How to Use a Programmable Thermostat

If you get the chills every time you open your utility bill, your house may just be too cold. More likely, however, you are paying too much to heat your home. In any case, you can make changes that will make your home feel warmer and more comfortable and save you money at the same time.

Wouldn’t it be great if your thermostat took care of itself so you didn’t have to bother with it? Well, there exists such a wonderful thing! A programmable thermostat lets you tailor your heating and cooling to your schedule.

Are you out and about from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.? Let your programmable thermostat know and your heating or cooling could automatically be turned down or shut off- saving you money. The average home spends $2,200 a year on energy bills and heating and cooling make up more than half of that. A programmable thermostat could help you save $150 to $200 a year.

Once you have a Programmable Thermostat how do you set it?

For Heat
6 a.m. to 9 a.m. = 68 to 72 degrees
9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. = 55 to 60 degrees
5:30 to 11 p.m. = 68 to 72 degrees
11 p.m. to 6 a.m. = 55 to 60 degrees

Or you can buy a smart thermostat that learns your lifestyle and programs itself. Here is just one type.

The Nest Learning Thermostat makes saving energy simple with control over Wi-Fi from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac. Nest also remembers what temperatures you like and turns itself down when you’re away.

Auto-Schedule
Nest creates a personalized schedule based on the temperature changes you've made. All you have to do is get comfortable. It's so simple that 95% of Nests have schedules.

Auto-Away
Nest automatically turns itself to an energy-saving temperature when you're away, so you don't waste energy heating or cooling an empty house.

Remote Control
Connect your Nest thermostat to Wi-Fi, download the free Nest Mobile app, and change the temperature from anywhere.

Energy History and Energy Report
See when the heat or AC was on and what affected your energy use. Then check your monthly Energy Report to understand how your energy use changes month-to-month and how you can save more.
