Does Your Energy Bill Break Your Budget?

How do you budget for the price of heating and/or cooling your home? Many utility companies offer some type of budget billing so that your energy cost is a set amount each moth year round.  That way for the year you know in advance what you will be spending every month.

At the end of your budget cycle (usually every 12 months) and based on your last year’s costs the utility company will re-calculate your costs and give you the schedule for the coming years monthly billings.

In nearly all cases this is done with no interest fees or carry costs. Many companies will have set months when you can start into the budget billing programs.

You need to contact your utility company or use their website to find out exactly how the program (if any) works in your area and at your actual address.

Below is an example of budget billing with one particular utility company. Budget Billing spreads your annual charges more evenly over 12 months.

Some companies even offer different programs that may have several options.

Options
Both options estimate and spread your charges over 12 months, with a review every six months.

Periodic
If actual use is not in line with your budget amount after 6 months, an adjustment is made automatically in month 7.

Your account is reviewed at end of budget year, and a settlement balance is added or subtracted automatically in month 12.

Continuous
If actual use is not in line with your budget amount after 6 months, an adjustment is made automatically in month 7.

Your account is reviewed at end of month 12. Any settlement balance is included in the next year's monthly budget bill amount.

Of course another way to save on your utility bill is to have your Furnace, air conditioner or HVAC equipment serviced on a regular basis.  Well maintained units will cost less to operate.
