Can I say it one more time? I am so glad I live in the Phoenix Metro area. While Barrow Alaska will be a cold twenty degrees Fahrenheit today, Chicago will be even colder at just one degree BELOW zero.
Yesterday evening and overnight your furnace or heating system may have run a couple of hours total to keep your house warm and cozy there are places in the Midwest where the furnaces is running constantly and not really able to keep the house warm at all.
Have you heard or read about propane shortage that is affecting some parts of the U.S.?
America’s chronic cold is creating a significant propane shortage across the Midwest — leading Wisconsin to become the latest state to declare an energy emergency in advance of more arctic air blasting eastward this week.
Freezing temperatures, snowfall and delayed flights are just some of what an arctic air mass has brought the country. Some 14 million Americans who rely on propane have been shelling out more and more to heat their homes while the strong demand has outpaced the already-low inventories, energy officials say.
Twenty-four states, including Ohio, Illinois and Alabama, have already declared energy emergencies — which helps to loosen transportation rules so that out-of-state truckers can drive longer hours to make needed propane deliveries.
In Wisconsin, wholesale propane cost an average of $2.26 per gallon on Jan. 20, up 35 percent since mid-December. Wisconsin residential prices averaged $2.30 per gallon on Jan. 20, up 13 percent from a month earlier. That means a person with a 500-gallon propane tank is suddenly paying $135 more to fill it than he or she did in December. If you do the math that also means that the price to fully fill their 500 gallon propane tank is over $1,200 dollars.
Just to give you an idea how far south the deep freeze is moving, this morning the National Weather Service listed places as far south as Kentucky that will be below freezing (with wind chill) for the high temperature on Monday the 27th.
