Category 1 Hurricane Strength Wind in Phoenix AZ Microburst

Near 53rd Avenue on Greenway Road
Did you read that the National Weather Service mentioned that the Microbursts that hit the Valley of the Sun may have contained wind speeds that were in the eighty mile per hour range?  You might find the following fact interesting. This will mean more to the folks whose streets and yards were filled with storm debris. So if you felt that this was a major wind event on 09/27/2014 you were correct.

The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane's sustained wind speed. This scale estimates potential property damage. Category 1 and 2 storms are still dangerous, however, and require preventative measures. In the western North Pacific, the term "super typhoon" is used for tropical cyclones with sustained winds exceeding 150 mph.

Category 1 wind speed rating is 74-95 mph. Very dangerous winds will produce some damage: Well-constructed frame homes could have damage to roof, shingles, vinyl siding, gutters and fences. Large branches of trees will snap and shallowly rooted trees may be toppled. Extensive damage to power lines and poles likely will result in power outages that could last a few to several days. Yep, that describes the damage that ran from just north of Thunderbird to near Bell Road and from about 55th Avenue to 67th Avenue.

Many folks suffered wind-blown debris damage to their air conditioners, HVACs and cooling systems as well.

Did You Know?

Is a tornado and a microburst related or even comparable?

The Fujita scale (F-Scale), or Fujita–Pearson scale, is a scale for rating tornado intensity, based primarily on the damage tornadoes inflict on human-built structures and vegetation.

F0 tornado = 40 - 72 mph Light damage. Some damage to chimneys; branches broken off trees; shallow-rooted trees pushed over; sign boards damaged.

F1 tornado = 73 - 112 Moderate damage. The lower limit is the beginning of hurricane wind speed; peels surface off roofs; mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned; moving autos pushed off the roads; attached garages may be destroyed.

While we didn’t have a tornado the microburst did damage that is comparable to what happens in an F0 or lower range F1 tornado.
