The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery . The ceremony commences precisely at 11:00 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans' organizations and remarks from dignitaries. The ceremony is intended to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces.

Veterans Day Parades
Parades honoring the nation's veterans are set for Phoenix, Tempe, and other valley cities as well as Prescott and Tucson.
The popular Phoenix parade dates back to 1996, picking up a major sponsor, Phoenix VA Health Care System, the next year. The VA sponsored the event until last year.
Arizona Public Service and Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Plant stepped up to sponsor the beloved parade, which is now presented by Honoring Arizona's Veterans. Other sponsors include General Dynamics, KTAR, 3TV, Law Tigers, Choice Hotels International and United Healthcare Military & Veterans.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to line the parade route.
The parade steps off at 11:00am from North Phoenix Baptist Church at Central Avenue and Bethany Home Road. Nearly 100 groups, including bands, floats, marching units and military vehicles, will make their way south on Central Avenue, turning east on Camelback Road and then south again on Seventh Street, ending at Seventh Street and Indian School Road at 2 p.m.
Veterans Tribute Ride
An expected 500 motorcycle enthusiasts and the community will come together at the Veterans Tribute Ride to honor all branches of our armed services and our veterans. Proceeds benefit Operation Santa Claus and other Arizona charities.

Free barbecue for veterans, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Nov. 11 at Famous Dave’s, 1011 N. Dobson Road, Mesa. All current and former military honored with a free “Two Meat Salute” meal. OK, before you think that is a crazy number for the Phoenix Metro area we are talking about the record high for November 7th and that is really very warm for this time of year. I guess we should feel lucky that our high was only eighty-five degrees today.
It is like we need to have two different outfits to wear. It was in the mid-forties when I got up this morning and the thermometer on my dashboard read eighty-nine degrees late this afternoon. That was a warming change of over forty degrees Fahrenheit in about eight or nine hours. Welcome to the Valley of the Sun, even in the fall and winter.
With the daily high running to almost ninety degrees it may seem strange to be talking about getting your furnace or HVAC system tuned-up for the winter. But, now is a great time to call Aaron’s Mechanical Service at 623-388-4436 and find a time that works best for your appointment.

You may have heard that air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces have come a long way in the last 10 years. The most energy efficient air conditioner of ten years ago is the bottom of the line now. In fact, a 1992 Federal law forced the manufacturers to stop making extremely inefficient units.
You’ll hear a lot of industry jargon while talking to contractors, like “SEER”, “HSPF” and “AFUE”. These terms basically describe how efficiently the equipment operates, like miles per gallon for a car. The higher the efficiency number, the lower your electric and gas bills are supposed to be.

Located in the Fort Apache Historic Park, Nohwike’ Bágowa (House of Our Footprints) is the place to experience Apache history and culture. Housed in a modern facility constructed to reflect a gowa, our traditional holy home, the cultural center and museum is committed to the celebration and perpetuation of the Apache heritage. Nohwike’ Bágowa hosts long term exhibits, temporary exhibitions, regularly scheduled Apache arts demonstrations, and other special events. The museum also houses the Tribe’s growing archival collection, including manuscripts, publications, and a large collection of historic photographs. The museum shop offers a wide selection of the best Apache basketry, beadwork, and other arts, in addition to books, music, and Fort Apache and Tribal mementos.
The Fort Apache Historic Park, including Kinishba Ruins, is open daily from 7:00am to sunset. Nohwike’ Bágowa is open Monday-Saturday 8am to 5pm during the summer, and Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm during the winter. Admission to the museum and park is $5.00 per adult, and $3.00 for seniors (64+) and students. Children under 7 are admitted free. Admission to the Park after-hours and on holidays is $5.00 per vehicle per day. Apache tour guides are available with advance reservation, and special accommodations and activities can be arranged for tour groups.
Opened in May 2004 with the support of a National Endowment for the Humanities Implementation Grant, this long-term exhibition explores Apache heritage from our Creation to our Lives Today. Visitors experience the multimedia Creation Story inside a traditionally constructed gowa (Apache home) in the center of the museum. Rare Apache objects — including loans from Arizona State Museum , the Heard Museum , and Sharlot Hall Museum — along with historic photographs and hands-on opportunities introduce our ancestors’ lives. Contemporary photographs, interactive computer and audio stations, and artwork provide understanding of what Apache people’s experiences are like in the twenty-first century.

If you were in the west valley Monday evening you got to enjoy a nice evening shower. The air smells so fresh after a nice shower, it is a great perk to the much needed moisture. While there was a bit of damage from the gusty winds it was a mild storm overall.
We still have those last few eighty degree plus days in the weather forecast. But you can see the trend to cooler and cooler nights. That will eventually lead to real cold Arizona nights.

Do you know that there is more than one reason that there is a change in “smell” of the air after a rain shower. Here are just two of them.
The fresh air smell is caused by the acidity of rain. Because of chemicals in the atmosphere, rainwater tends to be somewhat acidic, especially in urban environments. When it comes in contact with organic debris or chemicals on the ground, it can cause some particularly aromatic reactions. It breaks apart soil and releases minerals trapped inside, and it reacts with chemicals, such as gasoline, giving them a stronger smell. These reactions generally produce more unpleasant smells than bacteria spores, which is why the after-the-rain smell isn't always a good one. Like the smell caused by the bacteria spores, the smell of chemical reactions is most noticeable when it rains following a dry spell. This is because once the chemicals on the ground have been diluted by one downpour, they don't have the same reaction with the rainwater.
One of the more pleasant rain smells, the one we often notice in the woods, is actually caused by bacteria! Actinomycetes, a type of filamentous bacteria, grow in soil when conditions are damp and warm. When the soil dries out, the bacteria produces spores in the soil. The wetness and force of rainfall kick these tiny spores up into the air where the moisture after a rain acts as an aerosol (just like an aerosol air freshener).
The moist air easily carries the spores to us so we breathe them in. These spores have a distinctive, earthy smell we often associate with rainfall. The bacteria is extremely common and can be found in areas all over the world, which accounts for the universality of this sweet "after-the-rain" smell. Since the bacteria thrives in moist soil but releases the spores once the soil dries out, the smell is most acute after a rain that follows a dry spell, although you'll notice it to some degree after most rainstorms.

Based on the ten day forecast from the National Weather Service we see five of the next ten days in the very low eighties. So is this “The Last of the 80 Degree Days” for this year? With the daytime highs in the seventies that means our nights will dip as low as the mid- forties during the overnight swing.
In some parts of the country the daytime highs will be our lows again. For people in the Valley of the Sun a temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit feels like more than just sweater weather. You know who you are. Some folks start using their fireplaces and electric blankets when the thermometer gets near the sixty degree mark.
