Valley of the Sun We Are In-between Heating and Air Conditioning

With our afternoon highs running just above eighty degrees and our morning lows in the mid to upper fifties you may think that our blog would be out of things to talk about that are either heating or air conditioning related.

Nothing could be further from the truth. This actually the perfect time of year to have either your heating or cooling system serviced or replaced.

1. HVAC contractors are not swamped right now with service requests.
2. Your attic is not yet hot enough to melt metal or have your service tech baked.
3. Many time prices on parts and equipment are at their lowest.
4. You have time to consider your options.
5. You can see if your utility company has rebates for new equipment.
6. There MAY be federal or state programs in place to help defer your costs.
7. Check new regulations that exist or are just about to be implemented to see what they affect.

By replacing your system in the spring you put time on your side.  Time to research the type of equipment that would be best for your situation instead of just replicating whatever you had before.

Spring replacements also give you time to search for the best contractor in the area to do the installation and chances are, since contractors are in between the cooling and heating seasons, they will be much more available and willing to spend time with you to help you figure out the best ways to solve your cooling problems.

Since investments in new HVAC systems can be significant, this time might also allow you to line up financing and maybe cover it under a home equity loan and save on financing costs.

If you have Aaron’s Mechanical Services check your AC system in the spring, you both might have time to have him run some new calculations on both the actual cooling requirements for your home as well as the ductwork and airflow calculations.  A lot might have changed with your home since that old HVAC system was installed and these changes can affect both the size and type of system you now need to adequately cool and heat your home.  For example, if you added insulation, or upgraded to more efficient windows, knocked out some walls or added a room, you might need a different system size.  If you get the wrong size system you could have two problems.  First, if your system is too small it won’t keep up on the hottest days.  If your system is too large it will cycle too much and will cause wide swings in your indoor temperature and if you live in an area where humidity levels can be high it will not remove all the humidity from your home and you will have problems – especially at night, when you are trying to sleep.  Also, if you have kids going away to college and you want to shut off the AC vents in their rooms while they are gone, you might be better off with a system that has at least two steps of capacity modulation or you will run into the same problems as having the wrong size system.  Closing room vents and doors effectively makes your house appear smaller to your HVAC system and in addition to comfort problems you could even do significant damage to the system or cause it to fail prematurely.

A New Week and Another Big Storm

Here it is another Monday, in the last half of February 2015.  I know it doesn’t surprise you that I say it is snowing in Wyoming. But the fourth big storm is roaring into the eastern seaboard and Boston is square in its sights… again.

Boston is having a record setting start to 2015.  The downside is that the records they are setting are no fun at all. They have record snowfall and record cold temperatures coming again. Some Seahawk fans are saying it is Payback for winning the NFL Super Bowl.

Boston MA

If you want to know why folks love to live here in the Valley of the Sun here is the exact same forecast period for the Phoenix Metro Area.

Phoenix AZ

Can we get a big high five for this weather? Do we need to thank the National Weather Service for what amounts to an early spring here in Phoenix? Boston is prepping their snow shovels and we are buying barbeque meat for the grill.

As you all know, here in the Phoenix Metro Area, we try to guess the day that we first reach the century mark.  Yep, we can start to think about when we get our first one-hundred degree Fahrenheit day.

Did You Know?

Earliest day Phoenix hit 100 degrees… April 6th 1989. Will we beat that temperature before that date this year? Remember that is the official temperature measured at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Even more amazing is the fact that our hottest overnight low was 96 degrees Fahrenheit on July 15th, 2003. There are cities here in the U.S. that never even get that hot for the afternoon high temperature on their hottest summer day.

Let’s put this rumor to rest once and for all. No, we don’t wear special metal snow shoes to keep from sinking deep into the asphalt pavement as we walk through parking lots on real hot summer afternoons.

Cool Arizona Places: Tumacacori National Historical Park

Tumacacori Always Changing - Forever the Same

More than just adobe, plaster, and wood, these ruins evoke tales of life and land transformed by cultures meeting and mixing. Father Kino’s 1691 landmark visit to an O’odham village when he established Mission Tumacácori was just one event among many. Wave after wave of change has swept or crept across this realm - this land and its people are not static. Come visit and experience this heritage.

Tumacacori National Historical Park, is located south of Tucson, and preserves the ruins of three early Spanish colonial missions on 47 acres in southern Arizona. San José de Tumacácori and Los Santos Ángeles de Guevavi were established in 1691 and are the two oldest missions in Arizona. The third mission, San Cayetano de Calabazas, was established in 1756. The site was abandoned in 1848 due to Apache raids, neglect, and a terrible winter. Tumacacori became a national monument in 1908 and the two Spanish missions, Guevavi and Calabazas, were added to the site in 1990.

