Today is one of the coldest yet this year, with temperatures dipping to near freezing in most of the Phoenix Metro area. Was your home warm and cozy when you woke this morning?
What’s the best type of heating system for you? Well, in the Phoenix area we don’t use very much heat. Our energy expenditures usually break down to about 25% heating, 75% cooling. Our temperatures do not get nearly as cold as they do in other regions.
There’s the heat pump system, which is a reverse flow air conditioning unit. Next, there are gas furnaces. Third, and this is something you tend not to see a lot of anymore, there are heaters with an internal electrical strip. These have pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur as we’ve found more energy efficient heating alternatives.
In most cases, the heat pump system serves Phoenix residents best. It’s a matter of preference, what a customer is used to, because the gas furnace will typically pump out of the registers about 130 degrees or better of heat, while the heat pump will pump out about 105 degrees of heat. So, depending on how hot is too hot, that will help you make a decision right there. That said, the gas furnace does not blow as hard. So, a gas furnace just doesn’t cover as much square footage as effectively as a heat pump. That means that, in spite of lower temperature output, the heat pump actually makes up for it by producing more air flow than a gas furnace.
Another consideration really depends on the outdoor temperature. If it’s really, really cold, obviously a gas furnace would produce more heat. Plus, some older heat pump units can go into defrost mode on a super cold day, but it’s very seldom that that happens. The heat pump units have become more and more efficient of late. Then, there’s the cost of natural gas to take into account. Natural gas is expensive and will continue to be expensive.
Generally, in terms of operational costs, gas furnaces and heat pump units are neck and neck – at least in terms of what you’re going to pay for your heating bills.
Finally, there’s one other option to consider: the dual fuel unit. This is a gas furnace and heat pump all in one. So, on the days where it’s not so cold out it’ll actually run as a heat pump. Then, if we drop below a certain temperature, it will switch to gas furnace mode. and then it will switch onto the gas furnace. This is truly smart system and the ultimate system to have in my opinion. Unfortunately, very few Phoenix homeowners are aware that dual fuel systems even exist . They do tend to cost a bit more from the outset. Still, over time, they provide greater efficiency and energy savings, not to mention, better overall comfort.

"Deck the Halls" or "Deck the Hall", the original title, is a traditional Yuletide or Christmas and New Years' carol. The melody is Welsh dating back to the sixteenth century, and belongs to a winter carol, Nos Galan.
The lyrics first appeared in Welsh Melodies, a set of four volumes authored by John Thomas with Welsh words by John Jones and English words by Thomas Oliphant, although the repeated "fa la la" goes back to the original Welsh Nos Galan and may originate from medieval ballads.
The song is in AABA form. The series Welsh Melodies appears in four volumes, the first two in 1862, the third in 1870 and the final volume in 1874. As can be seen from the translation of Nos Galan below, Deck the Hall(s) is not a translation but new words to an old song.
The melody of "Deck the Hall" is taken from "Nos Galan" ("New Year's Eve"), a traditional Welsh New Year's Eve carol published in 1794, although it is much older. The Welsh and English lyrics as translated there are as follows:

That is a bit different than the song we now sing. Originally, carols were dances and not songs. The accompanying tune would have been used as a setting for any verses of appropriate metre. Singers would compete with each other, verse for verse — known as canu penillion dull y De ("singing verses in the southern style"). Tunes originally used to accompany carols became separated from the original dances, but were still referred to as "carols".
The connection with dancing is made explicit in the English lyrics by the phrase "follow me in merry measure" as "measure" is a synonym for dance. A collection of such sixteenth and seventeenth century dances danced at the Inns of Court in London are called the Old Measures. Dancing itself having been previously suppressed by the church was revived during the renaissance beginning in fifteenth century Italy.
