Petrified Forest was originally set aside due to the amazing deposit of petrified logs. There is so much more! Fossils of more than 200 different taxa of plants, animal fossils from invertebrates to giant reptiles. Petrified Forest is a living laboratory. They have scientists on staff and a working fossil preparation laboratory.
Petrified Forest is a Science Park! Best known for globally significant Late Triassic fossils, the park attracts many researchers. Geologists study the multi-hued Chinle Formation. Archaeologists' research over 13,000 years of history. Biologists explore one of the best remnants of native Arizona grassland. Air quality is an ongoing study in the park. The park, just off Interstate 40 and east of Holbrook, is a wonderland of petrified wood, badlands, fossils and grasslands. Known for its enormous tree trunks of stone, the park is a great place to learn about Arizona's geology, archaeology and paleontology.
The park is open year round except Christmas, December 25. Petrified Forest National Park is open at different hours during the year.
