Choosing The Right AC Repair Service

First and foremost in Arizona you need to know if they are a ROC licensed contractor.  Contractor licensing, quality control and oversight. The Arizona Registrar of Contractors also helps resolve issues and provide compensation to consumers.  Ask for their ROC License number.

Are they trained and experienced with the specific make and model you're having repaired or installed?

Certification simply means that they've proven that they know what they're doing. Many contractors, especially the less expensive ones, know the basic process, but they might not know the specific details associated with your make and model -- they're not certified. Working with a certified AC installer makes it a lot less likely that you'll need that bond/insurance we just discussed.

Has the air conditioning company been in business for a while? 

"A while" might seem a bit vague, but it's a mostly subjective question. There is no hard-and-fast rule that says 'every HVAC contractor that's been in business for many years is a good one' -- but by and large, poorly run AC businesses don't stay in the business for long. Look for someone who's been around for a while and you're much more likely to find excellent (and prompt) customer service.

Is the air conditioning company insured? 

Also called 'bonded', a properly insured contractor or company will be able to pay for any damage they incur to your home in the installation process if something should go wrong. Simply put, working with an uninsured air conditioning company is like playing scratch lotto, but in negative numbers -- it's likely nothing will go wrong, but if it does, you're suddenly out hundreds or thousands of dollars and there's nothing you can do about it. 

Are they accredited with the Better Business Bureau?

The statement that they are a BBB Accredited Business in good standing says, “ They are an ethical business who cares about their community." The BBB Logo or plaque prominently displayed at their place of business, on their website or in advertisements, should give a favorable first impression and a competitive advantage.

Get Your Arizona Air Conditioning Ready For Summer

Sweltering temperatures are just around the corner, and your best defense is a central air-conditioning system. If you have one at your house, there are a few things you can do to make sure that it's tuned up and ready to go when the summer sun arrives.

Check Your Ductwork

There are two areas here worth checking. The first is the registers in your house. Make sure that there are no rugs or furniture obstructing the airflow. Then open them up and see if anything has gotten into the ductwork that could cause problems. If you have toddlers around, it's anyone's guess what's in there.

If you find mold growing in your ducts, it's worthwhile to contact a duct-cleaning company. For a little cash, they can do a thorough cleaning of your entire system.

The second place to check is the ductwork that travels through your attic. All of the connections and seams should be sealed, with no holes or corrosion. To cover any holes and seal the joints, use silver aluminum-foil tape, as opposed to the traditional duct tape.

If you have an roof system, pay close attention to the insulation on the supply duct, the one that brings the cool air back to your house. With no insulation, that cold metal can start to sweat in your hot attic and the condensation will drip onto your ceilings.

Change the Filters

These are located at the blower unit and are usually placed where the return duct meets the unit. You should check your filters once a month. A badly clogged filter slows down the airflow through the blower unit, allowing the cooling coil to ice up. This could cause your unit to shut down.

There are many grades of filters available. If you use the kind that reduces allergens, know that they're going to clog up faster, so they should be checked more often.

Check Your AC Pan or Drain

When hot air passes through the cooling coil, condensation occurs. Air-conditioning systems have a variety of ways of dealing with this. Depending on where your blower unit is located, this moisture may go into a gravity-fed drain, or it may go into a pan under the blower unit. If it's in a basement, the pan may have a small pump to move the water to a drain. If the unit is in an attic, the water may just enter the pan and evaporate.

Did You Use Your AC Yesterday?

Are you one of the people who used their AC for the very first time this year.  Was Monday the day that you moved your thermostat to the “Cool” setting for this cooling season?  Did you hold your breath waiting to find out if your air conditioner was going to work?

Here Comes The Heat

Monday April 22nd and here in Phoenix Arizona we can now say “Here Comes The Heat”.  According to the Weather Channel, with the exception of one day the temperature will be 95 or 96 degrees Fahrenheit.

As is typical this time of year there is no rain or even clouds in their forecast.

I know I can’t speak for everyone but, that means that some time in the afternoon I am going to rely on my Air Conditioner to keep me comfortable.

Have you even done a test run of your AC Unit this season?  Have you changed your air filter yet?  How will you’re a/C unit work when you first need it to run?

Here in the Valley of the Sun you are going to need to cool off your house today or tomorrow.  Is it time for your yearly check-up?  It’s not too late.  

Typically in Phoenix, the on ground temperatures on asphalt or concrete will run 15 to 20 degrees higher than the air temperatures.  That means your house will warm up as the days go on.
