Is Your A/C System Ready For Remnant Storms From Hurricane Odile?

The National Weather Service warning about hurricane, Odile, that battered Mexico’s Baja coast, and its outer bands of rain is arriving in the Phoenix Metro Area, (perhaps the entire state of Arizona) as rain begins to fall Tuesday afternoon September 16th and is expected to last until Wednesday or even Thursday and perhaps into early Friday.

After reaching Category 4 strength Sunday, Odile was downgraded to Category 3. But it was still a major storm that brought high winds, storm surge, deadly surf, heavy rains, mudslides and much property destruction to Los Cabos and parts of the mainland, and forecasters said it could strengthen again as it moves north along the west coast.

Still, the weakened storm is expected to send more rain to the flood-prone southwest U.S. Flash watches were issued in parts of southern California, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas. Mexico is bracing for another tropical storm which is expected to become a hurricane by the time it hits the southwestern coast of the country later this week. Tropical Storm Polo is expected to stay south of Baja California peninsula, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Yes, the Valley of the Sun need the rainfall, but not so much all at one time.

Make sure you stay up-to-date with the local news and weather forecasts so your family can remain safe and protected. Storms don’t know they are supposed to do and what time frame the weather men are saying on television.

If you are traveling in the next few days pay special attention to your schedule to make sure flight cancellations and road closures won’t be changing your plans.

Mexican military and private aircraft began airlifting stranded tourists from popular resort area of Los Cabos Tuesday, after Hurricane Odile slammed the Baja California peninsula and ravaged the vacation destination, flooding homes, damaging mega-resort hotels and sending debris into an airport terminal.

The first flight left for Tijuana with 44 passengers aboard. The Mexican government on Monday said damage from the tropical storm that struck Sunday and Monday had stranded some 30,000 tourists, including 26,000 foreign visitors, in Los Cabos. Odile was downgraded to a tropical storm an is expected to be reduced to a tropical depression by Wednesday.

Did You Know?

You can’t turn off the electrical power to your air conditioner by just turning your thermostat from “Cool” to “Off”.

If your AC is a ground mounted unit make sure to shut off the power to it, if your yard begins to flood.  You would do that at your electrical panel where your breakers are located.  If your panel is inside that is ok, but, with older homes, if it is located on the outside, NEVER touch or open during a rainstorm.

If your Air Conditioner is on your roof it is generally safe from damage from flooding but wind and branches can wreak havoc on it.
