Arizona Places: Arcosanti

Arcosanti is an urban laboratory focused on innovative design, community, and environmental accountability. Our goal is to actively pursue lean alternatives to urban sprawl based on Paolo Soleri's theory of compact city design, Arcology (architecture + ecology).

Built by over 7,000 volunteers since the commencement of the project in 1970, Arcosanti provides various mixed-use buildings and public spaces where people live, work, visit, and participate in educational and cultural programs.

In 1965, Paolo Soleri (1919 - April 9, 2013) and his late wife, Colly, incorporated the Cosanti Foundation, a not-for-profit educational organization devoted to the support of Soleri's noted architectural and urban planning research.

Today, the primary areas of the Foundation's work are:

Educating students, design professionals, urban planners, and the general public about Soleri's architectural concepts and philosophy.

Ensuring the continuing construction of Arcosanti, according to the Arcology concept. This has been the main ongoing project of the Cosanti Foundation since 1970.

Mission:

The Cosanti Foundation exists to promote the concept of Arcology developed by Paolo Soleri as an Urban Alternative, through educational programs, exhibits, and most importantly, through the construction of Arcosanti as an experiential example of the concept. We expect Cosanti Foundation will develop its urban laboratory prototype Arcosanti as a scalable demonstration of an alternative urban experience and will become a lean urban research and development center.

Values:

Essential to the Foundation's success in achieving its mission is to value creative resourcefulness in planning and execution of our lean alternative programs.

Hosting educational and cultural conferences, as well as performing arts events, on a regular basis.
