Green Lawns and Shade Trees Reduce Cooling Costs

The proper use of “green” around your home helps decrease air conditioning costs.

Here are some useful references:  According to the California Energy Commission: Planting the correct trees, shrubs, vines and groundcover can make your home both warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. In fact, the right type of tree can reduce your summer cooling costs by 20 to 40 percent!

Computer models devised by the U.S. Department of Energy predict that the proper placement of only three trees will save an average household between $100 and $250 in energy costs annually.

The cooling effect of a properly watered average size lawn is equal to about 9 tons of air conditioning.

You want shade on the east, south and west side of your home to block the heat from solar gain.  Mature trees not only provide shade but actually cool the air around the tree and your home.  Planting trees in key places can affect sun absorption and other factors, because the orientation of your home can't be changed.

The same affect of cooling the air comes from your lawn,  The ground cover reduces the air temperature and reduces the amount of heat reflected against your house compared to desert landscaping, concrete or asphalt. So you have cooler air and reduced solar gain from a green lawn.  While they may a partial offset from the cost of watering and maintaining a lawn there is still a significant savings from the lawn’s effects.

Landscaping is just one of the ways to improve energy efficiency. Shades and awnings can help cut energy costs. Lighting is also important. An outside light, either on a porch or a post, is one of the five most-used lights in a home.
