Too Hot To…

Summer in Arizona.  Ok, Ok … it still is two weeks until it is officially summer, but with temperatures over 110 degrees Fahrenheit already it sure feels like summer to me.

Now that you have had several days of “Hot” how comfortable is your home?  Is your Air Conditioner running full time to keep your home or business where you are comfortable?

Many times you have rooms in your home that are Too Hot… Many times people find that when working or cooking in the kitchen during the summer it is a room that is just too hot.  You need to make sure your AC Unit is working properly and the ac vents are properly balanced.  Also try to cook or bake during cooler times of the day.  Morning or late evening can be good times to do your hotter jobs.  

Consider using a crock pot which will add far less heat to the room rather than the store or oven.  Keep you refrigerator door closed as much as possible.

Barbecuing or grilling in the outdoors adds fun to any meal and keeps your kitchen cool during hot weather. Anything you can cook in your kitchen can be adapted to be cooked on an outdoor grill.

Consider the benefits of changing your kitchen ceiling light to a ceiling fan with lighting fixture, to improve air circulation and provide a cooling breeze in your cooking area. Keep the cook cool and happy during meal preparation.

Make lots of salads, cold soups, and other fresh, raw dishes. Enjoy the local bounty from your garden or local farmer's market and save both cooking and transportation energy.

Heat or cook things in the microwave whenever possible, rather than on the stovetop or in the oven. It’s energy-efficient and heats only the food, not the air or a lot of extra water.

Cool foods or leftovers at room temperature for up to an hour before putting them in the refrigerator to reduce the amount of work your appliance has to do. Not only does cooling hot food require more energy, but your fridge also generates heat that is released into the house while doing so.

Keeping Babies Safe In Arizona Summer Heat

With the Television stations and the weather services telling us that this weekend will see temperatures in the Arizona desert going to be from 110 to 114 degrees you may wonder how you can keep your new baby safe and comfortable.

Whether you spend it inside or in the great outdoors, summer is a tricky season for keeping an infant safe and comfortable. Overdress a baby and he could develop an angry heat rash; expose his fragile body to hot conditions and he could be vulnerable to a painful, damaging sunburn or to heatstroke, a serious affliction characterized by a high fever and rapid breathing. Overheating has also been linked to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), a fatal sleeping disorder. Babies sleep deeply when they're hot, making them difficult to arouse, which may increase the risk of SIDS.

Since a baby doesn't perspire effectively, he can become overheated far more quickly than an adult. That's why you should never leave an infant in a hot room or a parked car. Even a few minutes could cause his temperature to spike and, in extreme cases, may prove life-threatening.

Make sure you can keep your home comfortable for you new baby as well as the rest of the family.  Putting you baby down for a nap is best done in a well ventilated room that is at a comfortable temperature range.

Even if you don't see beads of sweat dripping from your infant's forehead, he can be losing precious fluids to perspiration in hot weather. A flushed face, skin that's warm to the touch, rapid breathing, and restlessness may be warning signs of dehydration. Since infants under 6 months shouldn't drink water (babies over 6 months can take in modest amounts), replace the lost liquids by giving him extra formula or by nursing more frequently. Babies should drink at least 50 percent more than usual in the summer (normal fluid intake is at least two ounces per pound per day), so a ten-pound baby who usually takes in 20 ounces should be offered a minimum of 30 ounces.

If an infant sweats profusely during hot, humid weather, tiny red bumps may start to cluster on her neck or groin, in the folds of her skin at the back of her knees, or in the crease of her elbows. To relieve heat rash, remove her sticky outfit and dress her in loose cotton clothes (or simply a diaper), and apply cornstarch baby powder to the affected areas. Keeping her in a cool, well-ventilated room will help relieve symptoms.

Arizona Places: Ranch at Fossil Creek

Weather Dangers You Can Avoid

With the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma and the other states in the Midwest and the intense media coverage you are well aware of the dangers related to these storms.  We have just entered into the 2013 hurricane seasons as well.

Many folks come away from these stories thinking the high winds of the tornadoes are the only dangers that are weather related causes of death.

Did you know that heat related deaths are the most common cause of weather related deaths.  More people die each year in the United States from heat related causes than anything else.  These types deaths rarely get the coverage that floods or wind damage deaths receive. 

With the temperatures in the Phoenix area pushing 110 degrees Fahrenheit plus already you need to be aware of the local dos and don’ts and heat stress related signs.

Factors Leading to Heat Stress
High temperature; direct sun or heat; limited air movement; physical exertion; poor physical condition; some medicines; and inadequate tolerance for hot indoor spaces.

Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion
* Headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting.
* Weakness and moist skin.
* Mood changes such as irritability or confusion.
* Upset stomach or vomiting.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke
* Dry, hot skin with no sweating.
* Mental confusion or losing consciousness.
* Seizures or fits.

Preventing Heat Stress
* Know signs/symptoms of heat-related illnesses;
* Monitor yourself, friends and family.
* Block out direct sun or other heat sources.
* Use air-conditioning and rest regularly.
* Drink lots of water; about 1 cup every 15 minutes.
* Wear lightweight, light colored, loose-fitting clothes.
* Avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks, or heavy meals.

What to Do for Heat-Related Illness
* Seek Medical Attention or Call 911 at once.
