat dripping from your infant's forehead, he can be losing precious fluids to perspiration in hot weather. A flushed face, skin that's warm to the touch, rapid breathing, and restlessness may be warning signs of dehydration. Since infants under 6 months shouldn't drink water (babies over 6 months can take in modest amounts), replace the lost liquids by giving him extra formula or by nursing more frequently. Babies should drink at least 50 percent more than usual in the summer (normal fluid intake is at least two ounces per pound per day), so a ten-pound baby who usually takes in 20 ounces should be offered a minimum of 30 ounces.

If an infant sweats profusely during hot, humid weather, tiny red bumps may start to cluster on her neck or groin, in the folds of her skin at the back of her knees, or in the crease of her elbows. To relieve heat rash, remove her sticky outfit and dress her in loose cotton clothes (or simply a diaper), and apply cornstarch baby powder to the affected areas. Keeping her in a cool, well-ventilated room will help relieve symptoms.

Learn to be Heat Smart with your new born in our challenging Arizona summers.

Arizona Places: Ranch at Fossil Creek

The Ranch at Fossil Creek is located in the beautiful mountain setting of Strawberry, Arizona. We are a working ranch and raise llamas and dairy goats.

This is also the home of Fossil Creek Creamery, where they make and sell delicious and healthy artisan goat's milk cheeses and fudge.

Llamas are fuzzy and friendly — kind of like a hug with legs. They're also excellent pack animals, which is why Fossil Creek Llama Ranch offers guided hikes with the South American camelids. During the half-day treks, you'll travel along the Mogollon Rim, exploring Fossil Creek, a stunning natural travertine spring, as well as Indian ruins and the perimeter of Tonto National Forest. The llamas do all of the heavy lifting, so you can just kick back in your boots and enjoy the scenery.

Be the first in your crowd to spend a night sleeping in a yurt. You'll spend the night in your own sleeping bag in the yurt and then rise the next day for a breath-taking hike through the Arizona mountains with the llamas trekking alongside. It's an unforgettable experience!

The Ranch at Fossil Creek covers approximately 15 acres, located adjacent to the Coconino National Forest and overlooking the Ponderosa Pines of the Tonto National Forest.

Owners John and Joyce Bittner have been raising dairy goats and llamas here for several years, and in 2007, the new Fossil Creek Creamery was certified by the state of Arizona.

Explore their website for more information and specific details. They strive to make your visit both fun and educational, and love sharing information and the fun of their four-footed friends and cool Arizona lifestyle.

Location: 10379 W. Fossil Creek Road Strawberry, AZ 85544 - 928-476-5178

Hours:  April through September - 10:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m

Are You Ready For A New Air Conditioner?

When it comes to the decision to repair or replace an air conditioner how do decide to repair or replace?

Several factors are needed to understand the right side of the question – repair or replace your current air conditioner.

How long do you plan on living in that residence?

How old is your AC Unit?

How Efficient is Your Current Unit (SEER Rating)?

How Much will the Current Repair Cost?

How Many Repairs have you had recently?

The most obvious sign is the need for constant air conditioner repairs – especially if those repairs get progressively more expensive. Let’s face it – if your air conditioner breaks down more than once in a summer, you can patch it up but it won’t be long before you need to replace it. If your need for air conditioner repair gets really bad, air conditioner replacement can actually save you some money by eliminating the need for costly repairs.

If you’re still on the fence about getting air conditioner replacement, think about this: how much time would it take before a new air conditioner pays for itself in terms of energy and repair cost savings? To figure this out, first determine the amount of energy you could save with a new air conditioner.

When you buy a new air conditioner, there are three things to remember. Don't buy an oversized unit. Buy an efficient model. And make sure that the unit you buy is installed properly.

If you live in the Phoenix Metro area and have an old air conditioner that needs frequent repairs or doesn’t cool your house properly, call Aaron’s Mechanical Service. We will come out and inspect your air conditioner and determine how much money you would save if you had air conditioner replacement.

Weather Dangers You Can Avoid

With the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma and the other states in the Midwest and the intense media coverage you are well aware of the dangers related to these storms.  We have just entered into the 2013 hurricane seasons as well.

Many folks come away from these stories thinking the high winds of the tornadoes are the only dangers that are weather related causes of death.

Did you know that heat related deaths are the most common cause of weather related deaths.  More people die each year in the United States from heat related causes than anything else.  These types deaths rarely get the coverage that floods or wind damage deaths receive.

With the temperatures in the Phoenix area pushing 110 degrees Fahrenheit plus already you need to be aware of the local dos and don’ts and heat stress related signs.

Factors Leading to Heat Stress
High temperature; direct sun or heat; limited air movement; physical exertion; poor physical condition; some medicines; and inadequate tolerance for hot indoor spaces.