Visitors to Tumacácori enter the park through the Visitor Center. Staffed by National Park Service employees and volunteers, the museum and bookstore provide orientation and a wealth of information. A fourteen-minute video is available, started at any time by the push of a button.

A self-guiding tour book for the Tumacácori Mission grounds can be purchased or borrowed in the bookstore. Guided tours led by a park ranger or volunteer are available at some times of the year.

Children of all ages enjoy participating in the park's Junior Ranger program during their visit.

Weekends in the fall and Wednesday through Sunday in the winter and spring, you may encounter a cultural demonstrator on the grounds. This is a great opportunity to sample traditional foods or learn traditional craft techniques.

Allow one to two hours for plenty of time to tour both the mission grounds and the museum. All areas are accessible by paved foot paths. A wheelchair is available for loan in the Visitor Center. There are no roads in the park.

During the winter months, special tours are offered to two other missions historically associated with Tumacácori, Los Santos Ángeles de Guevavi and San Cayetano de Calabazas. Their fragile ruins, protected by the National Park Service, are normally closed to the public and can be visited only as part of these special reserved tours.

Location: 1891 East Frontage Road, Tumacacori

Phoenix Arizona Does Too Have Four Seasons

I heard some folks talking about the climate (seasons) we have here in the Phoenix Metro area. They seemed to think we have two months of Heating Season.  That is followed by two months of No Heat needed. That is followed the six months of You Gotta Have Air Conditioning season. That is followed by the two months of No Cooling needed season.  They may just have something there.

Are you making plans to do anything different for the upcoming You Gotta Have Air Conditioning season in the summer of 2015?

Is your current air conditioner over ten years old?

How frequently does it require service?

Has your utility bill increased?

Do you think it still puts out as cold of air as it used to?

Has your warranty expired?

If you have answered yes to some of those questions above? It just may be time to think replacement rather than additional repairs.  We would be glad to speak with you about what would make the best options to consider for your home. Aaron’s Mechanical Services is just as close as your phone at 623-388-4436

Did You Know?

Phoenix is the largest hottest metro area in the United States. While there are a few cities that are hotter than the Valley of the Sun they are much smaller in both population and area.

Las Vegas tends to be a close second in heat it smaller in both area and population.

While several metro areas in Texas are near in size they are not nearly as hot as Phoenix. Huston tends to have some days that are more uncomfortable due to the humidity levels.

Yes, Phoenix does tend to have what could be called a dry heat as our humidity can run in the low single digits.

Have you heard the one about “Hell” in Arizona? “Welcome to Arizona, where summer spends the winter — and hell spends the summer.”

Why We Live in the Valley of the Sun

If you aren’t sure where the Valley of the Sun is, when we use that phrase we mean the Phoenix Metro Area. And this next ten days is a perfect example why many of us chose to live here.

Let’s compare another large metro area in the northeast to ours here in the desert southwest. We are going to compare the National Weather Service forecast for the Phoenix Metro Area and the Boston MA metroplex.

Here in Phoenix for the next seven days our afternoon highs will not drop below eighty degrees Fahrenheit.  The highest will be on Saturday February fourteenth at eighty-five degrees. Our nights will have the lowest temperature on Thursday the twelfth at fifty-one degrees. The days will be Sunny or with light clouds with zero chance or precipitation. Really beautiful weather.

Now Boston, not so much. Their forecast shows that for the next seven days their afternoon highs will not go above thirty degrees Fahrenheit. That means the whole week will never even get above freezing. Their nights will have the lowest temperature on Friday the thirteenth at minus 4 degrees. The days are forecast to be snowing, windy or just plain cloudy at the best. Real winter style weather.

They may have won the big football game but Phoenix wins with the best weather. We hope Bostonians can stay safe and warm this next week as they have some really nice people who live back there.

Before anyone else mentions it this is an above average week, temperature wise, here in the Valley of the Sun.  Our average is around eight degrees cooler. So just replace the eighties with the seventies.

For those who are looking for cooler weather here in the Phoenix metro area the seventies are coming back in just eight days or so. We will have nights and early morning temperature that require some heat and blankets to keep you warm and comfortable. So, can I ask if need to have your heating system looked at?

Aaron’s Mechanical Services has been serving the Valley of the Sun since 1994 and we look forward to helping your family stay warm.

We have valley wide service for all brands, makes and models of heating systems and HVAC units. We are as close as your phone.
