Yes, We Save Heating Costs, But…

During the winter we enjoy both wonderful weather, and we also get a respite from our summer cooling costs. Do you ever wonder what the trade-off is between our high cooling cost and the price of staying warm in one of our colder states?

We did some calculations with data from utility companies.  What follows is the base lines we used. We tried to stay conservative in both cases and we didn’t use a state that was known for the coldest of winters.  Yes, the Phoenix area has one of the hottest summer climates.

Square footage = 1,500 Square feet
Energy source; Phoenix AZ – Electricity • Bangor ME – Propane
Temperature set = 70 degrees
Well insulated dwelling
Does not consider the cost of domestic hot water
Cost based on total year
Maximum heat or cooling seven months and normal heating or cooling five months.

The numbers are – Phoenix $2,684 and Bangor $3,717 – I guess that means that Phoenix wins.

Did You Know?

Staying with our comparison cities

Average price of a gallon of milk – Phoenix $3.07 • Bangor $3.58*
