Replace Old AC and Heating Unit With More Efficient HVAC System

Many people wonder if it makes sense to wait until their current air conditioner or heating unit to fail or replace it with a new very high efficiency HVAC just to begin saving on their energy costs right away.

If your unit is from the nineteen-eighties or nineties it will be only 70 to 80 percent efficient when compared to a new HVAC system. If you save 30 percent on a $390 a month (summer time) that will be in the one-hundred to one-hundred-fifty dollar range per month when you are using it as an air conditioner.

During our mild winters your savings will be less per month but they still will add up. If a new HVAC unit saves you $1,000 per year and the average cost is $4,000 then your payback period is four years.  The sooner you start, the sooner you can be saving real dollars.

So do you want to wait until your current older unit fails before you can start to save on your energy bills? If you look back four years from now and you are still waiting you have just paid the cost of a new unit to the utility company and they won’t even say thank you. In fact if past history is any guide they will have raised your cost.

If you older unit is not running at its peak you could be wasting as much as 50% when compared to a new high efficiency HVAC unit. That means you could be paying twice as much to SRP or APS every month when compared to a new cooling and heating system.

Does your home have a split heating and cooling system and you pay for both electricity and gas?

Invest in the best. This is a long-term decision; it's not an appliance like a microwave. By buying the highest efficiency rating possible now, you hedge your bets against the high energy prices that are bound to come later.

Make sure to size your new system correctly. It may sound like a good thing if an HVAC unit kicks on and cools down a house in five minutes. Not really so. If you put on a unit that's too big, it simply won’t work as efficiently as a correctly sized unit.

An HVAC system that is too small cannot deliver adequate heating or cooling in extreme weather. And a system that is too large will not only cost more, but provide poorer temperature and humidity control.

Always look for the ENERGY STAR Label.
