A/C When To Repair or When To Replace?

The question of when is the “correct” time to replace your air conditioning unit rather than repairing it is not one that comes with a simple answer.

The age of the AC unit is just one part of the question.  How long are you going to stay in your home.  Are you ready to move somewhere else?  Some air conditioner failures leave you no choice but to replace your unit.  When the repair costs are most of the way to the price of a new unit, the choice can be very simple.

If your existing air conditioner is more than 10 years old it is not as efficient as a new unit will be.  This comparison is expressed as the SEER rating.  Your old unit could be 12 SEER or lower and your new unit could be as high as 19 SEER.  In general the higher the SEER rating the more the unit will cost.  But, all new units should be 14 SEER and above.  The bottom line of the SEER rating is that the higher the SEER rating the lower the actual cost for running the unit.

Older units have only one type of cooling cycle.  That run at full power only.  New units can come with  dual stage cooling.  On a warm day they will save electricity and money by running with reduced power consumption.

Consider that putting on a brand new unit can also allow the purchase of a repair contract and warranty combination that will reduce or eliminate any maintenance or repair costs for the next five or ten years.

Another item to consider is that older units tend to be nosier than the newer one.  Light sleepers are often awakened by their old units coming on during the night.

If your summer electric bills are high, or getting higher, it’s likely due to your old air conditioner running inefficiently.  If repairs are becoming common, your old A/C may be on its last legs, and the repair bills can quickly add up to the cost of a new system. On the other hand, if you have kept the A/C regularly maintained each year, you can probably trust it to last longer.

Do you or a family member have a health issue that is affected by high temperatures?  If so you want to make sure that your air conditioner needs to be as reliable as possible.  A replacement unit will tend to help with the up-time ratio.
