Cool Arizona Places: Visit Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley

This coming weekend would be a great time to get in some skiing before the big football game on February 1st. Just over two hours south of the Phoenix Metro area is Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley. Yes, you can go from our desert winter climate in the seventies and be skiing.

During World War II, a group of skiers made up of Lowell Thomas, a noted journalist and adventurer, a local forest ranger, and many Davis Monthan serviceman which included Thomas’ son, later a Governor of Alaska, and Art Devlin, a future Olympic ski jumper and Television commentator, formed the Sahuaro Ski Club.

The well-known cartoonist, Paul Webb, created a patch and membership certificates for the club showing a skier wrapped around a saguaro cactus. Thomas sent honorary memberships to dozens of friends, famous personalities around the world, making membership a tongue in cheek must. A ski gala was held that first year at the Arizona Inn with many of Thomas’ friends in attendance.

A Forest Service lease was obtained, an old model “A” with its tires removed propelled a rope tow and Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley had its beginning.

They have two places to eat the Grub Stake and the Iron Door Restaurant.

The Grub Stake is our patio cafe open on weekends during the ski season and select weekends throughout the summer. Serving up hamburgers, hot dogs and bowls of steaming hot chili The Grub Stake is the perfect spot to warm up and enjoy the views the ski area has to offer while sitting slope side.

The “Iron Door Restaurant” serves a wide variety of salads, sandwiches, homemade soups and featuring our famous chili and cornbread. Whether you decide on a hearty lunch or just a salad or slice of pie, you will be treated to the most pleasant surroundings in which to enjoy your purchase, indoors in front of our floor to ceiling stone fireplace or outdoors on the patio with the flowers, trees and humming birds.

Skiing features 21 runs and 3 lifts.  The longest run is 8,500 feet.
