You Never Have To Shovel Sunshine

Here in the Phoenix Metro Area we have a say about never having to shovel sunshine and we love to share it with friends and family who still live in one of the Snow Belt states.

I don’t know about you but I get cold just reading about and watching the news coverage on the real nasty weather they continue to have in the northeast part of the country.

Returning from the big ball game of February 1st travelers are still snarled trying to get home through this latest storm.

Here is a headline that causes travels and commuters to have second thoughts about driving. Winter Storm Linus Brings Black Ice for Tuesday Commute in the Northeast. For all of you who have encountered black ice knows that instant feeling you get when your car seems to have a mind of its own and the steering wheel inputs don’t respond at all. That makes me feel cold just thinking about driving in that kind of weather.

Winter Storm Linus brought a swath of heavy snow across much of the Northeast Monday, disrupting the start of the workweek for millions of people. The storm also laid down a narrow zone of freezing rain across a heavily populated area near New York City into parts of southern New England.

Now, a flash freeze is starting to take its toll on Tuesday's commute. Severe delays were reported on several MBTA lines in the Boston area, and 10-20 minute delays were also reported on MTA trains from Long Island. Yes, news stories like this bring many snowbird visitors to the Valley of the Sun every year.

So what does that mean in terms of the actual storm totals… Snow officially began at Central Park in New York City at 8:47 p.m. EST Sunday. After snowing all night, precipitation mixed with and changed to rain for a few minutes just before 6 a.m. Monday, but quickly changed to freezing rain by 5:54 a.m. Freezing rain with occasional sleet continued the rest of the morning, but Central Park changed back to light snow at 1:41 p.m. Monday.

Snow overspread much of the rest of New York state and New England, and up to 24 inches of snow had already piled up in Massachusetts by evening Monday.

Boston reported 16.2 inches of snow Monday, bringing its total to 40.5 inches over the past seven days. That's the snowiest one-week period in Boston since modern weather records began in 1891.

I know they think we are very strange when we talk about running our heating system or furnace when the outside air temperature gets below fifty (OK, even 60) degrees Fahrenheit. We tend to remind them that we need to be ready for temperatures that run over one-hundred ten degrees during the summer.

We just have to agree that we, in the desert southwest, just have a very different idea of what the term “warm” means.
