Cool Arizona Places: Out of Africa Wildlife Park

Just outside of Camp Verde is the Out of Africa Wildlife Park it features many local and worldwide animals. Sort of a lions, tigers and bears oh my and many more.

Here is a story of just one of their animals.  To see more and get further information click on the website link at the bottom of this post.

Sycamore the Grizzly Bear

Sycamore’s arrival brought tears of joy to park staff and visitors alike. After all, how many of us have actually seen a thirty-one pound baby grizzly? Along with his off-the-chart mega-cuteness factor, we quickly discovered that Sycamore’s energy is endless, and that means playtime is ALL the time. Sycamore was born in a zoo in Ohio. Now that he lives at his permanent home at Out of Africa Wildlife Park, he will slowly begin to match the size and weight of his 800-pound father.

Sycamore’s parents are from a captive line of former circus bears. Sycamore was not needed as a circus bear, so he was offered to Out of Africa. We had been looking for a young male grizzly for about two years, ever since Cypress, a female grizzly, had lost her sister Aspen. Both Cypress and Aspen were rescued several years earlier, but Aspen passed away due to a fungal disease known as Valley Fever, leaving Cypress without companionship.

When Sycamore joined us, our first objective was to make him comfortable as he acclimated to his new habitat. His temporary home is located next to two rescued black bears named Parker and Sierra, brought to us by the Department of Arizona Game and Fish.

The permanent plan will be to introduce Sycamore and Cypress to each other in 2015, once Cypress has woken up from her semi-hibernation. Sycamore has grown to a more substantial size since he first arrived, and this will bode well for him as he learns to handle the “bearish” tendencies of larger Cypress. Meanwhile, we hope Sycamore will be accepted by the two black bears Parker and Sierra. So far, all is well. And Sycamore’s playful antics, never-ending energy, and adorable nature are still very much the norm.

Habitat:
The grizzly bear is known by many names: the silvertip bear, the grizzly, or the North American brown bear. It is a subspecies of the brown bear that generally lives in the uplands of Western North America. The species is found in Alaska, south through much of Western Canada, and into portions of the Northwestern United States including Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Wyoming, extending as far south as Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, but is most commonly found in Canada.

Behavior:
These giants tend to be solitary animals, with the exception of females and their cubs, but at times they do congregate. Dramatic gatherings of grizzly bears can be seen at prime Alaskan fishing spots when the salmon run upstream for summer spawning. In this season, dozens of bears may gather to feast on the fish, craving fats that will sustain them through the long winter ahead. Despite their impressive size, grizzlies are quite fast and have been clocked at 30 miles an hour. They can be dangerous to humans, particularly if surprised or if humans come between a mother and her cubs.
