Cool Arizona Places: Think Halloween and the Prescott Area

We (the Valley of the Sun) are looking at the mid-nineties for the next four days and you may want to cool off this coming weekend and that should help get you into the Halloween spirit for the following weekend.

Just about an hour north of the Phoenix Metro area is the Prescott and Prescott Valley area and from attractions to haunted places there is plenty of places to visit and things to do.

Prescott has a noticeable number of Halloween events this year, indicating it has become a haven for things that go bump in the night. No surprise, considering its rich territorial past that remains alive in its historic structures. Who knows what inhabits these buildings?

There should be something for just about everyone in this list of activities, making it a spook-tacular three-day weekend.

Guided tours of spooky Prescott locales with A Haunting Experience (AHauntingExperienceTours.com) and Haunted Prescott Tours.

Blue Rose Theater presents Lonesome Valley Haunting every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in October from 6-10 p.m. Tickets $5. Walk the chilling journey (five scenes of fear) of Thomas Barlow Massicks, one of the Prescott Valley area's first settlers. The town of Massicks died along with him in 1898, after he suffered for nearly a year from an accidental gunshot, but the Barlow Massicks "mansion" remains near Fain Park.

Bradshaw Mountain High School's Interact Club is sponsoring the 2nd annual Zombie Run on Saturday, Oct. 26. This year will feature two runs, at 4 and 6 p.m., of the 1.5-mile loop at Mountain Valley Park in Prescott Valley.

Zombies and ghosts register to terrify runners. Runners try to avoid the ghouls. Entry fee is $10 for runners over 18 and $5 under 18. Zombies: $7.

Pumpkin carving contest, 50/50 drawing and a photo booth also are included in the event. All proceeds go to send members to Rotary's Youth Leadership Awards camp at Camp Pine Rock in Prescott.

Halloween Happening at 6 p.m. at the Highlands Center for Natural History, 1375 Walker Rd. next to Prescott. Halloween Trail featuring owls and bats, costume contest, pumpkin carving, campfire stories. Costs $2 for kids, $5 for adults. highlandscenter.org)

Friday Night Fright Fest at 7 p.m. at the Elks Opera House in downtown Prescott. Movie double feature with "House on Haunted Hill" and then "Night of the Living Dead."
