People Think A Beautiful Landscape Makes Them Feel Warm And Fuzzy

Normally on Mondays we talk about what the National Weather Service is forecasting for the Phoenix Metro area for the coming week.  We are having such a mild winter we decided to talk about your spring planting plans.  You may wonder why we are doing that on a site that is all about saving you money on the cost of heating and cooling your home.  Well, we want to keep you warm, cozy and comfortable why not talk a bit about a good looking landscape around your home.

As the Phoenix Metro area heads towards spring time we know that you have many other projects that need your attention when it comes to maintaining your home.

Did You Know?

There are two main growing seasons in Phoenix: from mid February until the end of May, and from September to mid November. As a result, nation-wide planting calendars are ill adapted to our needs.

January is only real winter month in Phoenix.
Here is what to do in January:
- Spray dormant shrubs.
- Last chance to plant bare roots trees and shrubs.
- Prune roses and deciduous fruit trees.
- Monitor freeze warnings
- Plant summer bulbs.

Normally frost is possible until mid-February. (on a very rare occasion a frost can occur as late as the middle of March) The growing season starts then in Phoenix. Since the growing season is so short, don't lose time. You need to give as much time as possible to plants and trees to grow before the punishing summer heat.
- Weed prevention with pre-emergence herbicide.
- Complete rose and deciduous tree pruning.
- Start spring planting.

After the 15th of February
- Start fertilizing: use a calendar to keep track of your fertilization schedule.
- You can start planting frost tender plants and shrub.
